  • Pickard Paces Admirals To First Winning Streak

(Eric Kent contributed to this post -- All photos courtesy of Chris Jerina)

This Chet Pickard guy might be alright after all.  Look at the picture -- he doesn't even need his goalie stick!

Pickard rebounded from his awful debut with a solid second start of his pro career, and collected his first professional win -- a 2-1 victory over the Rockford Ice Hogs on Halloween night.

"I thought we battled hard and blocked a lot of shots again. It was a good game for us to kind of learn when things aren't flowing your way and you're under seige a little bit, how hard it is to have to battle through it and win the game."

The Admirals had a spell of penalty trouble in the first period, as Mark Matheson, Jason Josza and Triston Grant were all whistled for minor infractions.  But Chet Pickard and the Milwaukee PK unit were up to the task, and killed off all three chances.  Despite spending 6 minutes of the period killing penalties, shots were even at eight after twenty minutes.  Pickard's rebound control was outstanding in the opening period.

On one of those penalties, there wasn't a clear from the offensive zone the entire two-minutes, so hats off to the very tired PK unit of Spaling-Guite-Ford-Yonkman.  Or as the unit is now going to be known as, Spalguiforman.  (okay, maybe not).  As the penalty expired, Pickard made a nice save and covered up for the whistle, and the guys got a well deserved breather.

"They did a good job when they were tired of staying tight and they ended up blocking three or four shots. We really hit it hard with the instruction in the last week to try and shore (the penalty kill) up a litle bit. We've gotten really big efforts from certain guys on our penalty kill recently. I'm much happier with the way the penalty kill is going."

The ref put his whistle away for the second period, and it was the Admirals who broke through on the scoreboard first.  Mark Matheson dumped the puck in the offensive zone off the far boards.  Corey Crawford started to head behind the back of the net to prepare to play the puck, but the puck never made it to him.  It hit some kind of seem on the glass about half way between the blue line and the goal line, and like a perfect pool shot, the puck banked into the net.  8-ball, center pocket.  Mark Matheson got credit for it at 1:11 of the second period.

This was only the 2nd time all season that the Admirals scored the first goal.

Corey Crawford kept the Ice Hogs in the game with some pretty spectacular saves.  He's not looking like the goaltender the Admirals beat in the playoffs last year.

The Ice Hogs evened the score on a fluky goal of their own.  Skating into defensive position, Nolan Yonkman lost his edge and collided with Chet Pickard.  Bracken Kearns was stationed behind the net, and fed Matt Keith by the far face-off dot.  Keith's shot beat Pickard high glove side. Make no mistake - it was a well-placed shot. But we believe Chet would have stopped it - had he not been scrambling to get back in position.

Jasson Cullimore was whistled for tripping at the 4:29 mark of the 3rd period, leading to the Admirals only chance on the power-play.  They made good on it, as Cal O'Reilly shot the puck (!) through traffic from the far faceoff circle, beating Corey Crawford.  Hugh Jessiman didn't get an assist on the play, but his screen helped Cal's shot get through.  Blum and Dietrich with the assists.

"Finally...O'Reilly shoots. And he scores," noted Lambert, mostly in context.

The ice seemed tilted in Rockford's favor for most of the remaining time, yet they only managed 6 shots on Pickard in the 3rd period.

"He played with confidence, and he moved the puck very well," said Lambert. "He just seemed like he was more in control and he was pretty square to the puck most of the night - and that limited his rebounds. I felt the guys really battled hard and really wanted to do it for him and have him rebound from his first game."

     ODDS AND ENDS

Grant - Van Guilder - Maki
    Jones - O'Reilly - Pudding
    Spaling - Guite - Jessiman
    Mueller - Rabbit - McKenzie

    - The most exciting 30 seconds of the game came towards the end of the second period.  Corey Crawford made an amazing play to rob Ryan Jones after a beautifully set up one-timer from Santorelli.  The Ice Hogs then turned it back into a rush of their own with Jake Dowell breaking in alone on Pickard, who made an equally amazing save with the left pad.  As the Admirals were clearing the zone after the rush, Scott Ford's fists had some things to say to Jake Dowell.

The linesmen look like they're playing peek-a-boo with each other.  Regardless, Dowell got a pretty severe beatdown from Scott Ford.

    - Chris Mueller was called up today and did an admirable job in his Admirals debut.

    -  Ben Eaves was a scratch with what Coach Lambert has termed a lower-body injury.  Status for Wednesday is undetermined.

    - Ryan Jones took a slapshot to the left leg area (aka lower body, if you want to be specific) while the Ads were on their power play.  He skated gingerly to the bench, but did not miss his next shift.  We'll see if there are any lingering effects as the week progresses.

    - Ice Hogs forward and Madison, WI boy Jack Skille did not play, but he did suit up.

    That's a Teletubby signing autographs.

And - Oh, by the way - after the Predators game, Nashville sent both Peter Olvecky and Andreas Thuresson back to Milwaukee.

We'll have more about tonight's game tomorrow, including more on roster management, Chris Mueller's Admiral debut and Nick Spaling's absense from the stat sheet.

  • More From Friday

A few more thoughts from Friday's game against Rockford.

The Admirals are fortunate to have a lot of gifted photographers attend their games. We usually feature the work of Chris Jerina. Today, we have some great pictures from Paul Oetlinger. Paul's work is usually featured on milwaukeehockey.com. (Todd does some good photographic work as well).

    **************

Lambert's general thoughts on the game:

"Once again we get scored on first," said Lane Lambert. "We managed to come back and scratch back. I thought our Power Play was pretty good tonight, I thought our penalty killing was pretty good tonight, too. It's steadily getting better."

Lambert on the lone Rockford goal - scored by Scott Ford:

"Those things happen. That's just kind of the breaks of the game. It went off Ford, but these things are going to happen when you're coming to the net. That's why you throw pucks to the net."

Lambert on needing a win Saturday in order to validate the win Friday:

"We're not thinking about going and dropping one tomorrow. We just take each game individually. This is a big win for us, it's a big four point game and we'll deal with Saturday."

    **************

Nashville decided on Peter Olvecky for their most recent callup. Olvecky has certainly earned the chance, and it had to be a tuff choice between him and Andreas Thuresson. Even though he didn't get called this time, #12's opportunity can't be far off.

"I try not to think too much about it," said Thuresson. "We have a great team and Nashville is calling a lot of people up. It's good for everyone and hopefully I get a chance. If I don't get a chance, I just give the best of luck to everybody that gets called up."

"Thuresson's having a great season right now," said Coach Lambert. "The thing he's doing so well is that he's playing with an edge. he's making contact and he's playing big. He's physical and he's finding his offensive game a little bit too. I think he's been one of our most consistent players the entire season."

"I've been working on it since my first year I came here," added Thuresson. "They told me to start playing more physical. It took a while to get used to the game over here, it's a little bit quicker and everyone's hitting all the time. Now I'm trying to keep playing that game and playing physical. That creates space for players like Cal and Olvecky to make the plays."

UPDATE: Andreas Thuresson was recalled to Nashville this morning. Since that puts Milwaukee down two players, I expect a callup from Cincinnati to cross the wire this morning. Chris Mueller was the most impressive player in training camp - it wouldn't surprise me to see him in uniform tonight.

    **************

Andreas ThuressonThuresson's game winner was into a wide open net off a great feed from Robert Dietrich, who had taken the puck behind the net after a failed clearing attempt by Corey Crawford. Crawford had banged the puck off the boards...but it didn't carom like he had planned. We've been hearing about the new boards at the Bradley Center - so I asked Coach Lambert if this "fluky bounce" was our first look at the effects of those boards.

"I think he just misfired on it, actually. I thought the ice was really suspect tonight. There were pucks bouncing all over the place and it just so happens that it bounced on them this particular time instead of us. We'll take it."

    **************

Santorelli's goal came from the point on the power play. For Coach Lambert, it was the payoff for a lot of work.

"The mandate we had in practice yesterday was to get pucks on the net. We shot the puck from everywhere. Sometimes they weren't necessarily dangerous shots, but they were going toward the net. We had traffic in front for the most part. I don't even know on Santorelli's goal how much traffic we had on that particular one. There was enough to impede (Crawford), I guess."

    **************

Teemu Laakso is out for Saturday's game. Coach Lambert says he is probably 3-5 day away from returning. Lambert expects Laakso to suit up Wednesday against Chicago or Friday against Peoria.

    **************

Chet Pickard will get his second professional start tonight in net against Rockford.

Finally, here are some other pics from Paul. Enjoy!

  • Ads Get "Huge" Win Over Rockford

The Milwaukee Admirals have made a habit this season of outplaying their opposition, but coming up short on the scoreboard. Friday night against Rockford, Milwaukee finally got it all together and posted a 2-1 win that wasn't quite as close as the score would indicate.

AHL game report is here, and Dave Boehler's JSOnline recap is here.

The Admirals dominated play with their defense over the first ten minutes. Rockford didn't register their first even-strength shot on goal until 11 minutes into the game. Unfortunately, it went in.

Rob Klinkhammer collected the puck at center ice, juked around Scott Ford at the blueline, and streaked toward Mark Dekanich. Robert Dietrich cut down his angle and forced Klinkhammer to his left. With no angle to shoot - the Ice Hogs' forward centered the puck to the front of the crease. Scott Ford was there....and deflected the puck into his own net.

Milwaukee's best chance in the period came off the stick of Nick Spaling.  He fired a shot from the right circle that beat Corey Crawford...but clanged off the far post and slid harmlessly into the crease, where Crawford sat on it.

The Admirals continued to take the play to the Ice Hogs in the second period, and the scoreboard finally took a hint.  Mark Santorelli tied the game with a power play goal. It was Pudding's second goal of the year, and first since opening night.

Robert Dietrich and Ben Eaves got the assists on the play - and Jon Blum made a terrific play to help make it possible. Rockford was trying to clear the zone, and Blum got just enough of his stick on it to prevent the puck from leaving the neutral zone. That, in turn, kept Rockford's penalty killers on the ice.

The Game-Winner was scored by Andreas Thuresson into a wide open net. Corey Crawford was playing the puck behind the net and passed it off the boards. But he misfired and the puck went about 2 feet....right to Robert Dietrich. Dietrich centered to a cutting Thuresson for the easy goal.

"We've had a couple of bad bounces lately, so now - we've got some good bounces," said Thuresson.

"It was a huge game for us and a huge win for us, it gets us back to five hundred. I don't think whatever happens tomorrow is going to diminish the win tonight."

    NOTES

Robert Dietrich got to play the role of "heavy" in the first. When Danny Bois leveled Cal O'Reilly with a solid check at the blue line, Dietrich stepped up and knocked Bois on his can. The problem was Bois' hit on Cal was legal...Dietrich's hit on Bois was not.  (The puck was long gone). Dietrich was kind of hosed out of a star of the game tonight. He assisted on both goals and got his licks in on Bois (even though it was a penalty).

    *****************

Here's a riddle: Mark Matheson, Ben Guite, and Hugh Jessiman are in on a three-on-two. Who takes the shot?

    Matheson.

    From 50 feet out

    ****************

The game ended with a bit of a kerfuffle as Wacey Rabbit took out both Triston Grant and Grant Bickell with a solid check. Bickell then decided to punch Grant while Triston was lying on the ice. Triston fought back some - and wanted to keep going, but Bickell wouldn't go and the stripes broke it up. Grant was chirping at Bickell all the way to the penalty box, and even made the "chicken" motion toward him.

"We play these teams ten times each, so you're bound to have - what did you call them? Kerfluffles? - as we go along. Whatever happens tomorrow night happens. I'm sure Triston Grant's ready and prepared for whatever is going to happen."

    Peter Olvecky****************

No Admirals player has been recalled to Nashville yet...as of 10:20pm. "They're still deciding" says one source. We are told it is between Thuresson and Olvecky. (I expect Thuresson. Sutty says Olvecky. Ryan Miller thinks Bracken Kearns. We should be covered there).

    UPDATE 11:55pm:

Admirals Short Shifts has learned that Peter Olvecky will become the seventh Admirals player recalled by the Nashville Predators.

Olvecky has 2 goals and 5 assists in 9 games for the Admirals this season. Most impressively, perhaps, he is a team high +4.

When I spoke with Predators Coach Barry Trotz last week, he said Olvecky's upside caught his eye. When he is clicking, Olvecky has shown the ability to dominate at the AHL level. He possesses the speed, toughness, and scoring ability to stack up against anyone; lack of consistency has been the knock on Olvecky this season.

Olvecky does have experience at the NHL level. He played 31 games for the Minnesota Wild last season, notching 2 goals and 5 assists.

That experience may have been a factor in selecting Olvecky over Thuresson - who has played extremely well this season, too.

  • Cal Comes Back

Cal O'Reilly has been re-assigned to the Milwaukee Admirals.

O'Reilly did not need to clear waivers to come back down because he has not been on an NHL roster for 30 days since he last cleared - nor did he play in 10 games.

It is not known yet if O'Reilly will be in Milwaukee in time for tonight's game against Rockford.  UPDATE: Cal O'Reilly is expected to join the Admirals on the ice tonight against the Ice Hogs. I wonder if we'll get the Oh, **** line back!!!!

According to the Tennessean, the Preds will recall a winger before Saturday's game against Dallas. John Glennon lists Andreas Thuresson, Triston Grant, and Peter Olvecky as candidates.

  • Between The Pipes

    Mark Dekanich

    (Photos by Chris Jerina)

In general terms, it's not usually a good thing to be "battling". When a coach says that a player is "out there battling", it's kind of a back-handed compliment/morale booster. What it really means is that the player's trying. He's got a lot of try in him; but the results aren't there. And if the results aren't there - you'll only be allowed to battle for so long.

Maybe the player's sick or has a nagging injury. Maybe it's something mental. Whatever it is - it's an untenable position.

So when Lane Lambert last night said Mark Dekanich was "battling", I took it as a yellow flag.

Unless this is your first visit to our blog (and if it is - WELCOME!), you know full well that we think Dex is out of sorts. I have been particularly vocal (in a written-word sort of way) that the Admirals' #1 goalie just doesn't look comfortable between the pipes.

I'm not really sure why, either. I think Dekanich is a terrific talent and if I had to guess, I think his season numbers will look pretty darn good come April. But what about now? Is Dex' performance that far removed from last year's? Let's take a look at the numbers.

Games MINS SHOTS SAVES GA GAA SV%
    2008-2009 30 1663 753 695 58 2.09 0.923
    per game avg 55.43 25.10 23.17
    2009-2010 7 423 178 159 19 2.70 0.893
    Per game avg 60.43 25.43 22.71

Jumping DexDex' workload is remarkably similar to last year's - facing just over 25 shots per game. His save percentage is way down, however, and a GAA of 2.70 wouldn't even place him in the Top 25 last season.

And it's not just the numbers. His positioning seems off, and his rebound control seems off. (Case in point to the left - Jumping is generally considered poor form)

Unfortunately, Coach Lambert doesn't have the luxury of giving Dex a week off to re-focus. Chet Pickard has an inauspicious pro debut in Abbotsford - surrendering 7 goals on 31 shots.

I asked Coach Lambert what the plan was for the goaltending this weekend and he replied:

"I have no plan right now....(thoughtful pause)....for the goaltending. We'll look at that."

Another item to file under "not good".

Complicating matters somewhat is Jeremy Smith. The odd-man-out in the Admirals' goaltending triumvirate is 3-0 with the Cincinnati Cyclones with a 1.00 GAA and .952 Save Percentage. Of course, that's a small sample size and he did play two of the weaker teams (Johnstown and Wheeling), but those numbers jump out compared to Dex' and Pick's.

All this brings me to my theory of the day. Coach Lambert doesn't have a lpan for this weekend - but I would think Pick gets back on the ice. It makes more sense to me for that start to be at home, meaning a Friday start.

Whether Pick starts Friday or Saturday, he needs to have a good game. If he struggles again, I'm going to be watching the transaction log very closely - expecting to see the Smith-for-Pickard switch.

Now - before everyone starts chiming in that it's too early for all of this and telling me to "chillax" as my lovely wife is now annoyingly fond of saying: I Know. The team is 3-4-0-1. Last year through eight games, the team was .....

    ....wait for it.....

    3-4-0-1.

So yes - there's plenty of time right the ship. That does not mean we shouldn't be concerned.
