Catching up with former Badger & Domincan star Ray Nixon

Fall is here and that means the students are finally back on campus for the semester. It also means that many of the former basketball players are now making their way overseas to continue their basketball careers, but former Badger and Dominican High School star Ray Nixon is already in full swing. Last year Ray averaged 16.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game playing for Namika Lahti in Finland. Ray is in the top league in France this year, playing for Spo Rouen, and we caught up to him with a few quick questions...

SB: What do you like most about playing in France?

Ray Nixon: So far I like the team atmosphere that we have in our club, everyone wants to win and we are working hard day in and day out to ensure that.

SB: How are you playing? How is your team playing?

Ray Nixon: Right now we are still training in the preseason, but we have some friendly games coming up.

SB: What did you learn while at Wisconsin that helps your game the most right now?

Ray Nixon: I learned to be a patient player at Wisconsin. Things may not always go your way and you really have to be humble and respect the game of basketball, and if you do, it will pay off for you.

SB: What from home do you miss more than anything else?

Ray Nixon: I miss my family and most of all my son Amare' Nixon. He just turned one last April - may be a shock to some! lol

SB: Do you play with or against any former teammates or former opponents?

Ray Nixon: Yes, there are a lot of Big Ten players in this league, but two in particular are my ex point guard Kam Taylor, who plays on our rival team Le Harve, and Mohammad Hachad from Northwestern who plays on my team.

SB: If you could have anything from Madison sent to you, what would it be?

Ray Nixon: Henry Perez Guerra, our team health advisor and Scott H, our strenght and conditioning coach. Those guys work miracles!

SB: How often are you in contact with your old coaches, college or high school?

Ray Nixon: Im so busy that I rarely stay in touch with any of my coaches, except for my high school coach Paul Wollersheim.

SB: If you could give one of your former teammates a hard time right now, who would it be, and what would you say?

Ray Nixon: I would give Alando Tucker a hard time but those joke would have to go off record.

Thanks Ray and best of luck to you in France this year!

Cool...Ray Ray should be in the D-League or on some teams list to play in the NBA. He has that type of NBA body and game...Great great work Jimbo to get us up to speed on where these local and statewide kids are playing! Outstanding...great questions too. I always like Nixon's game an patience an respect for the game is great advice for others to read and take to heart. Both Dwight Burke and Ray Nixon said that in both of your interviews. Humiltiy is another key. That will work well for the MU trio as we see where those three great ballers will land....Good luck Ray and I will certainly try to keep up with his team in France...Stay tough, sharp, and get a PC and web cam so you can see your son's first step, and first teeth come in...That is a shame you are in France and he is here in the states and you can't experience your baby boy growing up at that age...That more then anything will keep your spirits up and get you through tough times that far away from home. Stay up Ray and always Play smart and Play to win the right way like Bo' taught you!
