AHL Sets Schedule Format & Division Alignment

What does it mean for us?

The Admirals will once again be in the West Division.  With Quad City(ies) moving up north, Iowa losing their affiliation and being just dumb in general, and with a new team in Austin, the West Division will have a slightly different look next season.  Here are the teams we need to beat, and the amount of times we'll get the opportunity to do so.

Milwaukee Admirals
Chicago Wolves (10 games)
Houston Aeros (8 games)
Peoria Rivermen (10 games)
Rockford IceHogs (10 games)
San Antonio Rampage (8 games)
Texas Stars (8 games)

The rest of the 80 game schedule?  That's going to be played against teams from the North Division.

Grand Rapids Griffins (6 games)
Hamilton Bulldogs (4 games)
Lake Erie Monsters (4 games)
Manitoba Moose (4 games)
Toronto Marlies (4 games)
Abbotsford Heat (4 games)

(The Abbotsford Heat is/are the new Quad City(ies) Flames.)

What?  You say there's a team from the North Division that the Admirals don't play?  You're absolutely right!  The Admirals will not be playing the Rochester Americans this year.  Nor will they be playing any team from the Eastern Conference.  In the past, they've played home-and-home games against teams from the east, but for the second straight year, the only way the Admirals will see the east is if they make it to the Calder Cup finals.

Yeah, we've only got one in the east, Syracuse, which is cool since my only eastern blogger friend is a Syracuse fan.

I suspect we're all going to be quite tired of each other this season. Though we're playing both SA and Austin 12 times each. Might as well just buy a condo in each city...

Looks like the Crunch gets to have a Texas vacation...they get all three of the teams down there.

The Salt Lick BBQ....SXSW.... Astros games....The Alamo.... This could work out okay for them.  Sure beats Syracuse in the winter....

How about those wonderful Iowa Chops.  They had to go  and get suspended for the very season that the AHL would have finally had 30 teams to match the NHL.  It would have been nice to finally have a 5 team division to make those games a little more meaningful.

Once again my wish (and I'm sure that of other Admirals and AHL fans) did not happen:  Home-and-Home series versus three or four Eastern Conference teams.  I like the Admirals playing agains teams in their division 8-10 times a season but I would like it if they would for once play against Springfield, Lowell, or Portland.  Even to see them play against Albany or Manchester again would be nice.

I hear ya.  Much like interleague play can be a treat in baseball, it'd be a treat to see those east coast teams.  But travel costs a lot.  Less expensive to bus to Peoria 5 times than it is to take a tour of New England.

It's interesting because a lot of the east coast teams make a trip to Canada to play the North Division teams...and then there are teams like the Ads and IceHogs that stay 100% in conference.

And the Chops....doomed from the start.
