  • Taking You Behind the Scenes of ESPN's Jim Rome is Burning

Wednesday I flew to Los Angeles, CA to shadow the set of the Jim Rome Is Burning show for 2 days. The goal is to see what it's really like to put together a 30 minute show, and to get a closer look at what it might be like to be a full-time sports icon like Rome is.

Plus, I'll get to let you guys in on everything that I learn while I'm out here. If you haven't heard of Mandt Bros Production, I'm sure you'll recognize some of their shows: Jim Rome, The ESPY Awards, and Beg, Borrow & Deal. Anyway, Michael Mandt runs the recording studio in LA that I am visiting...and let me tell you that it is not what I expected!

The show used to be filmed in Hollywood like you would expect, but when Rome wanted to move to Orange County, they needed to find something that was much closer. There really isn't much for studio production, so they just ended up buying a big warehouse and building their own set (in 1 week). The entire set is literally encased in walls of styrofoam to block out the sound of the neighboring cement/steel facility. Not as glamorous as I might have imagined, but they are one of the only shows with their own full-functioning studio!

The production process for a single 30 minute show goes something like this:

    - Rome shows up around 5:45am to write his script for the day (yes, he writes his own stuff everyday)!

    - The staff goes through the script to pull all of the quotes and video clips. They have to call ESPN headquarters in Bristol, CT for everything they don’t have each day. ESPN files them over to 1 guy, 2 guys edit them, a third works on coloring, and another does all of the graphics.

    - Another team works through the script to set up the timing for the teleprompter. Between the quotes, clips, and Jim's talk time, they need to hit an exact amount of time each day, leaving room for commercials.

    - Rome leaves to do his radio show at a studio about 20 minutes away. 3 hours in a single-man show each day is impressive!

    - All of the video clips are put on a special reel and sent out to the “production truck.” It’s basically a super high-tech custom trailer out back with about 50 monitors and an electronics switchboard to die for! That’s where all of the sound, engineering, graphics, video, and production come together for the final product.

    - Rome comes back around 12:30, heads to his dressing room to change, and comes out on the set about 15 minutes before they’ll start recording for a read through.

    - He does only 1 read through of the teleprompter, makes a few wording changes here and there, and then they go live. Rome is all business...a total pro at what he does.

Make sure you check back tomorrow because I'll be getting you some pictures on set. AND maybe we'll get to meet one of the Fantasy Sports Girls!

  • Lebron scores 16 points in the first 3 minutes of the 2nd half?!? Then Charlie V. gets ejected!

So the Cavs come in with a record of 41-11, and at the top of the Eastern Conference, and the Bucks are coming in at the 8th slot with a record of 27-30. So even though it’s a home game for the Bucks, I have to say with all honesty that I expect them to lose by at least 10 points. Call me mean…I can’t help it. So I am a bit surprised at halftime when they are winning 57-51! The last point scored was a 3-pointer from Lebron that was almost from half court…sick.

As expected, there are more fans (18,076) here than I’ve seen all year long. Is it because Luke Ridnour is finally back after his thumb injury? Hmmm, I think it was explained by the roar of applause Lebron James got when he was announced into the starting lineup. He didn’t look totally on top of his game in the first half (even after scoring 25 points). But after scoring 16 points in the 1st 3 minutes of the 2nd half, I have no more criticism to give.

I don’t know what was said in the locker room, but it must have been good! Bucks went from a consistent lead, to trying to keep up! One of the most insane few minutes of basketball I have ever seen…ever.

    Here’s the Lebron James 2min, 50 sec Breakdown: 15’ jump shot, 3 point 27’ jumper, 3 point 26’ jumper, 3 point 26’ jumper, 3 point 25’ jumper, 14’ jump shot. 16 points. Insane!

Then Charlie V gets ejected from the game after a “flagrant” foul, which basically means he took Cavalier player #17 Varejao down by the face and a big fight broke out. It was totally insane.

    Score           1st     2nd     3rd      Final

    Bucks            27       57      82        103

    Cavaliers        25       51      86        111

    Top Scorers: Lebron James-55; Williams-23; Villanueva-26; Jefferson-17

    Extras:

-SUNDAY- “Bucks Wives Save Lives” silent auction to be held from 3pm-halftime. Bid on autographed merchandise, game-worn jerseys, and much more! All proceeds go to the Milwaukee *** and Cervical Cancer Awareness Program.

-MONDAY- Blood Drive at the Bradley Center- 8th Annual from 7am-7pm in Lobby A. Anyone (age 17 and up and at least 110lbs) who donates will get 2 tickets to a future Bucks game and a T-shirt! Free parking at structure on 4th/Highland. If you have questions call 1-877-BE-A-HERO

-Greg Jennings made the jumbo-tron and was met with wild cheers and a standing ovation! Go Pack Go! He took a few half court shots for fun and rimmed them! Maybe he should have been a basketball player.

-I am sitting next to Doug Russell, who has had me on he and Mike’s Sports Radio 1250 morning show a few times. He knows I have a soft spot in my heart for Lebron, and at one point I missed an airball that Lebron had. Doug made sure I knew it, and the only thing I could quietly spout out was “It’s ok baby!” Ha. Good thing he’s the only one that heard!

-Bucks’ mascot Bango is still limping around in his brace after a knee injury he sustained entertaining at the All Star Game in Phoenix, AZ. He’s supposed to have surgery in March. Good luck Bango!!!

-5 area high school principals each had 1 chance to make a basket. If they made it, their school would get $100,000. If they missed…nothing. No pressure, huh? No one made it. :(
  • Why Some Consider this Sunday the Best Day of the Year!

If you’re not headed to the Bucks game at 4pm on Sunday to watch them take on Denver, you may want to consider going to one of the best events of the year… Brewfest 2009!

Held at the Milwaukee Ale House in the 3rd Ward, this 12th annual Brewfest benefits the MACC Fund, Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer. Over 30 Breweries come together to bring you the best! Basically, you pay $35 and walk around and taste some of the best beer (30 brewers with 4-5 flavors each= a lot) from 1-5pm, making it quite the Sunday-Funday!

LIVE MUSIC BY WEST SIDE ANDY AND THE MEL FORD BAND.

Always trying to keep you in on the fun!   -your Gridiron Girl

  • Marquette's Big East Battle

As (4) Pittsburgh defeated (1) UConn, 76-68 yesterday in one of the most physical games of the year, Marquette fans couldn't help but get a little more excited! Pittsburgh ended UConn's 13 game winning streak.

If Marquette can beat Seton Hall (14-10, 5-7) tonight at 7pm, it will tie them with Pittsburgh for conference wins/losses at 11-2. This puts them 1 step closer to a possible Big East title! Thank goodness one of the WI teams is a serious contender!

Before yesterday's upset, Marquette was ranked #10 in the AP poll. They're going to have to step it up to stay in the race though, because the 2nd half of their schedule is going to be very tough. Between Feb 25th and March 4th they will face off against the other top 3 Big East teams in a row! UConn on the 25th at home, and Louisville and Pitts on March 1st and 4th, both away games. If they can manage to win all 3, expect them to be a top 5 team in the nation this year.

  • Landry Hits 1,000 and I find some superfans!

    3 in a row??

Heck yeah! Call me premature, but I would call this a streak of confidence for the Badgers. In response to what he did to help get his guys out of the slump they were in, Bo Ryan says he doesn't care what the team is, the color of their jerseys, or what their names are; win or lose, he tells the guys what they need to fix for the NEXT team that they play. It's up to them to get out of the slump. Krabbenhoft says it's the learning that we're seeing now, from losing those games...that's why they're finally starting to win.

To top off the win tonight, Marcus Landry hit the 1,000 point mark, making him the 7th player to do it under Coach Bo Ryan. When he subbed out towards the end of the game he received a well-deserved standing ovation. When Krabbenhoft and Hughes were commenting after the game on Landry's accomplishment and on what a overall great guy he is, Landry said they were goingto make him cry. It's awesome what a tight-knit group they are.

Coming into tonight’ s matchup:  Hawkeyes (13-11) Badgers (14-9)

    Score:              Half        Final

    Badgers            36           69

    Hawkeyes         24           52

Top scorers: Krabbenhoft- 16; Bohannon- 15; Hughes- 14

One of the big plays of the night: Trevon Hughes makes a huge steal at the end of the 1st resulting in 2. Then out of nowhere Marcus Landry is on the ground, and a technical is called on Hawkeyes  #5 Matt Gatens. The crowd goes crazy! Then Bohannon drops a 3 with 1 second left. Nice way to send the Hawkeyes to the locker room!

There was a lot to cheer for all game long as the buckets just kept falling(over 50% shooting in all categories), our big guys kept on the boards, and they played incredible defense (scoring 29 pts off of 14 turnovers). I know the Hawkeyes aren't that great, but they did beat us earlier this season. Why can't they play that well against every team?

There was a lot to look at besides the game tonight…and I’m not just talking about Trevon Hughes’ mini-mohawk (which I loooovvvee)! Meet some of tonight superfans:

If you're picture didn't make it, don't worry because I'll be back for more! Remember, the more paint the better!!!
