Shootout Stats

If you are anything like me, you are still feeling a little sick this morning after watching that shootout last night at the Bradley Center.  Mark Dekanich became the third Admirals goaltender to allow goals to all of his shootout opponents since the 05-06 season, but became the first to allow four straight goals to lose the shootout.  Pekka Rinne allowed three straight against the Grand Rapids Griffins on March 28th, 2007.  Drew MacIntyre allowed three straight on the same day two years later against the Iowa Chops.  No shooters had scored for Pekka, and only Nick Spaling scored to support Drew.

And then came last night.  With two goals of support from the Admirals skaters, Mark Dekanich was scored on in all four rounds of the shootout.  And you gotta feel bad for the guy, who had to come out right after the game, and smile for pictures.  Tough night for Mark.

Now, how have the Admirals been in the shootout historically?  The gamesheets at the AHL's website only go back to 2005-06, so there's one year of shootout data that is missing...but here are some stats to chew on.

2005-2006 2006-2007 2007-2008
Record Save % Record Save % Record Save %
Pekka Rinne 5 wins, 2 losses 0.75 Pekka Rinne 4 wins, 6 losses 0.673 Pekka Rinne 3 wins, 3 losses 0.609
Brian Finley 1 win, 2 losses 0.692 Karl Goehring 2 wins, 4 losses 0.692 Dov Gromet-Morris 2 wins, 0 losses 0.75
Scott Reid 1 win, 0 losses 0.8
2008-2009 2009-2010
Record Save % Record Save %
Drew MacIntyre 4 wins, 4 losses 0.676 Mark Dekanich 0 wins, 2 losses 0.333
Mark Dekanich 0 wins, 2 losses 0.684

So that's a team record of 22-25 since 2005.  Pekka was a wall in that first season, and had he accumulated, say, 3 wins instead of 5, those two points would have been enough to take the Admirals out of first place in the division, and it would have been a different path to the Calder Cup Finals.

Mark Dekanich is 0-4 in shootouts, but it probably feels like 0-7 to him, as one of his losses was the monster 15 round shootout against Quad City(ies) last year.

Here are the Home/Away splits

Season Home Away
2005-2006 2 wins, 1 loss 5 wins, 3 losses
2006-2007 3 wins, 4 losses 3 wins, 6 losses
2007-2008 3 wins, 1 loss 2 wins, 2 losses
2008-2009 2 wins, 4 losses 2 wins, 2 losses
2009-2010 0 win, 1 loss 0 wins, 1 loss
TOTALS 10 wins, 11 losses 12 wins, 14 losses

Tough to nail down any kind of trend over the years....except that Pekka Rinne has played in just under half of all the shootouts since 2005 (23 of 47 games, and a 12-11 record).  As far as drawing any conclusions from the above data......the Admirals have historically been extraordinarily average in the shootout.  That's about it, really.

You are absolutely correct, Ryan!  The Admirals going back even further in their history are not stellar in the shootout category.  Even in the IHL, the Ads were average, as I recall.  I wonder whether there is a team out there that has a better than average shootout history;)

Ryan, I used to play goal for the admirals...My buddy Mitch Korn spends quite a bit of time working with the Ads goalies.

How would get a copy of the videos shown on the scoreboard?

I was the goalie you see racing down the ice and jumping into a big pile up.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
