Realistic free agent options

Just a few days ago I compiled a list of free agents the Green Bay Packers might be interested in based upon writings from respected Packers beat writers Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal.

Since that time Silverstein has added a few more names. In a blog post over at jsonline.com, he even wrote, “I will offer up three names of players I know they like and could very well end up signing.”

Among them are Texas safety C.C. Brown, Cowboys tight end Tony Curtis, and Vikings linebacker Napoleon Harris. How exactly Silverstein knows the Packers like these players I don’t know, but I’ll take his word for it.

In addition, Silverstein even added a couple more names in an article appearing in the Journal Sentinel.

Among the biggest news coming out of 1265 Lombardi Ave. is that the team has inquired after defensive end Chris Canty, one of the biggest names remaining after the opening day spending spree.

Of course, that doesn’t guarantee the Packers are going to get him. It looks like the odds of landing Canty are longer than most expect.

“But if the Packers, who would like Canty to visit early next week, even stand a chance at signing the 26-year-old, he'll have to be unimpressed with his first two scheduled visits -- the New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks,” writes the Journal Sentinel’s Greg Bedard. “In this day of free agency, big-name players rarely get past their first visit or two because agents fear the big money dries up after the first weekend.”

Here’s our updated list of the Packers’ potential free agent targets:

    About This Blog

This is the place for those of you who can't get enough Green Bay Packers news! Updates will be provided frequently from the view of a "railbird." We go to the practices and scan the local media so you don't have to.

Milwaukee Magazine says, "Insightful and newsy, Brian Carriveau’s work could be mistaken for beat reporting instead of blogging. His coverage of the team’s practices is virtually unprecedented."
