High School Football Playoffs Are Upon Us!

The 2009 High School Football Playoffs get underway tonight around the state and it is time for some predictions!!!!!

Division 1
Bracket

Champion - Marquette
The last three years the state champ had to get through Marquette High in order to reach Madison, this year I do not believe that will happen. Let by a strong defense that has only allowed 20 points in the last 7 games, the Hilltoppers have outscored their opponents 348 - 68, an average of 38-7. The swarming defense is led by the Trotter brothers ()Marcus & Michael) where the offense is led by QB Kevin Fink and RB Brock LaFace. If the Hilltoppers can get past Kenosha Bradford in round three, look for them to pull it out in Madison.

Underdog - Madison Memorial
I don't see a strong underdog in the D1 bracket, but I do like Madison Memorial in the first round behind the aireal assault of Mike Moss and Lechein Neblett. If Memorial can get past Appleton North, their dreams will come crashing down against Stevens Point.

First Round Upset - Fond du Lac over Bay Port
It may be a stretch, but Fond du Lac could pull off the upset over Bay Port behind the running of Tucker Reimer.

Division 2
Bracket

Champion - Waunakee
In Division 2 I like prennial powers Kimberly and Waunakee to meet in the final, but Waterford could make some noise here. If Trent Cummings can lead Waunakee and their balanced attack past Monona Grove, look for them to top Kimberly in Camp Randall.

Underdog - Marshfield
With the underdog I am torn between Marshfield and Cedarburg, but will go with Marshfield primarily because of the consistant play of QB Luke Accola.

First Round upset - Marshfield over LaCrosse Logan
Look for LaCrosse Logan to get knocked out in the first round by Luke Accola and Marshfield.

Division 3
Bracket

Champion - Pewaukee
This could be Pewaukee's year to take state. Bryan Spakowicz is just too tough to stop, and he has the line up front to blow open some holes for him. The winner of the Jefferson vs McFarland game could present a major road block for the Pirates, but if they can survive that, the Pirates could sail in Madison

Underdog - Seymour
Seymour knows how to win the close ones, and their defense has been pretty solid. That could be the edge they need to make some noise.

First Round Upset - Cathloic Memorial over Brown Deer
Memorial plays in the toughest conference in the state, so pay no attention to their record come playoff time. Zanoni, Kocour and Karczewski make for a pretty balanced offense.

Division 4
Bracket

Champion - Northwestern
Until someone proves that their ground game can be stopped, Northwestern will run all over their opponents. They have run for over 3,500 yards already this year

Underdog - Brodhead/Juda
They lost two of their last three games, but that doesn't mean that the Cardinals aren't a force to be reckoned with. Those two losses came to Parkview and McFarland, two of the toughest in the state. If they play their game and keep the ball on the ground, they could pull out some big ones.

First Round Upset - Brodhead/Juda over New Glarus/Monticello
As suggested above, Brodhead/Juda is much stronger than their record.

Division 5
Bracket

Champion - Lancaster
With Colby, Lancaster, Marathon, Darlington, Pardeville, Springs, Cedar Grove-Belgium, Peshtigo and Brillion, this has got to be the toughest division to pick a favorite. With 55 offensive touchdowns this year, Lancaster is my pick. Trevor Landon and Nathan Budack have combined for 1,800 yards and 37 TDs on the ground. Outscored their opponents 403 - 144.

Underdog - Darlington
With an 8-1 record they are hardly an underdog, but the #3 seed is a slap in the face to Darlington, and they will be tough to stop.

First Round Upset - Poynette over Pardeeville
Poynette has a balanced offensive attack with RB Levi Campion and QB Cody Odegaardand could pull of the round 1 upset of the Bulldogs.

Division 6
Bracket

Champion - Shiocton
Shiocton looks to have the better bracket in comparison, and should cruise through the region until they battle Bangor for the right to go to state. If they get past Bangor, it won't be any easier in Camp Randall as any of Wild Rose, Pacelli, Edgar or Flambeau poses a huge threat for the title, but Dylan Van Straten, along with his 1,360 yards and 22 TDs, control the Chiefs' destiny.

Underdog - Blair Taylor
If Hank Kujak can continue to complete over 57% of his passes, the Wildcats could make more noise than my body did after running in the Blair Cheese Chase.

First Round Upset - Thorp over Hurley
The Cardinals will rebound from their loss to Owen-Withee and knock off Hurley.

Division 7
Bracket

Champion - DeSoto
Probably the second toughest division to pick behind Division 5. Shell Lake, Gilman, Potosi, Catholic Central, Plum City - wow. Look for De Soto to take the title in Madison. Dylan Tully on the ground and Dylan Vassar will get it done.

Underdog - McDonell Central
McDonell Central has lost to some tough teams this season, and are strong enough to pull off a couple of wins. Andy Davis and Alex Hiess compliment each other well and keep defenses honest.

First Round Upset - Owen-Withee over Port Edwards
The Blackhawks knocked off Thorp last week and has won 5 of their last 6. Look for them to take down Port Edwards in the battle between Blackhawks.

Good luck to all of the teams participating in this year's playoffs!!

On another note, can we get someone to clean up the AP voting? No offense to the Trojans, but Tosa West has been recieving votes in the Large Schools Division of the AP Poll all season long, and in the final poll, Tosa West recieved 5 votes. Really? With a 4-5 record? Whoever has been voting for Tosa West should be removed from the process!!! Here are the final polls.....
