Prospect #22: Brent Brewer

This year we’ll be releasing our top 25 list in conjunction with the people over at Bernie’s Crew, which means the list is going to posted somewhat out of order to match up with what Jim has for his Top 25. An up-to-date list of the Between the Green Pillars Top 25 can be found at the bottom of the page.

Brent Brewer / SS / 6’2” 180 LBS / Born 12/19/87

It finally happened.

Sort of.

At long last, Brent Brewer started hitting a little bit. There was a lot of head scratching when the Brewers promoted Brewer from low A to high A ball midseason after he put up a .213/.294/.310 line in 174 AB’s at West Virginia. The excuse at the time was that Brewer would feel more comfortable moving closer to home, but it was a little hard to see how that was going to help. Well, since he really didn’t have anywhere to go but up, that is exactly what happened. Moving to a tougher league to hit in, he posted a less putrid line of .251/.316/.349 the rest of the way in Brevard.

Then came the fall league and hopefully his big breakout. Playing in a spot opened up by multiple injuries to guys the Brewers intended to send, Brewer hit .300/.344/.700 in 30 AB’s in the Arizona fall league. You’re probably wondering, “isn’t that a really small sample, though?” Well, of course it is, but when you’re drowning in a river, you don’t complain about the size of the lifejacket someone throws you. There is also the little matter of Brewer’s defense, for which the word “underdeveloped” was coined. God willing, Brewer will build on his limited success and finally tap into all that potential that we’ve been hearing about since he was drafted when he likely moves to AA Huntsville to start 2009.
