The Packers lost but maybe the bigger story is the injuries sustained to several players, notably first round draft pick B.J. Raji. "Coach Mike McCarthy said after the game he had no reason to believe the
injury is serious," reports Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, "but Raji did walk out of the locker room with a
pronounced limp, and his status is in doubt for next week’s
regular-season opener against Chicago." Raji's status really throws a monkey wrench into how the 53-man roster plays out and how it affects the defensive line. Raji's injury probably isn't season threatening, but maybe he's out for a week or two. If so, there goes any bit of hope the Packers had of keeping Justin Harrell on the roster. Keep an eye on this situation closely.
Brian Brohm looked good but far from great in his preseason finale. "He completed 20 of 28 passes for 154 yards and no touchdown or
interceptions," writes Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "His passer rating was a respectable 84.5, mostly on the
strength of his 71.4% completion rate, but the modest 5.5 yards per
attempt reflected the short passes he threw." The biggest plus was no turnovers. But he hasn't thrown for a touchdown pass the entire preseason, and those short passes are a reason for concern.
The Packers are reportedly trying to trade several players. "Several league personnel sources said that among the players the Packers have been shopping are tackle Tony Moll and safeties Charlie Peprah and Aaron Rouse," according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "All three would be candidates to be released when the Packers have to trim their roster from 75 to 53." If the Packers can get anything in return for those players, more power to them. If I were another NFL team, I wouldn't trade for them when I could just pick them up on the waiver wire. Scott Wells is a different story.
Nick Barnett and Clay Matthews both saw their first action of the entire '09 season last night. "More importantly, Barnett reported no problems with his surgically
repaired knee and declared himself ready for the Sept. 13 season opener
against Chicago," writes Mike Spofford of the Packers official website. Barnett looked fine, but he played so sparingly that it's hard to make any sort of conclusions on his play. Matthews, on the other hand, showed very little. However, it was jus the preseason.
What happened in the secondary last night? "Defensive backs Brandon Underwood (shoulder stinger), Pat Lee (knee) and Anthony Smith
(blow to the head) all exited as well," writes Spofford. "That forced the Packers to go
with a makeshift secondary in the second half, as Swain switched sides
of the ball and played some cornerback, while corner Joe Porter moved over to safety." If you didn't stay up to watch, Trevor Ford also had to leave the field for the last minute of the game, and he was replaced by Jake Allen. Yup. The cornerback tandem on the field for the final minute (albeit including a kneeldown by the Titans) consisted of Swain and Allen.
Fans got really excited after a 3-0 start, but the loss brings us back to reality as Bart Winkler of the Bucky Channel reminds us. "After the display the Packers put on for the first three weeks of the
season, I could not be more excited for the real games to get underway," writes Winkler.
"Thursday night's game against the Titans was just a formality, as the
Pack lost 27-10. Oh well, it's only preseason, as I've been saying all
along."
"Joe Philbin, the Packers’ offensive coordinator, called plays Thursday
night, apparently because McCarthy wanted to watch the players more
closely to help make decisions on final cuts," reports Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Philbin said he called
plays at least once before, against Tennessee in the exhibition season
two years ago. He was unsure whether he’d called plays in an exhibition
game last season."
Jordy Nelson looked good last night. "He completed a strong preseason with three catches for 50 yards in the
first half against the Titans," writes Rob Demovsky of the Press-Gazette. "He showed his catch-and-run ability when
he turned a short crossing route from Brian Brohm into a 33-yard gain."
