Could It Be Someone Else?

The Tennessean has finally acknowledged the Erat injury!

In their write-up today, they too anticipate a call-up to take Erat's roster spot. However, they mention a couple of different names as possibilities: Santorelli, Nick Spaling, Hugh Jessiman, and Jed Ortmeyer.

That got us thinking - is there any chance that someone other than Santorelli would be called up?

Hugh JessimanHugh Jessiman is the most intriguing possibility. His 18 goals are second on the team, and his offensive game has shown marked improvement in the last few weeks. However, Jessiman is in the same boat as Jed Ortmeyer; he would have to clear waivers before being called up.

Jessiman was drafted way back in 2003, but didn't sign his first pro contract until 2005. As a 21 year old, he became exempt from NHL waivers for three seasons. Those three seasons were up last year. If they try to call up Jessiman, any team in the NHL can claim him for half of his salary - leaving the Preds on the hook for the other half.

Nick Spaling is an interesting name to throw out there. I don't see how - given the choice between Spaling and Santorelli -  you could really go with the rookie. The Preds are in a playoff chase. Do you really think they are gonna call up a guy in his first professional season? Not when there is a more seasoned option available.

We are still waiting for a miracle on the David Legwand face-front. Our source in Nashville says there's "no chance" Legwand will return this week. We trust him - but we don't want to believe him.

Just did a quick search and came across this blog post from last year...

community.foxsports.com/.../NHL_ReEntry_Waiver_Rule_after_the_Trade_Deadline

"The process involving re-entry waivers changes after the trade deadline, as a team can claim Petersen for half price and place him on their NHL roster, but they cannot play him in the regular season or in playoff games for the remainder of the season. That allows teams to make call-ups like this without much risk of losing a player."

If this is the case, perhaps the team would make a move like Jessiman or Ortmeyer? Jessiman for his size and a tryout, or Ortmeyer for his veteran presence during a run for the playoffs... ?

That's interesting. He doesn't cite his source on that, and I've read through the CBA section on re-entry waivers a couple times this morning.

There is no mention of the re-entry process changing after the trade deadline.

I'm not saying he's wrong - he is a professional journalist after all. But that's the ONLY reference I can find to the rule changing.

So I'm going to remain skeptical.

Besides - if that were true, then they could have called up Ortmeyer instead of O'Reilly.

Poile has mentioned this waiver rule a couple of times since the deadline passed.  I believe this came into play just after the lockout with a waiver claim between Calgary and Boston forcing the player to sit out the remainder of the season.

I would love to see Spaling get a shot, but not this late in the season.  Same thing goes for Jessiman, although he has more experience.  Ortmeyer simply cannot replace a top-six forward even on a short term basis and we do not have any immediate replacements in Nashville to step in right now.  Santorelli has played his way into this call-up with 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists) this month after getting called out by both Lambert and Trotz in the paper last month.

Were is this article about Mike Santorelli being called out buy Lambert & Trotz I would love to read it. I did a search and can't find one. In my opinion Mike is the only one at this time ready for a call up. Last nights game proved he is ready for the next level. Just my opinion.....

The article was talking about Cal O'Reilly's first call-up, and the fact that Santorelli was not a consideration at that time.

And we have had both a quote from Lambert talking about Mike's style of play changing after coming back, and other sources indicate that his attitude was not the best.

To be fair - this appears to be water under the bridge. I haven't heard anything negative about Mike's play or attitude since then.
