Let's do the right thing.

Hey Ted, Since I know you're a constant reader here at Railbird, I wanted to do 2 things. First, congrats on the draft. It was one of your more impressive ones. You're getting praise all-over the internet, and you've even managed to grab Mel Kiper's top grade. That's great. And second, now that you're on top of the football world, riding high on a wave of positive momentum, I want to suggest something to you: Let's sign a high-profile free agent. It won't cost us anything, and the rift you can repair would be a big step in healing the wounds. Ted, I implore you. Be the big man. Reach your arms over the half-way line and sign Brett.

Talk to his agent. Sign him for a day so he can officially go out as a Packer. It'll be the highest-profile agent you can sign in the off-season and it won't cost anything, except a small swallow of pride.

You forgot that it would take Brett swallowing a small amount of his pride to get this done too.

Oh, believe me. I'm not one to fault Ted for the whole mess. Hence my comment, "Be the big man." I think with his popularity at an all-time high, Ted can repair his image with this gesture and if Brett doesn't want to, Ted can at least say he tried.

Plus, Bus Cook just threw a huge hint in the most recent article on his release, "Cook said he originally asked the Jets to release Favre after the season as just 'the order of business. Brett wants to retire as a Packer and that's just part of it'" according to ESPN.

I don't want to sign Favre to a one day contract. Partly because I hate Favre, but partly because how embarrassing would it be to do this and then have Favre un-retire from the Packers again? I say wait it out at least a year, let him go to the Vikings if he needs to, whatever. He sucks now anyway. But wait for him to be out of football for a year before doing this.

I think that by picking him up now, we assure a) that he really wants to retire and that we want him to retire as a Packer (also that there are no hard feelings) and b) that if he changes his mind again, that we can release him right away so he can sign with whoever he wants. That way, it looks like the Pack is trying to do the right thing by him and that we're fully committed to Aaron. Not a lot to lose for the Pack.

And yeah, he made some mistakes last year, but try to remember what this guy gave to our organization. 1 bad year cannot erase 19 good ones.

About Dan Haddinger

I am a Wisconsin guy, transplanted into AR. I have lived among the enemy for 10 years (in MN) and have gotten a certain amount of humor and insight on how other teams see the Pack and how we see them. I am a writer by trade, a family man by choice, and a Packer fan by birth.

About This Blog

This is the place for those of you who can't get enough Green Bay Packers news! Updates will be provided frequently from the view of a "railbird." We go to the practices and scan the local media so you don't have to.

Milwaukee Magazine says, "Insightful and newsy, Brian Carriveau’s work could be mistaken for beat reporting instead of blogging. His coverage of the team’s practices is virtually unprecedented."
