Too many 1 inning, or even 1 out specialists. I long for the days of 4 man rotations with 9 total pitchers on the roster.

Remeber the early 80's Red Sox and Orioles going with 3 man rotations for the last 6 weeks in seasons to get to the playoffs. Most of todays starters would die.

Riske, maybe an inning.

But then each of them would have pitched 4 of the last 5.

Had he pitched 3 guys each an inning instead it may not have mattered Saturday, but then the options sunday, when Suppan crashed and burned early would have been much more limited, with most of the staff having pitched 4 of 5 nights in the last week.

As I tried to point out, Villanueva is better than your standard long reliever, and I think it is a mistake for Yost yo use him as such. I also don't think the bullpen has been so overused that guys like Stetter, Riske or Gagne couldn't have gone an inning or less.

I never complained about Yost using too many relievers per night last year. He was given a pen with limited multi inning options and that really wasn't his fault. I had other problems that aren't really relevant here.

I understand that Yost doesn't have multiple "long men" at least until CC is a Brewer, and that Yost is limited. In my mind, that actually means he needs to be even more careful in how he chooses to deploy CV. This is a case where there were multiple relievers ready and able to pick up those last two innings and CV's ability to "eat innings" really wasn't needed.

Last year we all got to listen to everyone complain about how tired the bullpen was from him using 2-3 relievers every night. Now when he doesn't, he's screwed up?

If you look at the previous three games he used 4 and 5 pitchers in each of them. By using Villenueva for 3 1/3 he saved a bunch of other arms that would have been pitching for the 3 or 4th time in 4 days.
