Who Should Pitch on Thursday?

With CC taking the mound tonight after yet another short week of rest, Thursday's starter has yet to be released to the public by interim manager Dale Sveum.  Why?  Because he really has no idea what to do.

Ben Sheets is questionable with his elbow tenderness and won't be available until the weekend.  Yovani Gallardo has improved his arm strength in Phoenix and can go a couple of innings, but he's yet to swing the bat, and hasn't done a whole lot of covering first base in his simulated games.  Manny Parra has hit a wall after going far over his innings limit.  Jeff Suppan is either over the hill or still struggling with an elbow injury that forced him to miss a start earlier this year.  Geez... what to do?

There's obviously a few right off the bat no-no's in my book.  Sheets should not pitch the rest of the regular season, unless somehow a one-game playoff were to rear it's ugly head.  I know it's his last year, but there's no way i try and ruin a guy's career for one game that may or may not give you a playoff run.  Manny Parra is out too.  If Manny is used at all the rest of the way, it should be as a one or two inning relief guy or a pinch hitter in a game that may go too long.  So that leaves Suppan and Gallardo.

Gallardo makes me nervous.  He's going to be the cornerstone of this franchise for the next four or five years, and should be perfectly complemented by Manny Parra during that era.  With that being said, this isn't football, and the risk of an additional tear is slim from what I understand.  Would I put Yo-Go out on the mound?  Yes, but there would be some guidelines.

1.  Swing 80% at the plate if swinging is necessary at all.  If there's two outs and no one on, I don't even want you to swing.

2.  If you do happen to hit the ball, DO NOT run the bases with any effort.  If the run is important, I'll pinch run you and let Mark DiFelice do his thing if its early.

3.  Lastly, if you feel any discomfort, and I mean if it itches, tell me, because I'm pulling you.

Gallardo isn't my number one choice though.  It's too risky.  And Jeff Suppan isn't my choice either, considering his 5.82 ERA in 17 innings against Pittsburgh this season.  My choice is the man mentioned in Yo's guidelines.

The Pirates haven't seen Mark DiFelice all season.  He pounds the strike zone and avoids the long ball, which means he has the ability to get through four or five innings without a lot of pitches despite his limited arm strength.  If something happens, you can bring in Suppan to cover the bullpen's behind, but DiFelice really understands the dire situation.  Since coming up, Mark has pitched 4.2 scoreless innings including two important innings in the only victory against the Chicago Cubs.  Look, if he can shut out the Cubs over two innings, he should be more than capable of slowing down the Pirates.  All I ask is he gets us through four.  Gallardo and Suppan should be able to pick up the slack.

What do you think Brewers fans?

I was all ready to do the Round 'em Up for today, but I think this post should get more face-time...so I'm just going to let this post ride.

It is fairly well-documented that I like Mark DiFelice, so the fact that Aaron is recommending him for a stretch run is awesome.  He has proven that he at least deserves a shot.

Mark is a bit susceptible to the long ball.  He's given up four long balls in under 20 innings of work, but his WHIP is a stellar 1.091.  His BB/K ratio is 4/20.

Give the guy the ball and watch what he does with it.

I don't like the idea of starting Yo at all. Even playing him at all is a little scary. We've already almost puked up a piece of the future this September, let's not ruin our ace.

That said, I feel like we all deserve more information about Sheets. Tenderness? I mean, tenderness? Is he injured or sore?

Let's look at how he did his last four starts (I'm at work and don't have the chance to get all the numbers so I'm going off of memory here. Please correct/update for me if you wish):

-- Mets: He pitched five innings of two-hit, shut out ball before he experienced tightness in the groin. He left, we lost, and it started our historic Sept. crash.

-- Padres: CG SO.

-- He got shelled by the Phillies.

-- Cubs: One hit, one run through two innings, leaves with soreness.

This is the closest this guy has been to the playoffs in his career. And he's not playing because he's sore and tender.

I used to think everyone was unfair on Ben before this year. Then, he had real injuries. Now, I just don't get it.

It's the most important stretch for this team in a quarter century. Our rental is agreeing to pitch regularly on short rest. And Ben's sore.

I'm beginning to question his heart. You're supposed to battle until you have nothing left to give in situations like these. I feel like he's saving himself for something else.

I think Kurkjian on ESPN said Yovani will start and go three innings.

I agree with most of your assessments.

- avoid suppan and parra if at all possible

- I wouldn't risk YoGo's bright future...shut him down unless you have no other bullpen options some game

- deFelice would be a good option for a spot start and hopefully eat up 4 or 5 innings

Depending on how all the starters feel, I would do the following (assuming sheets is done):

Wed - CC (already named)

Thurs - McClung on short rest (short leash just like Sunday)

Friday - Suppan (don't see any other good options)

Saturday - Bush on short rest

Sunday - If tied/1 game back...CC on short rest...If up 1 game...bullpen by committee starting with defelice, dillard or cv...whichever is most rested

I like the stability CV gives to the bullpen, so I don't want to start him, but with Mota and Gagne pitching fairly decent and Gallardo possibly available, we could probably afford to use up CV as a starter on Friday instead of Soup.

If Yo is actually starting...I find that to be a huge lapse of judgement...

Yo is officially starting tomorrow, but he will be told to take it easy in the hitting/fielding/running department.  We'll see how that works.

Please don't sacrifice our future by this move, Dale...

Forgive my ignorance, but if the season ends and the Crew - Mets are tied, then they have a play-in game correct? It doesn't go down to a tie-breaker method?

If the Brewers and Mets tie, there's a one game play-in in New York via a lost coin flip.

North side, good to see you make the jump over here.

McClung will likely get the start on Friday on regular rest.

Now the site is saying Soup is pitching Friday and Sheets on Saturday.  Perhaps they're sitting on McClung as a safety valve.
