  • Realistic free agent options

Just a few days ago I compiled a list of free agents the Green Bay Packers might be interested in based upon writings from respected Packers beat writers Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal.

Since that time Silverstein has added a few more names. In a blog post over at jsonline.com, he even wrote, “I will offer up three names of players I know they like and could very well end up signing.”

Among them are Texas safety C.C. Brown, Cowboys tight end Tony Curtis, and Vikings linebacker Napoleon Harris. How exactly Silverstein knows the Packers like these players I don’t know, but I’ll take his word for it.

In addition, Silverstein even added a couple more names in an article appearing in the Journal Sentinel.

Among the biggest news coming out of 1265 Lombardi Ave. is that the team has inquired after defensive end Chris Canty, one of the biggest names remaining after the opening day spending spree.

Of course, that doesn’t guarantee the Packers are going to get him. It looks like the odds of landing Canty are longer than most expect.

“But if the Packers, who would like Canty to visit early next week, even stand a chance at signing the 26-year-old, he'll have to be unimpressed with his first two scheduled visits -- the New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks,” writes the Journal Sentinel’s Greg Bedard. “In this day of free agency, big-name players rarely get past their first visit or two because agents fear the big money dries up after the first weekend.”

Here’s our updated list of the Packers’ potential free agent targets:

  • DE Ronald Fields - 49ers
  • S James Sanders - Patriots
  • DE Mike Wright - Patriots
  • LB Pierre Woods - Patriots
  • LB Andra Davis - Browns
  • LB Mike Peterson - Jaguars
  • LB Andre Frazier - Steelers
  • DE Chris Canty - Cowboys
  • S C.C. Brown - Texans
  • TE Tony Curtis - Cowboys
  • LB Napoleon Harris - Vikings
  • LB Clark Haggans - Cardinals
  • LB Marques Harris - Chargers
  • LB Angelo Crowell - Bills
  • LB Kevin Burnett - Cowboys
  • DL Antonio Smith - Cardinals
  • DT Tank Johnson - Cowboys
  • DE Igor Olshansky - Chargers
  • S Sean Jones - Browns
  • S Jim Leonhard - Ravens
  • RB Derrick Ward - Giants
  • Packers spotted at FAU pro day

With the NFL Scouting Combine now over, it’s time for over a month of pro day workouts to commence.

The Green Bay Packers were in attendance at the very first pro day workout at Florida Atlantic University according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

The biggest name people were watching was inside linebacker Frantz Joseph who was probably the biggest snub after not being invited to the Combine.

Joseph put up very average numbers, but I, of course, don’t put much stock into 40-times and three cone shuttles. Performance on the football field is where it’s at and Joesph has done it.

The hard hitting linebacker was defensive player of the game of this past season’s Motor City Bowl and then again in the Texas vs. the Nation all-star game.

This former Owl could be a steal for some team in the middle rounds of the draft, and I’m not the only one who thinks so.

"I don't just think he'll be drafted, but could be a Pro Bowl guy," professional trainer Brian Martin told the Palm Beach Post.

Of course, Martin is biased seeing as Joseph is one of his clients, but the evauators over at Draftguys.com also use the words “Pro Bowl” in association with Joseph’s name (head over to draftguys.com for a great video analysis and highlights of Joseph).

Other performers that stick out include Carldayle Brantley and running back Charles Pierre.

DraftDaddy.com said, “The performance by Carldayle Brantley certainly jumps out at us. He only collected 35 tackles his first three years at F.I.U., but recorded 44 tackles, with 3 interceptions, last season. He's a likely free agent type, we'd guess.”

I personally like Pierre and think he could be a great free agent type running back. I believe Pierre was a big reason FAU has won back to back bowl games and head coach Howard Schnellenberger is undefeated in bowl games.

  • Barden thinks Packers are interested

Ramses Barden is one of the more intriguing prospects in this year’s NFL draft class, and he thinks the Packers are interested in him.

Barden told the Sporting News after the Combine, “Obviously it's hard to say who's really got their eye on you, and guys are always speculating, but I thought the Giants, Packers and Dolphins also showed some interest. No matter what, I feel a little more comfortable after the weekend. I'm not scared going into these next couple of months.”

Barden played at FCS school Cal Poly but is being held in the same regard as the big school players after being invited to both the Senior Bowl and the Combine.

He’s not going to kill anyone with his speed, but is being looked at as a big, possession receiver while standing at 6-6 and 228 pounds. Similarities to current Packers receiver Ruvell Martin are appropriate.

Barden is being considered a third round choice by TFY Draft.

  • Packers show interest in USC linebacker

The Green Bay Packers have yet to show any activity on the first day of free agency, so here's some draft news.

The Packers met with USC linebacker Kaluka Maiava while at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis last week according to College Football Insiders.

Maiava was one of four USC linebackers to be invited to the Combine. His teammates Brian Cushing, Clay Matthews and Rey Maualuga could all be first round draft choices.

Maiava might not be a first round prospect, but his stock does seem to be rising.

"His 30 repetitions in the 225-pound bench press tied him with two others, including All-American teammate Brian Cushing, for the most among linebackers;" reports Robert Collias for the Maui News (Maiava is from Maui), "his time of 6.98 seconds in the three-cone drill tied for fourth among linebackers; and his time of 4.20 seconds in the 20-yard shuttle was third."

Maiva has sugically repaired wrists, according to the article, but he also has a couple things going in his favor. He was named defensive player of the game for this past year's Rose Bowl.

He was also named second team All-Pac 10 last season, his first as a starter. Not bad considering he had to compete with three teammates for all-conference honors.

  • Free agent names to watch

With names like Julius Peppers and Nnamadi Asomugha already taken off the free agent market, the remaining names have significantly less sex appeal.

Although, that's not to say there's not a few hidden gems or diamonds in the rough that the Green Bay Packers might target in free agency.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Tom Silverstein writes for the Sporting News Today, and in yesterday's edition (it's free, but you need to sign up) he listed the Packers' top five free agent targets.

Making the list are Colin Cole and Mark Tauscher, two holdovers the Packers will likely make an attempt to re-sign.

Baltimore's Bart Scott makes the list, but Silverstein doesn't have much hope that the Packers would be able to sign him.

"Scott could fill a key position in the 3-4, though it's unlikely the team will be able to persuade him to relocate to Green Bay," writes Silverstein.

And perhaps most intriguing are the players listed as targets number two and three on the list: 49ers defensive end Ronald Fields and Patriots safety James Sanders.

"Fields is a good fit as a 3-4 end, where his run stopping ability could be best utilized," reports Silverstein. "The Patriots' Mike Wright is another run-stopping possibility."

Silverstein also mentions safeties Brian Dawkins (Eagles) and Yeremiah Bell (Dolphins) as possibilities.

The Wisconsin State Journal's Jason Wilde also chimes in with a couple of intriguing free agent prospects including some restricted free agents.

Here's the list of names compiled by Silverstein and Wilde to keep an eye on:

    • Ronald Fields - 49ers
    • James Sanders - Patriots
    • Mike Wright - Patriots
    • Brian Dawkins - Eagles
    • Yeremiah Bell - Dolphins
    • Bart Scott - Ravens
    • Pierre Woods - Patriots
    • Andra Davis - Browns
    • Mike Peterson - Jaguars
    • Andre Frazier - Steelers
    • Chris Canty - Cowboys
