Calling Will Blackmon and Tramon Williams, it’s your turn to step up and let’s see what you’ve got!Packers cornerback, Al Harris was injured in the first quarter of Green Bay's loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.Mike McCarthy, addressing the media today, waxed optimistically, "I'm hopeful he'll be back, the time frame just hasn't been established."Speaking of Harris’ spleen injury, "It's a serious injury," McCarthy said. "I think that's obvious to everybody. And really, as we move forward, it's a different type of injury. And we will take a cautious approach, and everything we'll do will be in his best interests."Harris has sought out 3 separate medical opinions this week so that he may weigh his options.
He’s definitely OUT for the game this week, vs. Tampa, but might be able to come back at some point this season if he’s able to avoid surgery. All of this brings me back to my original statement regarding Tramon Williams and Will Blackmon. Williams has seen a large amount of his time on the field at nickelback (defensively) and as a punt and kick returner on special teams. Williams gave up a TD to Calvin Johnson, of the Detroit Lions, in week 2 and then 52-yard, over the top catch and run touchdown to Miles Austin this past Sunday night vs. the Cowboys. He’s also been called for a 20 yard pass interference penalty going back to week 1 vs. the Vikings. His level of experience is no where near what Harris brings to the table but his speed and natural ability can make up for that as he learns on the fly.
The other option is Will Blackmon. The 3rd year pro could move up from the dime package to alternate with Williams to tag-team the position until Harris’ return. No matter how you shuffle it around, it’s a loss that won’t be easy to overcome for defensive coordinator, Bob Sanders, and the Green Bay Packers.
