The Sunday Harvest - 7/20/08 thru 7/26/08

Player of the Week:  OF Caleb Gindl

Last 10 Games:  .500 AB, 4 2B, 1 3B, 8 RBI, 2 SB

Prior to the MLB All-Star Break, Caleb had been struggling down in West Virginia.  The Brewers organization was worried about the lack of power he was showing, along with the plunging batting average.  That changed this past week.  Celeb has been spraying the ball to all fields, finding the holes in the defenses and upping his average quite a bit -- it is now .292.  WV has had Caleb play a good amount of center field lately, which should increase his value down the stretch.  He certainly has the range to play center, and it would neutralize his below-average power for a corner infielder.  At only 19-years old, however, he has plenty of time to develop his power.

Honorable Mention

SS Michael Marseco - (Last 10: .459 BA, 3 2B, 3 3B, 11 RBI) - The under-sized shortstop has put together a good week in Helena.  Michael is showing gap power, which could become home run power in a couple of years.  The defense has been average, and his plate discipline could use some work.  It would be nice to see Michael take a few more walks than the six walks he's drawn in 35 games.  Helena has consistently placed him down in the batting order, so his average could potentially improve with a little more protection higher in the order.  Either way, nice week for Michael.

CF Lee Haydel - (Last 10: .439 BA, 2 2B, 2 3B, 8 RBI, 2 SB) - West Virginia has been the hottest team in Milwaukee's farm system, and one of the stories that has been overlooked, due to players like Eric Fryer and Steffan Wilson, is the emergence of Lee Haydel.  He stole his thirtieth base last night, which makes him one of the elite base stealers in the system.  The Brewers want Lee to get the ball on the ground a bit more and use his speed to beat out ground balls.  The transformation with the bat is exciting, yet the plate discipline needs to improve.  His strikeout-to-walk ratio is 82:28.  That is not good for a potential lead-off hitter.  The good news is that the 21-year old has a few years to learn before potentially breaking into the big leagues.

2B Eric Farris - (Last 10: .404 BA, 5 2B, 12 RBI, 6 SB) - Eric continues to make my prediction that he would be the Breakout Player of the second half look pretty darn good.  His batting average has jumped consistently throughout the last month.  He has also continued to be a menace on the basepaths, with 22 stolen bases in only 68 games.  The defense is good and projects to be above-average.  Eric doesn't have much power, but his gap power is developing nicely.  His power will need to improve a bit before he's considered a top-flight prospect, however.

Pitcher of the Week:   RHP Roque Mercedes

Roque is making himself quite comfortable in the Sunday Harvest lately.  After struggling immensely in the beginning of 2008 and being demoted to the bullpen, the young right-hander is throwing the ball fantastically.  In his last three outings, Roque has not given up a run.  In these 16.0 innings of work, he has allowed only 7 hits, 2 walks, and has struck out 20 opposing batters.  The young Dominican can hopefully keep this up for the rest of the 2008 season, so he can earn a promotion to Brevard County early next season.

Honorable Mention

RHP John Axford - Since coming off the DL in late June, John has thrown the ball pretty well in Brevard County.  He had a small blip on the screen with an outing where he went 0.2 innings and gave up 5 runs.  Since then, however, the right-hander has thrown 15.0 innings of one-run ball.  At 25-years of age, he is quite old for high class-A, so he will need to step up his game a bit in Huntsville next season.  His GO/AO ratio is underwhelming at 1.12, so the fact that he's only given up 2 home runs is very impressive.

LHP Chris Cody - Chris Cody strikes again.  You all are quite familiar with the left-handed change-up specialist, and he went 6.1 innings and only gave up one run again this week.  His 7 strikeouts as a lefty is intriguing, but he is still old for Brevard County.  The real test will be in Huntsville.  He will need to decrease his home run rate, as he has already given up 6 this year.  That may not be much, but a soft-tossing lefty has the potential to give up many homers as he moves up the system.  Next season will be the benchmark for Cody's prospect-dom.

RHP Reed Dickert - This edition of The Sunday Harvest is going to include a middle-reliever.  Sometimes the bullpen can get ignored in the minors, but Reed has only give up runs in one of his last 10 outings.  On July 13th, Reed gave up 3 runs in 3.1 innings of work.  He has been spotless besides that in his last ten appearances.  Reed did start the year in Brevard County, however, so the 24-year old has not proven himself in the higher echelons of the minor league system.  After being demoted, however, Reed has dominated.  Hopefully, he can keep this up in Brevard either next year or at the end of this season.
