Lets look at the remaining eight teams. The Cards tied for second in the NFC in offensive scoring and were 2nd in total yards. The Cards victory could be credited to playing at home against a rookie QB on the road. The Giants were second and fourth in scoring and total yards, the Eagles fifth and sixth, the Panthers sixth and seventh, respectively. The Panthers and Cardinals offenses both outperformed their defenses and are the reasons the teams are in the playoffs.

On the AFC side, the Steelers, Ravens, and Titans all have top defenses that are the strengths of their teams. Yet the Ravens and Titans were 4th and 6th in offensive scoring. Only the Steelers have a great imbalance tilted toward defense. The Chargers, on the other hand, are the anti-Steelers. The Chargers were the top AFC scoring offense, but finished much further down defensively.

The Chargers win could be attributed to their punter and special teams play, with the Colts pinned consistently inside their 20, and Sproles late 26 yard punt return setting up the tying field goal drive. In OT, the Charger offense drove to a game-winning TD in its first possession. The Charger defense played well, but was certainly not the reason for the San Diego victory.

Well balanced teams win championships.
