Gallardo Hoping To Start Late In '08

I caught up with Yovanni this evening before the third Brewers-Cubs game at Miller Park and quizzed him about his rehab from ACL surgery and the prospects of a return to the mound in '08.  There is no doubt that his rehab is going very well, and there is no question that he wants to get back this year, preferably in his usual role as a starter.  You can hear his words and tone of voice HERE.  Getting Gallardo back in September has been a dream of the Brewers and their fans, and it is looking more positive with every passing day.

Thanks for the interview Jim.  Yovani is such an intricle part of the Brewers future, and his ACL injury was a big blow to the club.  I still think Doug Melvin would have went after CC Sabathia if Gallardo was still in the rotation anyway, but his presence was sorely missed this Cub series at Miller Park.

Speaking of this series, I'm not a fan of Ned Yost, but I think some Brewer fans switching to panic mode and blaming everything on Yost after this current homestand is a little premature.

I hope fans remember the Crew took 2 series in Chicago earlier in the year when the Brewers really struggled in Spring. This Cubs team just came off a series loss to Florida @ Wrigley, but they're definately a solid ball club with the addition of Harden...playing on all cylinders..and it's obvious Soriano & Ramirez have the Brewers number.  Ramirez always seems to shine gainst the Brewers.

But I don't think they're leaps and bounds better than MKE at this point.

I would agree with writer Michael Hunt that this Brewer team sort of rolled over this series, and it happened right after Rickie Weeks committed the error of turning a routine DP and tossed the ball into Section 110 instead. Actually, I saw some deflation after the 7-0 road trip after Suppan blew up in the Astro series. That would be where I would question Yost..and his decision to let Suppan continue.. according to Yost, Suppan just "had to make 1 more pitch" to make, and I think he gave up a 3-run shot afterthat.

This series, I think the Brewers realized they were playing the team that has lead the division all season...tensed up and failed to bring RISP to home plate... and played poor defense.  Up and down in the order and in the rotation, the Crew is not a team that should lose 3 out of 4 to the Cubs.

If Ned Yost says this is a different club because they experienced meaningful  August/Sept. baseball last year, I would have to think there's positives that will come after a current 1-5 homestand.

Great article Jim, Thank you. I am finding myself being very emotional over this homestand much like i am with a packers loss. The brew crew did not earn thier money this week at all, and i firmly believe they should apoligize to the fans for falling flat on thier faces at home. I listened to the game on the radio and it almost sounded like there were more cubs fans there than brewers fans, i got sick to my stomach. The Cubs are a great team, but the brewers should have made a better showing than that.

I understand the frustration and, of course, share it to a certain extent.  I have seen so much baseball that I think I am able to let disappointing stretches go more quickly than most fans are, but I certainly enjoyed NOTHING about the Cubs' series.  That said, I really don't look at the Brewers when I think about what happened.  I look at the Cubs.  They played the best series at Miller Park by any visiting team  that I can ever remember seeing, with the possible exception of the Anaheim Angels a few years ago.  Chicago played as well as the team is capable of playing, and it was impressive.  I believe Corey Hart said it best when he made this observation:  "Right now, they're the better team, but it's July. We were the better team in April.  It's not like it matters too much. The only thing that matters is who is the best team in the end."

I personally reject the notion that the Brewers "rolled over", or should somehow apologize for their performance.  Did they play well?  No.  Was it a lack of effort or intensity?  In my opinion, absolutely not.  Much as I might dislike doing it, I have to give the credit to the Cubs.  I think the Cardinals would have to say the same thing about their series against Milwaukee at Busch the week before.  Sometimes you have to tip your cap.  Chicago has the best team in the National League at the moment.  However, they don't hand out trophies in July.
