Is Haynesworth More than Peppers? Both Could Be Worth It to Packers

We have sat through the fourth straight loss the Packers have suffered through this month, and perhaps the most debilitating, because it cost Green Bay any shot at the playoffs.

Yes, all of you can go and blame Aaron Rodgers for not being Brett Favre and throwing three interceptions with no game-winning touchdowns in the final two minutes of games this year.

Granted, that's true.

But folks, two of those came after the defense completely blew it, allowing a length-of-the-field drive, especially with 50+ yard bombs to receivers to set up touchdown runs.

You know what the key is to stopping drives like that?

How about having a defensive line that doesn't give the quarterback a chance to stand in the pocket and throw deep like that?

Which is why, in support of Bill Michaels' spouting off on Packers Gameday, I give two proposals to doing things that our own Wayne Larrivee and Bill Michaels both say are dangerous, because you overpay to get players like these in free agency?

One: DE Julius Peppers of the Carolina Panthers.

Two: DT Albert Haynesworth of the Tennessee Titans.

Peppers perhaps has more upside for Green Bay.

Part of it is the fact that perhaps Peppers give the greater improvement at a certain position.

So far this year, there's three sacks total from defensive ends whose names aren't Aaron Kampman.

Think of what another 10 sacks over that period of time might be.

Perhaps three games' outcome changed? That would more than make up for Rodgers not winning those contests due to late interceptions, because the defense wouldn't have put him in the hole.

On the other side, there's stopping the run.

The Packers were 27th in rushing entering Sunday's loss.

Having Albert Haynesworth next to Pepper, Cullen Jenkins and Aaron Kampman might not only allow for the line to no longer get gashed by Smash and Dash of Tennessee and Adrian Peterson of Minnesota, but perhaps we might not be screaming and ranting about no production by A.J. Hawk.

When he's not tied up by blockers, he can actually make plays.

It might not be the dramatic improvement that the pass rush with Peppers might be, however, because Cole and Pickett are, well, OK. Not great, but OK.

That, and Haynesworth can get fat with attitude (at least he has in the past) when his pocketbook gets fat.

Will you overpay? Yes.

Is it worth it for Haynesworth or Peppers?

For Julius "Caesar?" Absolutely.

For Haynesworth? Very possibly.

Otherwise, if Ted Thompson doesn't enough moves in that vein through free agency and the draft, the Packers might continue to be Caesar salad on defense, and Aaron Rodgers will continue to have to bail the Packers out in late game situations.

And unless Rodgers turns into Brett Favre, Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana and John Elway in eight months, the Packers will probably continue to be the food for the Roman Lions in the Colosseum.

(No, not the Detroit Lions. They're not THAT bad)

This is what needs to be done on defense:

1. Take a cue from Scary uncle Teddy and do nothing to improve the d-line.

2. If there is between 3 and 5 minutes left on the game clock, it's the fourth quarter, and the pack is defending at the opponent's 20 (so they have 80 or so yards of space from the goal line), stand aside and let the opponents score with ONE play.

3. When Aaron gets on the field, he will have MORE than two minutes to march down and get a score.

4. Ignore McCarthy/Holmgren/Sherman play calling (in other words, run, run, pass, punt.)

Ya gotta pay to play! Spend the cash get both of them. Two quality players that can help cover up for some "iffy" linebackers.

Now what about the porous offensive line.....

Then use the free agent market to add to the offensive line and a linebacker prospect.  That makes sense to me.  I think Bigby's problems are injuries so hopefully he comes back strong next year.

Did the Packers turn into the Marlins, Brewers, or Pirates that we are in so much trouble with money?  Thompson seems to be hording it under the guise of his principal of younger is better?  How is that working this year?

Ted it getting paid to evaluate talent and make the team better, not live by his principals.  I think about Ron Wolf who was willing to take the chance and sign Seth Joyner, Sean Jones, Reggie White and Andre Rison before the team was able to make it to the Super Bowl.  The idea is not to make stupid moves, but shrewd moves are ok, look at the shrewd move of trading for Favre so many years ago.  Even Sherman when he was GM made some blunders, but he was willing to take the shot to make the team better.

How has the team gotten better over the summer and fall, trading away Williiams (a needed D lineman), cutting KGB (while not a force anymore, people still had to look for him) and the whole Favre thing.  Come on, for Pete's sake maybe Seattle was doing itself a favor getting rid of Thompson.  Kgb may have been a step or two slow, but now the whole defense is 4 or 5 steps away.  Gerrard was able to pitch a tent and wait for someone to get open.

If Thompson doesn't spend money on some talent this summer to make the team better, we know that he is no better at judging talent than Matt Millen.  He is a man that will live by his principles and that will do the Packers no good for a long, long time.

What team doesn't want Haynesworth? Rather than bidding high for him, I'd rather not go for a guy who was pretty nondescript until he was looking at free agency.
