  • When It Rains...the Bucks Light a Fire!

If someone had told me that the weather could have been a close predictor of the outcome of this game, I may have agreed, thinking sloppy at best! But even I can be wrong sometimes.

Let me just set up the night for you: I leave the house running late as usual, get stuck waiting for a train,  and then it starts to rain… Wisconsin has arguably the best snow drivers in the country, by rain is another story! One woman was driving on the wrong side of the street downtown and I was almost hit (slam on your breaks and scream naughty words kind of hit) 2 times! Then it’s late so my parking is gone, leaving me 5 blocks away with no umbrella, ugh!

So when the first quarter ends and the Bucks are winning  32 - 23 over Houston I think my luck has changed! They are playing as well as I’ve seen them play this season.

The Houston Rockets are known for many things, but the most noticeable when I walk into the arena is Yao Ming. I mean wow! I knew at 7’6” 310lbs he was super big, but when you’re right next to him it’s crazy; I think I maybe came up to his belly button. His poor mother! How do you give birth to that big of a head? Possibly one of the reasons we were winning by so much in the 1st is because he was on the bench over half of the time…

Coming into the game:  Rockets (31-20), Bucks (24-29)

    Score:             1st        2nd       3rd       Final

    Bucks             32        64        98         124

    Rockets         23        58        76         112

    Top scorers: Sessions- 26, Jefferson- 25, Villanueva- 25; Brooks- 23, Artest- 20, Scola- 20

With Bogut, Ridnour, and Redd out, the Bucks needed to start filling gaps in the roster. Newbie guard Eddie Gill, who the Bucks picked up on a 10 day contract did not play the 1st half. He went in for the 1st time with 30 secs left in the 3rd, then again for the last 5 minutes or so of the game scoring 2 pts. Keith Bogans, the guard acquired in the Feb 5th trade for Lue, definitely did play. He scored 13 pts in about 22 mins.

After the game I headed to the locker rooms for the 1st time and made the mistake of going into the Rockets room first. It was as if someone had died; totally grim. I tried to ask Yao Ming (who didn’t have a great performance with only 7 pts) a few general questions. Some had to be translated into Chinese which makes sense, but either way I didn’t get much after their loss…

If China had an equivalent to the NBA on all levels, would you stay here, or would you rather be there?  Definitely China.

Do you feel like your teammates expect you to get more rebounds than most based solely on your height?  Well I play the center position, so I should.

Do you have a ‘most memorable’ game? There are too many to choose one.

Do you have a favorite quote or song? Quote, no. And music is always changing so I don’t know.

I know it’s not much, but I’ll have to try again after they win one. I heard he is very talkative and even cracks jokes then!

    - February 18th is Soles 2 Souls Day! Bucks fans attending the Chicago game at Bradley Center are encouraged to bring new or slightly used shoes to the game. With their donation to the containers at Lobby A, B, C, D entries, fans will receive a discount ticket offer and a "I Shared My Sole" sticker to indicate support of the project. Shoes will then be shipped to New York to be included in the NBA Basketball without Borders effort that is working nationally to send shoes to Africa.

-Carl (Rockets) and Marcus (Badgers) Landry’s parents are a standout cheering section by themselves a few rows behind the Rockets’ bench. Must be nice to have their son play in WI for a change!

-Halftime show: A body contortionist who can shoot a bow and arrow with her legs! It started out a bit risqué, but when she hit the bullseye in the end I was sold!

    - Sessions had a mysterious large red stain on the back of his shorts that was seriously distracting. I’m thinking red Gatorade. One timeout later and it was gone though.  :)

  • Pro Bowl Highlights. Larry Fitzgerald Game MVP

Photo: Ronen Zilberman / Associated Press

I was going to write a whole synopsis on the Pro Bowl... but then I decided that nobody really cares except the players and their families, so I'll just do the quick stats highlights.  :)  For all of the video highlights go to NFL.com

Just to seal the deal on one of the best receiving seasons ever, Larry Fitzgerald was named the Pro Bowl 2009 MVP. He walked away with 5 catches for 81 yards and 2 TDs. Is it just me, or does anyone else think he should have been an obvious choice for league MVP this year instead of Peyton Manning?? Even before the Super Bowl he was a highlight reel all season!

    FINAL:  NFC  30  AFC  21

QBs: NFC- Drew Brees threw for 142 yards and 1 TD; Eli Manning threw for 111 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT in the end zone; Kurt Warner threw for 8 yards... ha.

AFC- Peyton Manning threw for 151 and 1 TD; Kerry Collins threw for 108 with 1 TD and 1 INT; Jay Cutler threw for 48 yards and had 1 INT.  We'll toss all the INTs up to the best defensive backs in the business.

RBs: Vikings' Adrian Peterson ran for 48 yards and 1 TD, and the Bills' Marshawn Lynch also ran for 48 yards.

WRs: NFC- Larry Fitzgerald was the obvious standout with 5 catches for 81 yards and 2 TDs. Steve Smith of the Panthers caught 6 for 89; Anquon Boldon caught 2 for 27.

AFC- Tony Gonzalez of the Chiefs set a new Pro Bowl record in receiving with 98 yards and also pulled in 1 TD. Reggie Wayne of the Colts had 4 catches for 45 yards; Brandon Marshall of the Broncos had 5 catches for 44; and Owen Daniels (former Badger) of the Texans caught 2 for 30 and 1 TD.

Defense: NFC- Justin Tuck of the Giants had 2 sacks; Jared Allen of the Vikings and Julius Peppers of the Panthers each had 1 sack. Also, Peppers and Antoine Winfield of the Vikings recorded big INTs.

AFC- Robert Mathis of the Colts had 2 sacks, and Dwight Freeney also of the Colts had 1 sack. Both Darelle Revis of the Jets and Owen Daniels of the Texans had INTs. Big day for Owen!

  • Bucks Trade 1 Guard and the Other Breaks His Thumb!

Left: Keith Bogans, Right: Luke Ridnour

It seems like a no-brainer, trading Tyronn Lue for Keith Bogans. Lue, a 6'0" 175lb prior free agent in his 11th season, averaging 4.0 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 13.1 minutes per game. Bogans, a 6'5" 215lb guard from Orlando, averaging 5.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 22.3 minutes per game.

He's younger and taller... but was this the right decision for the Bucks? It would seem fine, until hours later when starting guard Luke Ridnour fractured his right thumb and will miss approximately four weeks of action. Ridnour sustained the injury during yesterday’s practice at the Bucks Training Center in St. Francis, WI. According to the Bucks' website, Ridnour, 27, has appeared in 49 games this season (all starts) and averaged 10.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and team-highs of 5.7 assists (20th in the NBA) and 1.4 steals (18th in the NBA) per game. His 2.84 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks him 15th in the league and his 89.4 free throw percentage is 10th best in the NBA.

It just seems like bad things keep happening to this team! Are they cursed? Is this one of those years where they need to deal with it and focus on rebuilding and maybe winning next year?

  • Phelps Caught Smokin a Bowl...So Now What??

So you're a record-breaking Olympic athlete, out at a college party, and you get asked if you want to take a hit. What do you do? You know that you make millions each year in endorsements as USA's golden child...but who's going to know, right? Obviously everyone will!

Did he really think that no one was going to take a picture of that? Every college student is smart enough to know that any magazine or newspaper would pay big bucks for something like that! At 23, you're not just a dumb kid anymore; it's no longer a good excuse. You are a role model to millions of kids, and a very public representative of the United States, whether you like it or not.

Phelps earns a conservative estimate of 5 million a year from deals with ten major companies, including Hilton Hotels, Omega watches, Kellogg’s cereals and Speedo swimwear. Speedo paid Phelps a $1 million bonus for winning his eight gold medals in Beijing. Just like his having been photographed a few months ago fondling strippers in Las Vegas -- nothing illegal about that, but probably not a picture that delights the companies he endorses. When asked about the incident Phelps says,

``I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment.  I’m 23 years old, and despite the successes I have had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner that people have come to expect from me.   For this, I am sorry.  I promise my fans and the public – it will not happen again.’’

Right now, no major repercussions have happened. He may be suspended for up to 2 years. The South Carolina Sheriff's Dept may to criminal action. Sponsors may pull him.

I personally think that what he did was really dumb, but I am not surprised. I suppose that I have been conditioned by our stars and our media to always expect some type of fallout...rehab or something. It seems like a fad recentely, like it's "cool" to go to rehab these days. Phelps isn't, but you get what I'm saying.
