  • O'Reilly Clears; Franson Sent Down; Other Moves

So - finally - we have official word that Cal O'Reilly has cleared waivers. As first reported on the Short Shifts twitter page, Cal was practicing with the Ads today, which was an odd sight. His waivers didn't expire until 11 am...and he took the ice well before then.

More on O'Reilly in a moment.

First - we'll tell you that Cody Franson has been sent down to Milwaukee. This is not a surprise, but it does leave the Preds with just 6 defensemen. It also gives Milwaukee one HELL of a defense. Sulzer-Franson-Blum-Matheson-Dietrich-Yonkman-Ford? Probably the best in the AHL.  And it also means Russ Sinkewich, Jason Jozsa, and Reid Cashman will all be heading to Cincy.

The Preds also - according to the release on their website - placed Colin Wilson on Injured Reserve. ...which is different than Injured Non-Roster. I'm not even going to try and understand what that difference is. The Collective Bargaining Agreement and I are still not speaking to each other. (I won't apologize for the Injured Non-Roster situation until IT apologizes for the Cal O'Reilly waiver situation).

Now - back to O'Reilly. The fact that he had to clear waivers in order to be assigned to Milwaukee will have a major impact on his immediate future. Any player that passes through waivers to be sent to the minors has to pass through Re-Entry Waivers to be called back up. When he is placed on Re-Entry Waivers, any NHL team can claim him and only pay half his salary...sticking the Preds with the bill for the other half.

I would be surprised to see Cal make it through re-entry waivers; which means he could be in Milwaukee for the long-haul. (There are exceptions to that rule for emergency/injury purposes).

Then again - I am surprised by just about everything these days.

Update:  Admirals made some other moves as well.  Barret Ehgoetz, Matt Pierce and Brock Sheahan have been released, and forward Bryan Leitch has been re-assigned to the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL.

  • What's Next For The Ads?

Now that the Preds have sent the Admirals a full compliment of players, we can take a look at what's on the immediate horizon for Milwaukee. There are currently 16 forwards in camp (Cal O'Reilly would make 17 if he passes through waivers).

The Ads will need at least 12 forwards if Coach Lane Lambert wants to roll four lines. We figure these guys are locks for roster spots:

    Triston Grant Ian McKenzie
    Hugh Jessiman Peter Olvecky
    Ryan Maki Nick Spaling
    Andreas Thuresson Ben Eaves

That leaves FOUR open slots. Mark Santorelli, Mark Van Guilder, Mike McLean, and Bryan Leitch are already under two-way, AHL/ECHL deals. However, Wacey Rabbit and Chris Mueller have been more impressive in camp. So who gets the edge? That's gonna be one of the biggest decisions facing Lane Lambert this week.

The defense is pretty much set. There are 10 blueliners left in camp, but the starters are:

    Jon Blum Mark Matheson
    Robert Dietrich Alexander Sulzer
    Scott Ford Nolan Yonkman

Those are your six. The 7th defenseman will be Russ Sinkewich...or Jason Jozsa...or Reid Cashman. (All on AHL/ECHL deals).

The Goalie battle is well known. Chet Pickard or Jeremy Smith will be sent packing to Cincy.

To start the season, this is going to be a very different Admirals team that we were expecting.

  • Preds Make Final (?) Cuts

The Predators have made a few more roster moves today...with a HUGE surprise.

According to a few sources, the Predators have assigned Triston Grant, Peter Olvecky, and Nolan Yonkman to Milwaukee. All three were placed on waivers yesterday, and cleared today.

The Preds also placed Cal O'Reilly on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to the Ads. We'll know tomorrow at noon if he clears waivers.

Finally - here's the shocker: Alexander Sulzer has been re-assigned to Milwaukee.

That means both Cody Franson and Teemu Laakso will be staying with Nashville - at least for now.

I cannot understand this move from a fiscal standpoint. The Preds have always shown to be a cost-conscious franchise and this is certainly not a cost-friendly move. Since Sulzer is on a one-way contract, he will be making his NHL salary even while playing in Milwaukee.

In further roster-management news, the Preds will be placing Joel Ward on IR and designating Colin Wilson as a non-roster player. John Glennon says "Wilson can be designated a non-roster player because he’s new to the league. He’ll be allowed to stay in Nashville and rehab the injury, but will make a minor-league salary."

I'll be honest - that pisses me off.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement says this about Non-Roster Players:

    16.12 Non-Roster Player

        (a)  Upon Approval of the Commissioner, a Player who is unavailable to play due to reasons other than injury, illness, or disability, will be designated a Non-Roster Player

There is no provision for "New Players". How in the hell can they keep Wilson up there? I guess all our discussions about whether Wilson will be in Nashville or Milwaukee are moot. He's in purgatory.

Regardless of my attitudes on this matter - the Predators are at a 22 man active roster. Or will be, once Cal O'Reilly goes somewhere.

Speaking of which - I'm also mad that O'Reilly has to go through waivers. According to the CBA, a 19 year old draftee has four years of waiver exemptions that begin when his first Standard Professional Contract is signed. Cal was born in 1986, drafted in 2005, signed in 2006, and should be exempt through 2010. The CBA pisses me off.

UPDATE 8:05 pm:  John Glennon posted a comment that says "According to the Preds, O'Reilly signed in 2006 as a 20 year-old, and therefore only had a three-year exemption from waivers."

However, according to Article 13.4 of the CBA, age is based on when the player is drafted, not when they sign: "For purposes of this Article; "age 19" means a Player reaching his nineteenth birthday in the calendar year of the Entry Draft;"

The lesson here is that I obviously can't understand the Collective Bargaining Agreement worth a darn. (That's not going to stop me from trying, though)

Other than that - our forward projections weren't too bad. Basically, Cal O'Reilly didn't make it and Mike Santorelli did. And someone will have to come down once Joel Ward and Colin Wilson are healthy.

  • We Go To Lunch - Spaling Gets Reassigned

It never fails. We've been waiting all morning for word on any cuts from Nashville. As soon as we leave for lunch - Nick Spaling gets cut from camp.

Spaling was the only player sent down, which is a little odd. The Preds have to cut 6 more players - or put someone in IR - by this weekend.

Nolan Yonkman was also placed on waivers. Should he clear (which is expected), he will join the Admirals as well. (Thanks to Ads Fan for the tip).

The Preds have to cut 5 more players - or put someone on IR - by this weekend.

    That is all.

    Thank you.

  • Eric Kent On Your Radio Tonight!

Maybe you heard Matt Moore read a few announcements for the Admirals Center Ice Radio show at the game on Friday night.  In addition to the excellence of Aaron Sims and Wojo, they promised "great guests from around the league."

One of the "great guests" will be Eric Kent.

Admirals Center Ice Radio Show is tonight from 6-8pm on Sportsradio 1250, WSSP.

Here are some more links for your reading pleasure this morning:

    -  Todd at milwaukeehockey.com has some preseason thoughts and some great photos.

    - An article about Patric Hornqvist from the Nashville City Paper (hat-tip to ontheforecheck)

    - There was some talk about Nashville changing their goal horns/songs for this year.  They substituted a Pennywise song for the Tim McGraw standard that they had been using for awhile.  Seems that was just a one-game-only deal, probably just as a litmus test to see how everyone responded to change.  NHL Fanhouse ranks the top 5 goal-horns in the league.  Nashville didn't make the list, but is honorably mentioned in the comments section.

What has been your favorite Admirals goal song?  Previous songs over the last ten years: (and feel free to point out if I missed one or two)

    - The most recent one...don't know the name....but you know how it goes
    - Rock N Roll Part 2 - Gary Glitter (that's the HEY song)
    - Ride The Train - Quad City DJ's
    - Divine Thing - Soup Dragons
