While converting linebacker Spencer Havner into a two-way player, it's possible that the Green Bay Packers could only keep two tight ends on their roster this season. Of course, they'd really be keeping three, but Havner would be considered the third.
Donald Lee and Jermichael Finley seem assured of roster spots this upcoming season barring injury. But none of the four backup tight ends currently on the roster are guaranteed of sticking around in August.
Last year's no. 3 tight end Tory Humphrey is in danger of losing his place on the team. The Packers kept him around for three mostly injury-plagued seasons based upon his potential. After finally getting through the 2008 season injury free, Humphrey showed little play making ability.
The three other tight ends currently on the roster -- Evan Moore, Carson Butler and Devin Frischknecht -- are a combination of rookie and first year players that would have to show something special to be kept on the 53-man roster.
Perhaps more importantly, the Packers third tight end, whoever it may be, is going to have to prove their worth on special teams. Last season, Humphrey played on special teams but didn't seem particularly adept at it.
That's where Havner steps in. Through mini-camp and OTAs, the Packers appear to be doing everything in their power to create a spot for Havner on their 53-man roster. He's been practicing with the first-string on most special teams units throughout the off-season, and that's a good sign for him.
If he can fill the role of the team's third tight end, and be more of a blocking threat than a receiving threat, there's no reason to think the Packers need to keep a third tight end on their roster. With the receiving corps the Packers have, why would they? They have all the offensive firepower they need from their wideouts.
It's even possible that the Packers could keep six wide receivers on their roster this season. The "Big Five" are back from last season, plus guys like Brett Swain are having very productive off-seasons making it hard for the Packers to keep him off their roster. Undrafted rookies like Kole Heckendorf and Jarmarko Simmons are stating thier cases too.
With offensive weapons like that, the Packers could do without an extra tight end. In addition to Lee and Finley, they'll have Havner providing depth and insurance. Plus the fullbacks in Mike McCarthy's system are trained to be very versatile, in which many times they can fill an H-back role.
And as a backup plan, the Packers can keep one of the rookies or first year players on the practice squad in case of injury.
