Okay, I know one win isn't enough to REALLY negate the "PNC Curse" or make any of us forget about the nine-game-road-losing streak, but it sure was nice to see a well-pitched game and a solid Brewers' 7-2 win in Pittsburgh. Milwaukee dominated the Pirates at Miller Park last year, winning eight of nine contests, but Pittsburgh once again smoked the Crew at the confluence, posting five wins in seven tries. With the victory tonight, the Brewers' alltime record at PNC is now 21-42. Ugly.
The negative from the game was the performance of Eric Gagne, who continues to struggle mightily. Gagne finally left the game with two outs in the ninth with an undisclosed physical ailment after giving up a two-run home run, a single, and two walks. Getting Gagne turned around is one of the two or three biggest keys to the 2008 season.
Seth McClung was promoted into the starting rotation and will get a shot this weekend in Washington, DC against the Nationals. He earned it with good, consistent pitching all season. McClung had only one bad outing (5 ER in 2 IP vs. Cincy April 9th) all season out of the pen, and again looked dominant against the Pirates tonight. He has the stuff to be a top pitcher but has not realized his potential to this point. Hopefully the light bulb is now on. The Brewers are auditioning heroes for their pitching staff and need to find some if they are to be a factor in the NL Central this year.
I enjoyed the weekly Tuesday night in-game chat this evening. The archive of our fifth (and most of the sixth) inning chat can be found HERE.
Dale Sveum and I chewed the fat today. Hear what he has to say about the current state of the Brewers HERE. He liked some things he saw over an otherwise dismal weekend in Boston, especially offensively, and I'm sure he liked what he saw on the field during the opener tonight here from the bats.
There was little or no fallout from Ryan Braun's frank opinions expressed in the Fenway clubhouse after Sunday's game. I think most people around and on the team generally agreed with him.
I kept a low profile on the off-day yesterday, eating a nice grilled salmon dinner at The Fish Market and watching Braveheart on TV in my room. I wish we'd have had William Wallace with us in Boston last weekend.
