My Reaction To The Gallardo News

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Make no mistake, this is a devastating blow to the Brewers.  I wrote yesterday that I could not believe he wasn't injured, and it turned out that he was very injured.  There is no official word yet on how long Yovanni will be out, but my best guess is that the best case scenario would be a quick surgery to repair the ACL and maybe, just maybe, he could return in September.

Gallardo is one of the two or three most vital members of the 2008 Brewers and his absence severely dampens the outlook for making the post-season this year.  It can be done but it will be much harder now.  It will be almost impossible for Doug Melvin to make a trade for a frontline starting pitcher for weeks or perhaps months, if at all.  The players the Brewers have will just have to step up and play at a higher level to pick up the slack.

It has certainly taken the fun out of Brewers' baseball today.  Nothing like having to get that kind of news and then go out and take on Roy Oswalt.  I interviewed Doug Melvin at length tonight and that audio should be available here in the blog shortly.

Here's the audio of my interview with Doug Melvin.

This is really too bad.  I think with a healthy Gallardo, they could have finally survived a Sheets injury.  Now, I think we're back to the same old story - they could be OK, but if Sheets gets injured again & misses substantial time . . . that will make it almost impossible for them to win the division.  Not many teams can survive injuries to their top two starters.

I predicted a no-no for Gallardo this year, dang.  Not only will they miss his pitching, but he was a nice bat in the lineup.

Now tell Sheets to quit biting his nails before he's out with a hangnail again.

There is no doubt that it removes whatever pitching margin-for-error the club had amongst the starters, and it remains to be seen whether the Brewers have enough bullets to overcome that one injury alone.  All teams lack depth of #1 and #2 starters and there isn't likely to be a solution to this problem anytime soon.  Add in the Turnbow struggles which have resulted in his exit from the roster and the margin-for-error in the pen is gone too.  I hate to see this happen so early in the season.
