  • Packers-Lions: The-Much-Better-Than-It-Could-Have-Been Game Blog

    4th Quarter

    3:28 p.m.  0:00  Packers' 4th Drive
DeShawn Wynn with a 13 yard gain...unnecessary roughness on Josh Sitton....but at least the play proves Wynn can be a factor next year.

6-10 stinks, but it's better than 5-11 and the only loser to the worst team in NFL history.

    3:06 p.m.  2:45  Lions' 3rd Drive
Lions on 3rd down: 5-15.  Make that 5-16.

Much better on fourth, scarily - and again, Calvin Johnson beats someone - this time, Tramon Williams, to get the first down.

Even if the Packers win this game, that proves AGAIN something has to be done on defense.  Wait...late flag?

Ah, it's on Detroit.  Kevin Smith grabbed the ball and pushed it into Josh Sitton's face on the bench.

3rd and 29 - Felton makes a catch but gets nailed by Harris for a 2-yard gain.

4th and 27...wasn't it, yes it was 4th and 26 against Philly in an embarassing loss.  This time...interception by Collins!  Could he go coast to coast?  Nope...penalty marker down.

    "There is your dagger!"

    Phew.

    2:56 p.m.  7:16  Packers' 3rd Drive
    Green Bay 31, Detroit 21
    Rodgers-Driver 71 yd TD pass
How about making it a seven-minute touchdown-scoring drive?

Well, we'll settle for a 71 yard TD bomb to give Rodgers 4,000 yards, Driver 1,000 yards and the Packers back to a two-score lead.

    2:50 p.m.  7:32  Lions' 2nd Drive
    Green Bay 24, Detroit 21
Kevin Smith 9 yd TD run
Thankfully, a Detroit penalty call negates a 35-yard play by Keary Colbert.

Not so thankfully, Al Harris gets burned by Standiford...STANDIFORD?  Geez, also-rans are turning into all pros against Harris.  Sounds like a miscommunication.  Can't afford communication breakdowns.

Kevin Smith just smashed into the end zone and resumed the bite-your-fingernails ailment in Wisconsin.

    2:44 p.m.  9:18  Packers' 2nd Drive
    Green Bay 24, Detroit 14
    Kuhn 5 yd TD run
Ryan Grant gets over 100 yards on the day.  He finally gets it going.

Jennings to the 10 yard line!  Could we be reaching the score that finally puts Detroit into a hole?

Kuhn to the end zone!  YES!

I think we can take a deep breath.

    2:36 p.m.  12:51  Lions' 1st Drive
From the 21, it's a three-and-out, thanks to Jeremy Thompson getting a tip of a pass on 3rd down.  It fluttered like a dying butterfly, or me punting.

    2:31 p.m.  14:24  Packers' 1st Drive (continued from 3rd Quarter)
    Green Bay 17, Detroit 14
Mason Crosby 36 yard field goal
Langston Moore gets a sack at a very inopportune time.

WHERE IS THE FLAG?  Lee Bodden had his hands all over Greg Jennings worse than your average criminal complaint in a Law and Order SUV case!

Well, it forces a field goal, and Mason Crosby gets to show his 67-yard leg again.

    3rd Quarter

    2:27 p.m.  0:00  Packers' 3rd Drive
Ryan Grant "21 yard burst!"...hang on....he ran into the end zone, Wayne thinks the play was whistled dead, but a ref ran with Grant and signaled touchdown.  What's the call?

WHOA!  The ref said TD!  The replay, we think, shows his body never touched the down.  I'm sure Detroit will challenge.

The refs rule that his right hip hit the ground, and looking at the angle the TV folks show, it's right.

That's the first time the opposition has won a challenge on the Packers all year.

Good throw to a wide open James Jones to get across the 50.  This is still scary.

Rodgers has Lee wide open into the red zone...this shows he's looking smart with his progressions...whoa?  INCOMPLETE PASS?  Well, replay shows it, I guess.

Grant powers to the 27 yard line...he's getting 5+ yards on most carries.

    2:12 p.m.  4:31  Lions' 3rd Drive
Mike Montgomery beat his man quickly to stop Kevin Smith on a 2nd down play for a loss, but Colin Cole on the backwash of the play gets a holding call.  It wouldn't have stopped the play, but you commit the penalty and you do it.

You can't give the Lions any hope, people.  This is getting REALLY scary.

After the nine-yard Johnson completion, the words in the newsroom..."This is ridiculous."

Larry before the 3rd down: "You've got to put an end to this madness."

The Packers do on a well overthrown pass, but Peprah nearly had an interception on a diving attempt.

    2:07 p.m.  7:24  Packers' 2nd Drive
Dwayne White cleans up the goodies on a coverage sack.  There is absolutely no excuse for the Packers receivers to not get open on any pass play.

Thank you GREG JENNINGS for hanging on to a 47-yard bomb with a great adjustment on a great throw by Rodgers.

Uh oh, Driver gets a little push with Ernie Sims, but no flags.  Keep your heads, Green Bay, against a frustrated Lions team that just wants to lash out.

3rd and 10 at the DET 33: Donald Lee must have picked up Greg Jennings' earlier dropsie disease and let go a short pass.

Ah, they're GOING for it...and Jones gets the dropsies, but there's some yellow hankies on the tundra.  Drat...a post-play dead ball for a first and 10 for Detroit deep in their own territory.

    1:57 p.m.  10:20  Lions' 2nd Drive
    Green Bay 14, Detroit 14
Orlovsky-C. Johnson 14 yd TD pass
Must make a stuff here, boys.  Or let the Lions penalize themselves with a false start by Backus.

Well, I guess not, thanks to Calvin Johnson being a one-man team who can lead a team back by himself.

    1:50 p.m.  11:36  Packers' 1st Drive
And it ends quickly with a Ryan Grant fumble.  Pearson was unblocked by Packers protectors and he took Ryan Grant's legs out while recovering the football.

We can't give these guys life!!!!

    1:48 p.m.  11:49   Lions' 1st Drive
On a 3rd and three near midfield, another Johnson catch on Harris, and he gets the first down.  Not like it's a major gashing, but another small notch on Johnson's tally against Harris.

Thank you, Standiford, for a holding penalty that wiped out a 19-yard gain.

NO FLAG?  Calvin Johnson smashed Al Harris to the frozen tundra on a deep pass and no call?  Well, it was overthrown, but Harris could have intercepted that pass.

Thankfully, a bad throw from Orlovsky helps limit potential damage on this drive.

    2nd Quarter

    1:27 p.m.  1:28  Lions' 3rd Drive
The Packers choose to eat up time outs with the Lions deep in their own territory running the ball the whole time, and they draw a fair catch opportunity for the Packers to kick a million-yard free kick field goal.

In reality, it would be a 69 yard field goal.  The Packers had better cover it if they miss.

It missed by, like, an inch!  That would have been insane NFL history if that would have worked.

    1:22 p.m.  0:22  Packers' 2nd Drive
Oh would it be nice to end the first half 21-7, but the Packers have a LONG way to go...nearly the length of the field.  Aah, nothing, but they pin the Lions deep.

    1:14 p.m.  3:32  Lions' 2nd Drive
The Lions are using outside running to get the yardage they need, with Kevin Smith grabbing a 1st down on 3rd and 2.

But inside, he's getting nothing, as Kampman, Jolly and Woodson stone him for a -4 loss.

Harris still can't cover Calvin Johnson who gets into Packers territory, and Nick Collins on 3rd down drops a gimme interception.

    1:05 p.m.  7:54  Packers' 1st Drive
Starting at the 10, Ryan Grant proves again again he can get to the second level on a 13-yard run.

Finley with another GREAT catch for 27 yards and a safety proved he can make plays.  This kid's got a future if he keeps his head straight.

And keeps his hands on the ball.  He missed a ball through his hands at the Detroit 10.  He had 5' 9" Dexter Wynn beat.

    12:51 p.m.  13:52  Lions' 1st Drive (continued from 1st quarter)
    Green Bay 14, Detroit 7
Orlovsky-Calvin Johnson 9 yd TD pass
Brandon Chillar actually covered someone on pass defense.  That hasn't happened in seemingly 5 weeks or so.

Another 4th down attempt and Keary Colbert made a catch at the 20 yard line.  I don't expect to see Detroit's punter much all day.

Kevin Smith gets a combo of eight and six yard gains to get a first and goal.  This is not too fun to see Detroit do this.

Johnny Jolly beating Manny Ramirez on 1st down to hold Smith to negative-1 yards.  What did he do, throw a Roger Clemens fastball at his head?  Where's Pedro to toss down Don Zimmer?

Well, Calvin Johnson just figuratively tossed down Al Harris, proving again that he hasn't completely shut down a top receiver in 14 months.

Granted, few could do that recovering from ruptured spleens.

    1st Quarter

    12:45 p.m.  0:00  Lions' 4th Drive
Whoa?  Manny Ramirez at right guard for Detroit?  Where's the dreds?  Where's Manny being Manny?  Just not gonna make the $25M/year, Manny?

3rd and 5 and the tie between simutaneous catches by Calvin Johnson and Al Harris, but Harris gets flagged for unnecessary roughness.

    12:40 p.m.  2:14  Packers' 4th Drive
    Green Bay 14, Detroit 0
    Rodgers-Finley 3 yard TD pass
Driver with a broken tackle to get a first down, and somehow I expect to hear that a lot more today than Detroit trips into Packers territory.

At last, I'm hearing the words "Ryan Grant BREAKS THROUGH!" by Wayne Larrivee, as Grant does what Mike McCarthy challenged him to do - get past the 2nd level on a run.

Scott Wells has to sit on the bench with an injury!

ANOTHER drop by Greg Jennings.  What is this?

At least Jeremichel Finley was able to catch the ball in the end zone.

    12:34 p.m.  4:32  Lions' 3rd Drive
Kampman's working against a rookie today, and he's owning him completely.  So did Tramon Williams on 2nd down with beautiful coverage to break up a great slant throw from Orlovsky to Johnson.

Casey Fitzsimmons got the 3rd down catch, but not the 3rd down, so - I'm HIGHLY surprised (see my sarcasm) - they go for it on 4th, and Orlovsky gets the first...WAIT a minute.  They called a time out before the play started.

That sounds like the Lions this year.

Kevin Smith this time actually does gain the first, as they're in Packers territory.  Enjoy this trip, Lions.  You might not see it much.

Especially with Woodson picking off the next pass!

    12:29 p.m.  6:36  Packers' 3rd Drive
Greg Jennings just missed a chance to further the cause for pummeling the Lions by dropping an in-the-hands perfect throw by Aaron Rodgers.

ANOTHER drop - Ruvell Martin.  Did the Lions put cold butter on the Packers' receivers gloves or something?  I thought the Patriots videotaping Packers signals in '06 was bad.

We can't give these guys hope!

    12:24 p.m.  7:27  Lions' 2nd Drive
Thank you Jason Hunter for three-and-out number two!  A sack because of great coverage on the part of Packers DB's on 3rd and 4 on the 37.

Will Blackmon?  Why do you pick up punts on bounces?  That's the third glaring special teams mistake in the first eight minutes.

    12:17 p.m.  8:49  Packers' 2nd Drive
    Green Bay 7, Detroit 0
DeShawn Wynn 73 yard TD run
DeShawn Wynn!  Love the Packers sweep on the shotgun formation toss!  I guess two teams can do the unusual play call.

    12:12 p.m.  9:47  Lions' 1st Drive
Interesting thing to note that Ryan Pickett ate up Kevin Smith, he was still able to gain two yards because the Lions - the freaking LIONS - got enough penetration to push Pickett back.

Still a three-and-out.  This probably won't be unique today.

When Blackmon was juking and jiving for no return, I noticed a bunch of green shirts within five yards of him, just watching.

    INEXCUSABLE!

    12:08 p.m.  12:12  Packers' 1st Drive
Jordy Nelson takes an Alfred Malone mishandle and runs the botched return back to the Detroit 41!  I think they could use that play a lot to improve the worst kickoff return team in the NFL, especially if they keep Mike Stock as special teams coach.

Oh my goodness - Aaron Rodgers loses the grip on the ball and Daryn Colledge recovers for a -24 loss.  Do they count that as a rushing statistic?  I guess that will hurt his yards per carry.

Got a 3rd and 34 play?  They won't need it with Jennings' nice 13 yard gain.

And they run the ball with DeShawn Wynn...why?  Go for a first down, people!  Put these scaredy-cats away!

Well, they're going for it on 4th and 12...weirder move?  Got Driver for a slant patter for 8 yards.

Huh????  Playcalling and decisions on downs?  Weird.

    Pregame

    12:01 p.m.
The coin toss goes to the Packers and they'll start the game with the ball.

  • Packers-Bears: The Incredibly Sad In-Game Blog

    Overtime

    10:46 p.m.  12:58  Bears' 1st Drive
    Chicago 20, Green Bay 17
    Gould 38 yd FG
Chicago wins the toss and elects to receive.  Will the Packers even get the ball this time out, unlike the Tennessee game?

If so, they'll have to go 70 yards to the end zone, which means 40 yards to field goal range.  That's too little.

Oh no!  Not only a first down to Olsen, but a horse collar tackle by Rouse.  33 yard gain.  Seven more to definite field goal range and a loss.

The defense gives it up again.  The defense gives it up again.  Not by lack of performance, but lack of brains and discipline this time.

Forte HIT IN THE BACKFIELD!  And it's Rouse who makes the play on 2nd down.  That's making up for it.

3rd and 9...MUST hold to nothing this play.  Orton gets Forte for a first down to the 20 yard line and Forte beat Hawk.  A lack of pass coverage by a linebacker dooms Green Bay again.

Field goal good from 38 yards out and the Packers have double digit losses for the first time since 2005.

    4th Quarter

    10:45 p.m.  0:00  Bears' 3rd Drive
Really, Bears' 1st kneeldown to go to OT.

    10:43 p.m.  0:18  Packers' 3rd Drive
The eyes of planet Earth are on Aaron Rodgers.  Will he finally make the comeback he hasn't produced yet, failing three times this year?

Blackmon gets open and gets wide open along the sideline and Adrian Peterson horse collars him out of bounds!  An extra 15 yard penalty to put the ball deep into Chicago territory, to the Chicago 35 yard line.

Rodgers and Ruvell Martin on 1st down miscommunicated.  Cue Led Zeppelin: "COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN!!!!"

Rodgers to Jennings and Graham made a great one-on-one tackle play to hold him to two yards.  Good play call, just a great tackle.

    3rd and 8....NEED a first down.  Don't want a 51-yard field goal attempt.

Jones with a LEAPING catch for a first down over Graham and Jones felt the hard ground.  Two minute warning...just run the clock down and get first downs, boys.

1st-10 at the Chicago 24...a short run with Grant and Chicago's calling time out, hoping for another shot.

2nd-9 at the Chicago 23-24, and Grant gets five yards, and Mason Crosby is warming up his leg as much as is humanly possible in 0' F.

3rd and 5 at the 19 1/2...and Grant gets zippo, setting up Crosby.

Is Crosby dreaming of a winning Christmas with a 38 yard field goal with:25 left?

No.  blocked and the Bears knock it out of bounds.  Overtime probable.

    10:30 p.m.  3:11  Bears' 2nd Drive
    Green Bay 17, Chicago 17
    Forte 3 yd TD run
Uh oh...Forte in the open and A.J. Hawk has to chase him down after a 28 yard run.  The Bears, like four straight opponents in the fourth quarter, are feeling it late on offense.

Forte again, and again, and again, and he's the meal ticket right now for Chicago as they run down the clock while trying to get closer to the end zone.

3rd down and they're at the four yard line after a Hester completion....and they stop Hester a yard short.

Fourth and 1 at the GB 4....HUGE, HUGE play here, people.

Forte up the middle...gets the first down as Pickett meets him.  Four shots for the end zone with 3:00 left.

1st down: Forte up the middle, sifts through, and the Bears have tied this tame.

OK, Rodgers, overcome this "can't do it late" thing.

    10:21 p.m.  7:36  Packers' 2nd Drive
Driver starts the drive well with a wonderful diving catch, but Tommie Harris hurt Rodgers for a six-yard loss and forces a 3rd and 13.

Momentum at stake with Chicago's crowd jumping.  Rodgers has a pass blocked by the interior line.

Why am I fearful Hester may run one back?  Hester has to dance, but gets a seam and gets to the Chicago 45.

    10:15 p.m.  9:36  Bears' 1st Drive
Aaron Rouse gets up limping from coverage on the kickoff...that's a problem.

Nick Collins stopping what would have been a perfect throw-and-catch to Desmond Clark, as after Clark had it high above his head in his hands, Collins legally stuck his elbow in Clark's face guard.  Beautiful stop.

Oh no....Forte gets into Green Bay territory with a smart swing pass with Forte.

I'm feeling like I did last time the Packers had a frigid night game...the NFC Championship....like this lead is not safe.  I'm scared.

Orton is playing pitch and catch with his receivers...Olsen getting open.  There's not much the Packers have been able to do to stop these guys over the last, seemingly, 50,000 years.

A 3rd and 10 near the GB 39...a perfect throw right to Nick Collins!  The Bears fan here in the newsroom is pulling a few George Carlin words.

    10:03 p.m.  12:58  Packers' 1st Drive
    Green Bay 17, Chicago 10
    Crosby 28 yd FG
Rodgers finds DeShawn Wynn close to the first down marker, right at the nine yard line...Wynn - where have we heard that name before?  Last year, maybe?

4th and 1...get the points, Mike, don't think about going for it.  Get the points.

Uh oh...he's going for it....big risk, four point reward, but if you fail, that's HUGE mo to Chicago.

DeShawn Wynn!  He finally does what John Kuhn couldn't do, about 340 times this year...a first down.

And, of course, on 2nd down, Aaron Rodgers loses five on a QB draw that was well diagnosed.

And on 3rd down, Rodgers nearly gets picked.

    3rd Quarter

    9:54 p.m.  1:57  Bears' 3rd Drive
HUGE INT by Woodson!  Great block by Rouse to get to the 30 yard line!  Number 6 on the year and what a time to get it!

    9:51 p.m.  3:31  Packers' 2nd Drive
The Bears force another 3rd down, but a managable two yards to go...DEEP PASS TO FINLEY!  Great throw in the biggest play of Finley's rookie season.  34 yards, and finally, Finley shows up.

NO FLAG on Tillman for basically pulling on Driver at the five yard line?  Tillman was hugging him and pulling him down!  Come on!

3rd and 6 at the 28...and Rodgers' throw was off Driver's hands at the 13 yard line...fourth down.

Thanks, Matt Flynn, for bobbling the snap, forcing a low kick by Mason Crosby.  No way was that good.

    9:44 p.m.  6:23  Bears' 2nd Drive
Orton had Hester a step deep, but Harris snagged what could have been a deadly big play.

3rd down and 9, and the blitz by Rouse forced Orton to throw it right to Ryan Pickett, who knocked it down.

    9:39 p.m.  7:35  Packers' 1st Drive
Now it's time for Green Bay to stem the momentum tide as the drunk crazies with no shirts on party it up for the cameras.

    Nuts.

Starting at the 20 yard line with Driver back in the game...gusty...and Grant still has the momentum from the late first half.  Good six yard run.

Right off the bat, a 3rd and 1...barely, barely, Grant got to the first down on forward progress.

Jennings dropping one near the ground on 1st down and McCarthy is shaking his head, but I can't see if he's saying any non-G rated words or not with the TV camera angles.

(Parents, just call me your censor.)

Rodgers had to get rid of the ball because he was about to be accosted by three Bears defenders, and Lance Briggs makes Grant pay for catching the ball on a four-yard loss.

    Ryan, drop it next time.

3rd-14...Rodgers calls time out.  Then, Moll with his second false start of the day...Jiminy Christmas!  Stay with it, Moll!  How many 3rd and 19 plays are there?

Grant just gets a one-yard gain.

Now, momentum is deep on Lower Wacker Drive.

    9:26 p.m.  10:59  Bears' 1st Drive
    Green Bay 14, Chicago 10
    Orton-Olsen 7 yd TD pass
Hmm...the Bears forced into a 3rd and short, but the Bears haven't really gotten into the clear against the Packers' 4-2-5 defense with the run.

Michael Montgomery!  Huge sack on 3rd down!  That's double the sack total for the season so far for him in one game!

Oh no!   A Packers touched the ball on Maynard's punt.  Never mind the fact that Jarrett Bush was pushed into the ball...Jason Davis gets the ball for Chicago.

And the Bears look to now have life - a Desmond Clark 21-yard pickup on Tramon Williams' coverage.  The Bears took advantage of help that the Packers had no business giving them.

Goal to go, boys - gotta hold 'em.  First two downs, they listened...not 3rd down.  Olsen wide open.

    2nd Quarter

    9:06 p.m.  0:00   Packers' 3rd Drive
Fast drive to get seven more points?  Nope, go-to-the-locker room formation and let the boo birds rain down.

    9:04 p.m.  :44  Bears' 3rd Drive
Oh, the boo birds are out for Chicago, but they would be in Green Bay once they would see the Mason Crosby bounce-out-of-bounds kickoff.

The Bears start by taking advantage of soft coverage by Hester....easy catch, but it looks like the refs themselves are looking at the catch to see if it's right.  The replay guys may have an angle that says the ball bounced.  Boo hoo hoo, Chitown!

I think I actually saw Lovie Smith boo the result of the play as well.

INT and a drop by a Pro Bowler...Nick Collins!  Talk about a dagger before halftime if you get that and pick six it!

The pass to Desmond Clark, though, gets him just four yards and it's another shot for the Packers offense.

    8:56 p.m.  1:04  Packers' 2nd Drive
    Green Bay 14, Chicago 3
    Rodgers-Grant 17 yd pass
Allen Barbre with a great return for a lineman to get to the GB 42 yard line to start the drive...and the guy had all the enthusiasm of a 5th grader getting to run the football for the first time in his life during a flag football game.

WOW!  Driver with a sensational catch...hang on...incomplete.  And he had it, but it bounced out of his hands when he hit the ground.  He also looks hurt, and the training staff is going out.

If Driver's out, that really hurts us, and he can't even put any weight on his left leg.  Oh, that hurts.

He's crying as he comes to the sideline, and my guess is, it's more in frustration then physical pain, though it is huge.

3rd and 7 at the 45 of GB and it would be a waste if they can't get the first down with this pass protection...thankfully, James Jones takes in an 18-yard pass play!

Ryan Grant continues to lather up for his cold bath with a solid 12-yard gain as Rodgers comes to the sidelines for a two-minute warning conference and, hopefully for him, a gallon of hot chocolate.

Oh, love the keep pass....to Humphrey for a 15-yard gain.  Love the keep pass!

Rodgers was in the grasp on the next play when he got rid of the ball, but Humphrey was in the zip code....never mind.  Ineligible man downfield.  It still stunk.

Grant on the screen and FINALLY!  He breaks loose, thanks to a couple blocks with Spitz and Wells.  Best screen since the 1990's!

    8:41 p.m. 4:08  Bears' 2nd Drive
Daniel Manning got a seam on the kickoff return and dragged tacklers inside the Packers 30' yard line.  Peprah and Blackmon were riding him like a bull rider, but Manning isn't a bull.  Geez.

Talk about a momentum killer, and it's the often-soft kickoff coverage team that did nothing.

A first down throw put Chicago inside the 13...and what a great time for a sack by Michael Montgomery on 2nd down.

Thank you, Devin Hester, for being a volleyball player in training so that the pass that would have led to a touchdown was an INC instead.

    8:34 p.m.  6:21  Packers' 1st Drive
    Green Bay 7, Chicago 0
    Rodgers-Jennings 7 yd TD pass
Again, the Packers can't do anything right with Ryan Grant and the run, and they can't do anything wrong with the short pass when Rodgers doesn't get his pass tipped at the line.

AGAIN!  Rodgers with the slant to Driver in a five-inch slot where only Driver can catch it..  17 yard gain.

They'll need more of it with Ryan Grant getting nothing - seven yard on seven touches so far.

A 3rd and five and Rodgers has eons to throw!  Thanks, line, to help Rodgers and Jennings connect on a first down.

A 3rd and 2 at the CHI 37...aw, Corey Graham tipped away what was nearly a perfect pass.  Perhaps slightly underthrown on a play where he was barely beat.

Smart to have Kapinos punt instead of a 54-yarder in 5 degree temperature...HANG ON!   Matt Flynn gets the first down as the upback!

Chicago, you dummies!  You might want to pay attention to who's on the field!

Finally, Ryan Grant gets slightly warmed up with a six-yard run.  He said he warms up by running the football, but we'll need to see some big time RPM in this game.

He did it again...this time to the 13 yard line of Chicago out of the inverted wishbone.  Larry says the Bears have never seen that play.

3rd and 4 at the seven....TOUCHDOWN!  Perfect to Jennings, drilled into the front right part of the end zone.

    8:22 p.m. 13:58  Bears' 1st Drive
Jason Hunter with a no-gain "sack" on Orton to force a 4th down, and they take a delay of game to push the football back and give Maynard more of a chance to pin the Packers back.

Brad Maynard line-drived a punt to the nine yard line.  That's why they did the delay of game.

    1st Quarter

    8:17 p.m.  0:00  Bears' 3rd Drive
The Bears use Hester as a receiver and they match him up on A.J. Hawk.  Can you say monster mismatch?

    8:13 p.m.  2:05  Packers' 3rd Drive
Well, 10-minute discussions about replays mean a momentum swing, if there was any.  Of course, the Bears can force some momentum their way with a two-yard loss.

That went out the window with a 2nd-12 delivery from Rodgers to Nelson, then a 1st-10 delivery from Rodgers to Kuhn for 12 yards.

Grant is just not getting much, because up the middle, the Packers' O-line isn't getting much at all.

NO!  Rodgers had a pass tipped by Daniel Manning and Alex Brown INT'd it.

    8:02 p.m.  4:54  Bears' 2nd Drive
Chicago starts at their 35 yard line, and Green Bay forced a 3rd down 10.  Orton delivered a great throw to Brandon Lloyd, so good that Lloyd cowered down to the ground to avoid the throw!  We kid of course, as Lloyd just slipped.

Will Blackmon barely missed touching the football on the punt on 4th down, and the Bears actually carried the football in the end zone.  Barely a touchback.

    7:57 p.m.  6:44  Packers' 2nd Drive
A penalty for a block in the back sets Green Bay back...well whaddaya know, the same old story.  Starting at the 13 yard line.

Aaaagh...Rodgers just missed Driver wide open on the bomb that would have been a touchdown.

There's some YAC!  Ruvell Martin...a 15-yard play for a first down.  Yackety, YAC!  Don't go back to 14th in the league in the stat.

Oooof....Graham nearly INT'd Rodgers on a slight underthrow as he tried to thread the needle to Jennings.

Thankfully on 3rd down, Rodgers got rid of the ball as he got blitzed near the 18 yard line or it's a BIG loss.

    7:50 p.m.  9:46  Bears' 1st Drive
We see the Bears starting with their whole throw to the tight end philosophy, because they have killed the Packers with them in recent years.

Kampman and Hawk big on 3rd down to stuff Forte a yard short at the 24!  That's called stopping the run.

    7:47 p.m.
Already, Larry McCarren has the line of the day..."if he gets a fire in his rear end."  No further comment.

    7:46 p.m.  11:13  Packers' 1st Drive
A good Blackmon return of 32 yards got Green Bay in reasonable business, and they start off with a quick slant to Jennings.  I like that type of pass - nice and short in potentially windy conditions.

Tony Moll moving before the snap?  What is this, he saw icicle coming at him?  Geez.  Thanks, Rodgers, he needs to say for the throw to Driver to get the first down and bail him out.

They're really featuring the short pass for a couple reasons, to try to stretch out the defense and to get short 3rd downs, which are much more managable.  They're 6th in the league on 3rd down?  Why did they stink at it weeks ago?

Well, they stunk on it this down.

    Pregame

    7:38 p.m.
Green Bay calls tails on the coin flip to start the game and gets it.  They will start the game with the football.

    7:35 p.m.
The Bears are playing the Badgers "fourth quarter" song, "Jump Around," before the game begins.  Perhaps it's necessary to jump around the whole time to stay warm.

    7:31 p.m.
Atari Bigby, Korey Hall, Justin Harrell and Brandon Jackson are all out tonight.  For Chicago: just Jason McKie.

The Bears, or many of them, are sleveless in their jerseys.  I guarantee you, a lot of it is stuff they rub on their arms that keep them warm.

  • Is Haynesworth More than Peppers? Both Could Be Worth It to Packers

We have sat through the fourth straight loss the Packers have suffered through this month, and perhaps the most debilitating, because it cost Green Bay any shot at the playoffs.

Yes, all of you can go and blame Aaron Rodgers for not being Brett Favre and throwing three interceptions with no game-winning touchdowns in the final two minutes of games this year.

    Granted, that's true.

But folks, two of those came after the defense completely blew it, allowing a length-of-the-field drive, especially with 50+ yard bombs to receivers to set up touchdown runs.

You know what the key is to stopping drives like that?

How about having a defensive line that doesn't give the quarterback a chance to stand in the pocket and throw deep like that?

Which is why, in support of Bill Michaels' spouting off on Packers Gameday, I give two proposals to doing things that our own Wayne Larrivee and Bill Michaels both say are dangerous, because you overpay to get players like these in free agency?

One: DE Julius Peppers of the Carolina Panthers.

Two: DT Albert Haynesworth of the Tennessee Titans.

Peppers perhaps has more upside for Green Bay.

Part of it is the fact that perhaps Peppers give the greater improvement at a certain position.

So far this year, there's three sacks total from defensive ends whose names aren't Aaron Kampman.

Think of what another 10 sacks over that period of time might be.

Perhaps three games' outcome changed? That would more than make up for Rodgers not winning those contests due to late interceptions, because the defense wouldn't have put him in the hole.

On the other side, there's stopping the run.

The Packers were 27th in rushing entering Sunday's loss.

Having Albert Haynesworth next to Pepper, Cullen Jenkins and Aaron Kampman might not only allow for the line to no longer get gashed by Smash and Dash of Tennessee and Adrian Peterson of Minnesota, but perhaps we might not be screaming and ranting about no production by A.J. Hawk.

When he's not tied up by blockers, he can actually make plays.

It might not be the dramatic improvement that the pass rush with Peppers might be, however, because Cole and Pickett are, well, OK. Not great, but OK.

That, and Haynesworth can get fat with attitude (at least he has in the past) when his pocketbook gets fat.

    Will you overpay? Yes.

Is it worth it for Haynesworth or Peppers?

    For Julius "Caesar?" Absolutely.

    For Haynesworth? Very possibly.

Otherwise, if Ted Thompson doesn't enough moves in that vein through free agency and the draft, the Packers might continue to be Caesar salad on defense, and Aaron Rodgers will continue to have to bail the Packers out in late game situations.

And unless Rodgers turns into Brett Favre, Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana and John Elway in eight months, the Packers will probably continue to be the food for the Roman Lions in the Colosseum.

(No, not the Detroit Lions. They're not THAT bad)

  • Packers-Jaguars: The Playoff-Contention-Ending In-Game Blog

    4th Quarter

    3:03 p.m.  :40  Packers' 3rd Drive
All right, Aaron Rodgers, I prediced you'd get your first come-from-behind win today.   Let's do it, boys!

And of course, Will Blackmon doesn't get to the 20 yard line.

1:50 left, two time outs.  84 yard drive....and Rodgers on first down tried to thread the needle to Jennings - TRIPLE COVERED!  What are you doing, Aaron?  You're not Brett Favre.  Don't pull a Favre interception!

And, Brandon Jackson on 2nd down drops the football.

3rd and 10 in this seemingly supreme pain of the 4th quarter: YES!  A first down to Driver.  Even though he didn't get out of bounds, he got the first...worry about the sticks, then worry about the clock.

Jones for another first down with 1:04 left...just get the sticks.

3 straight completions and he doesn't reach the sidelines or the sticks, and Driver is limping.  That REALLY hurts.

Reggie Nelson with the interception at the 27 yard line on an overthrow of Donald Lee down the middle.  Game over.

Game, set, season, as Wayne would put it, and has in past season-ending plays.

    2:53 p.m.  1:56  Jaguars' 2nd Drive
    Jacksonville 20, Green Bay 16
    Jones-Drew 2 yd TD run (
    Puhleeze, defense.

Of course, the Jags get into the red zone, thanks to a 51-yard pass play to Northcutt.  The Packers got no pass rush at all.

3rd and 4 at the 18....Garrard FUMBLES...and, of course, he gets it back.  The ball went right back to him.

We're inside two minutes, and of course, they score.  Jones-Drew breaks right through a Chillar tackle.  No one else near Jones-Drew as well...but WAIT...it's a replay situation, and his knee WAS down before the end zone.

Part of me wants them to just give them the TD, though, because you know they're going to punch it in...and the Jags get the replay call.

Jags go for two and Jones-Drew gets denied.  Where was this defense last play, people?

    2:40 p.m.  8:31  Packers' 2nd Drive
    Green Bay 16, Jacksonville 14
    Mason Crosby 37 yd FG
Jones made his third catch on a bomb this afternoon!  And he beat Brian Williams, Andrea Mitchell, Robert Bazell and the entire NBC News team to get the ball!  (OK, just the Jags' Brian Williams.)

2nd and 3 at the 27: RYAN GRANT!   You were wide open and could have gone into the end zone, and you butterfinger the ball when it's thrown right into your hands.  AAAAGH!

Rodgers - heck of a scramble to angle past the first down marker!  Mobility gets him five yards and a first.

Now on the cusp of the red zone...oh no....fumble.  Tony Moll was Johnny on the spot, but he was souplexed lke the average designated tomato can for a WWF 80's era wrestler.

Smart call to get Donald Lee on a nine-yard gain to get into better field goal range.

    2:32 p.m.  10:39  Jaguars' 1st Drive
    Jaguars 14, Packers 13
    Garrard-Jones-Drew 14 yd TD pass
A.J. HAWK!   Where have you been!  A huge sack on a 3rd and 18....and it's MONSTROUS because Northcutt caught a 17-yard completion, just short of the 1st down, on 3rd down.

So, of course, they'll go for it on 4th down, and they get it on a run, making the Hawk sack mean nothing.

Larry makes a great point as the Jags throw the ball into the red zone - the Jags have barely run the football.  They're gashing Green Bay with the aerial ame, not the run.

And a short pass to Jones-Drew gives the lead to Jacksonville.

    2:22 p.m.  14:54  Packers' 1st Drive
4th and short and it must be just an entire team thing, because John Kuhn got stuffed on 4th down.  Like he did twice last week vs. Houston.

    Ugh.

    3rd Quarter

    2:22 p.m.  0:00  Packers' 3rd Drive
Greg Jennings got wide open on 1st down but Rodgers missed him - just missed him.

2nd and 1 and Ryan Grant couldn't get a first down - again.  He does well on normal down, but he just isn't producing today on short yardage.

3rd and 1, and again, he's stuffed!  Clint Ingram got him.  Frustration, folks.  It makes me think the Packers need a short-yardage specialist in this situation.

    2:12 p.m.  2:40  Jaguars' 2nd Drive
Maurice Jones-Drew only gets 2.8 yards per carry so far today.  As I type that, Jones-Drew ran off tackle for 7 yards, and if Tramon Williams doesn't pull off an ankle tackle, it's a 97-yard TD run.

Nice job after that to force the Jags to go three-and-out.

    2:02 p.m.  5:01  Packers' 2nd Drive
SCREEEEEEEEEEN!  Ryan Grant levels a couple guys to smash for a 12-yard gain and a first down.  (I just love yelling SCREEEEEEEN! like we did in high school ball when the other team was throwing a screen pass.)

Brandon Jackson with some shifty Fred Astaire moves to get to the cusp of a first down and a much-easier 3rd down and 1, and Rodgers takes the Bart Starr-Jerry Kramer playbook for a sneak and a first down - about the 3,914,027,983th sneak for a first down this year.

Maybe Jackson should have gone for the first down on 2nd and 1 instead of Grant, because he just didn't have the burst of speed you needed to get a first down.

Hmm...3rd and 2 and Rodgers missed an open Jennings because Clint Ingram was in his shoulder pads, and in fact Rodgers was hit when he threw it.

    1:55 p.m.  9:18  Jaguars' 1st Drive
It is nowhere near good when Garrard can find Northcutt deep on a bomb.  It is REALLY bad when you have Al Harris and Brady Poppinga standing there arguing who was covering whom at the end of the play.  No one has an idea on this defense!!!

Still, they stop them near midfield....and a good bounce for the Packers lets a great punt get into the end zone.  Phew.

    1:48 p.m. 12:51  Packers' 1st Drive
The first five minutes of the second half are the most important minutes of the game...and the first set of downs lead to - who'd have thunk it - a third and five.  Momentum swing time if they fail, and they don't - Driver with a great catch as Brian Williams comes off the anchor desk to anchor him to the ground on a 13-yard gain.

1st down and Rodgers was scrambling to throw, not scrambling to run, and he was waiting to get rid of the ball, and he missed a chance to gain yards.  I like the movement to wait to throw, but that time, he needs to decide to go after it himself.

3rd and 8: Rodgers is sacked inside the 30 yard line.  Call that a coverage sack as nobody got open.

    2nd Quarter

    1:29 p.m.  0:00  Packers' 3rd Drive
Rodgers sacked after a pump fake as Reggie Hayward got in to sack him, and the half ends with a thud.

    1:27 p.m.  1:28  Jaguars' 3rd Drive
"Do you want a ride in my" Mercedes "boy" Lewis must have the receiving skill of Pebbles, as he dropped an easy third down pass.

    1:23 p.m.  1:18  Packers' 2nd Drive
    Green Bay 13, Jacksonville 7
    Mason Crosby 23 yd FG
Awesome start to the drive, Driver, with a 24-yard catch, but in 3rd and four...GREAT CATCH by Jones, juggling it, and he held on inside the 13 yard line.

Oh hang on, the referees are chatting about their dinner plans and they make the ref do all the work to see on a replay....and I don't know.  To me, ti's a judgment call as to whether he had possession when his feet were down.

They gave it to him - THANK YOU refs.  Go get some five-star steaks tonight for dinner.

Jones got his bell rung and had to walk off the field, but he did it on his own power.

3rd and goal and they tried a tight end screen pass, and John Henderson found Donald Lee in the backfield.  Ugly play call - why not throw to the end zone???

    Crosby FG - perfect.

    1:07 p.m.  4:12  Jaguars' 2nd Drive
The Jags forced into a 3rd and 14 at the JAX 47, but after that 3rd and 19 TD, I'm scared...and Northcutt was wide open, beating Nick Collins, but someone fed him Yancey Thigpen butterfingers and he dropped the ball.

    12:55 p.m.  8:33  Packers' 1st Drive
    Green Bay 10, Jacksonville 7
    Rodgers-Jennings 4 yd TD pass
They're using Ryan Grant on a few plays to get him a bit of a lather.  Awesome use of the play fake with the run to Grant for a first down.

Rodgers got roughed up by LB Clint Ingram for a 15-yard penalty, and there was more than a smattering of clap in Lambeau South...I mean whatever corporate name they gave the Gator Bowl stadium.

3rd and 9 at the 22 1/2 yard line: NICE first down to the 11 with Jennings, and he beat Tom Brokaw's replacement.  "See ya tomorrow night."

3rd and 3 1/2 for a first down, 4 1/2 to the end zone: TOUCHDOWN on a perfect comeback pattern, but Jennings pushed off to get separation...oh, they didn't call it!  THANK YOU Mr. Referee!  Jack Del Rio just uttered a George Carlin word on the sideline!  Don't look, kids!

    12:38 p.m.  14:40  Jaguars' 1st Drive (continued from 1st quarter)
A nice 3rd down stop, but a great spot for a 4th down play...hang on...the receiver only had one foot in bounds...that means a 51-yard field goal attempt for Josh Scobee....SCHTOINK!!!!!!!!    Off the upright.

    1st Quarter

    12:35 p.m.  0:00  Jaguars' 2nd Drive
Man, on 2nd and 4 near midfield, Jacksonville had the tight end wide open!  The gator in the nearby swamp was the nearest defender.

    12:25 p.m.  2:33  Packers' 1st Drive
    Jacksonville 7, Green Bay 3
    Mason Crosby 22 yd FG
Geez, the game basically starts on a 3rd and 10.  That stinks...and Rodgers DOESN'T STINK!  Great throw to Jones into Jacksonville territory, but like Wayne said, Rodgers got the play to happen because of his feet.

Mr. Referee!  Brian Williams, Tom Brokaw's replacement, bumped James Jones to the ground as the ball was in the air, and the refs say no call!  Incidental?  That's the fleecing of America!

Rodgers through the eye of the needle on a quick slant for a first down...heck of an accurate throw when it had to be....again, on third down.

That's twice as many in 10 minutes as the Packers had last week against Houston!

SCREEN!  Grant for 15 yards...looked like Dorsey Levens there, circa 1996.

A third down and goal from the 5...and they had to go with a screen to Jackson for a one-yard gain because Rodgers was going to get eaten up for a sack.  Wideouts, you've got to get open.

    Field goal, though, is good.

    12:15 p.m.  8:03  Jaguars' 1st Drive
    Jacksonville 7, Green Bay 0
    Garrard-Northcutt 30 yd TD pass
First play - our linebackers stink it up off the bat, unable to cover Reggie Williams out of the backfield on a 13-yard gain.  Then a reverse for nine yards...lots of trickeration on Jacksonville's part.

Way to work off a block and stone a running back, Charles Woodson!  Can you do it on 3rd down?  Uh, nope.

Nice job Brandon Chillar, guarding Jones-Drew on the first pass play he had to defend.  We've missed his pass coverage the last couple weeks.

Lance Allan warned of this - David Garrard able to run for a first down.  Larry had a great comment, saying he has a "thick lower half."  (No more information needed, Larry.)

3rd and two's are not good friends of defenses, because guys like Washington can do not-a-lot and get the first down inside the 25 yard line.

I'm disappointed that Jack Del Rio is not wearing the suit today, but I'm not disappointed with holding penalties to send Jacksonville back 10 yards.

I'm really disappointed that no one decided to cover Dennis Northcutt on a 3rd and 19 play where even getting close to a 1st down shouldn't happen.

    Pregame

12:01 p.m.  As the flyover happened, the Packers won the toss but deferred to the 2nd half, and the Jaguars will take the football.

11:59 a.m.  Before we start the game, let's congratulate 620WTMJ/Packers Radio Network intern T.J. Thurman for graduating from Marquette University!  He's taking a well-deserved day off from the network to get his diploma and scurry away from a report of a fire at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

  • Get Your January Plans Set; The Packers Have None for That Month

So what are your plans for January 3rd and 4th?

    Mine?

Let's see. Saturday, Jan. 3, I know I have to work my other job.

Sunday, Jan. 4 is the Marquette-Cincinnati game, and I've got tickets for that.

    Am I free those days?

Barring a miracle collapse that would make Josh McCown-to-Nate Poole seem like everyday commonplace happenings, yes.

    Why?

Because, as the Packers' offensive line and complete defense proved again, the Packers can't close out games.

The last three-or-so minutes proved to be one of the most painful experiences I've ever had in watching a late-game experience, with two different opportunities to take control of the game destroyed by mistake after mistake.

    The litany today?

    3:02 left, 4th quarter
After the Packers got a 58-yard catch and run from Donald Driver after a perfect delivery by Aaron Rodgers (who, in a game where he had a 104 passer rating, can only be blamed for something Brett Favre did often in early stretches of games - overthrow receivers), the Packers' offensive line blew what would have been a go-ahead drive.

Tony Moll committed a holding call that wiped out a Ryan Grant run that got the Packers 13 yards from victory.

    2:56 left, 4th quarter
Then he and the rest of the Packers' offensive line blew it in allowing Aaron Rodgers to get sacked and out of field goal range.

    2:00 left, 4th quarter
Jeremy Kapinos does what Derrick Frost couldn't do so many times this year, and get a key punt deep in Texans territory...the three yard line.

So normally, you'd think the Packers would be in perfect position to force the Texans into overtime.

Uh, Houston, who had gashed Green Bay all day long, had other ideas - like slitting their throat.

    1:43 left, 4th quarter
Apparently the Packers' linebackers chose to not pay much attention to former teammate Vonta Leach. He took a short pass to go 22 yards to the Houston 28, and out of a huge hole.

    :50 left, 4th quarter
Apparently the entire Packers defense chose not to watch Houston tight end Owen Daniels either when he was at Wisconsin, or in game preparation. As I blogged earlier, I was the closest potential Packers defender to him, and I'm sitting in a radio studio in Milwaukee.

Result: 27-yard gain to Kris Brown's wheelhouse, the Green Bay 25.

    :00 left, 4th quarter
Three plays later, Brown put a stake in the Packers' postseason hopes with a 40 yard field goal.

All day long, the Packers' pass defense was non-existent. 414 yards for Matt Schaub and company? Puhleeze!!!

All season long, the Packers neglected to do what was necessary in late-game moments to hold teams in critical stretches.

In the five losses where they lost by 14 points or less:

Oct. 5 vs. Atlanta: Down 20-17, Aaron Rodgers threw an interception with 4:42 left to set Atlanta up at the Green Bay 19, where Atlanta punched it in with three plays.

Nov. 2 at Tennessee: Up 16-13 with 1:49 left, the Packers let the Tennessee Titans drive 63 yards to kick a tying field goal. Then, on the first drive of overtime, they let the Titans run the ball down their throat for the most of a 55-yard drive to end the Packers' hopes of beating the then-undefeated Titans.

Nov. 9 at Minnesota: Up 27-21 with 5:56 left, the Vikings went 69 yards on seven plays, the last of which was a 29-yard run by Adrian Peterson.

Nov. 30 vs. Carolina: Up 31-28 with 1:57 left, the Panthers went 55 yards (set up by bad kickoff coverage to allow a 45 yard return) in two plays, the first of which was a 54 yard bomb to Steve Smith, the second a DeAngelo Williams 1 yard touchdown run.

Dec. 7 vs. Houston: a 75 yard drive for a touchdown in the last two minutes to set up the game-winning field goal.

Five losses. One of which was a quarterback's fault in the late going.

Four of these losses came to the fault of the defense in the late going.

In fact, Rodgers could be commended for solid late-game leadership in the last two.

Folks, get the blame game going, and more than any other reason, get it on the defensive side of the ball.

And make your plans for the first weekend in January.  Maybe, you can fly out of the cold with the cheap airline fares now out there and head to a warmer climate.

If so, send the Packers' defense (and this week, the offensive line, too) the bill.
