Fitting End To Packers Hopes

What a steep and graceless fall. In just one year, the Packers have gone from nearly making the Super Bowl to being eliminated from playoff contention with two weeks remaining in the season. It was fitting that the slim hopes of the 2008 Packers were snuffed out in Jacksonville by a bad team in the same kind of loss that has haunted Green Bay all season long. The recipe is familiar. Take a defense that can’t get a stop, mix in a running offense that can’t pick up a yard when it absolutely has to and add a dash of a quarterback who has yet to pull out a close game. The finished product is a 5-9 team. It doesn’t taste very good. When the arguments between players and the hollow cries of “miscommunication” fade, the Packers will face a reality as cold and clear as a winter morning in Green Bay. Everyone from the top down in the organization needs to be held accountable for this season. The defensive shortcomings, some caused by injuries, were glaring. Ted Thompson needs to address the defensive line in particular. The offensive line cannot dominate games. Aaron Rodgers needs to clear the mental hurdle of performing under the pressure of a late-game situation. I don’t care about the relatively low number of interceptions. I don’t care about quarterback ratings. I care about winning. If anyone thinks that Brett Favre wouldn’t have made a difference in at least a few of those close losses, they’re kidding themselves. Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy were rewarded with lucrative contract extensions for the charmed season of 2007. Now it’s up to them to get this team back on track for 2009.

Great post Dennis.  Let's not forget about tow other lucrative contracts, Rodgers and Grant, neither one that any other team would like to inherit at this point in the season.

Favre isn't with the Packers, Dennis, so why waste your keyboard tapping on that subject.  Nitsche would have made a difference too, but he ain't on the roster either.  Jet fans are about to experience what we all know about Favre: a regular season of excitement followed by a season-killing playoff interception. (And I love the guy as much as anyone.)

The O and D lines need addressing this off season, even if Thompson must go the free agency route.  Cut the ties with Herrell as he will not amount to anything.  The O line blocking scheme of "everyone left" or "everyone right" may be fine on first or second down, but it's an abysmal scheme on third and one.  If the type of smaller, quicker linemen needed for the zone blocking scheme aren't physically able to get enough push to convert a third and one or a fourth and one at critical moments, maybe it's best to get new linemen and a new scheme.  With the exception of a half-dozen games at last season's end, the running game has been horrid the past three seasons.

Ted needs to get out of his comfort zone of one or two mediocre free agent backups and banking on the draft.  The team is close to competing, but one or two players won't tip the scales enough.

Thompson's philosiphy of building through the draft and eschewing big free agent signings is a good philosiphy if you're hitting on your draft picks.  But Thompson's draft have produced a decent range of quality but few playmakers.  He needs to recognize that, considering how little prior drafts have contributed, some big fa signings are necessary this offseason instead of standing pat and trying to develop those he's already drafted.
