Memo to Packers: Use DeShawn Wynn

If there was ever a time for DeShawn Wynn to get an opportunity to prove himself, the beginning of the '09 season seemed like an opportune time. Incumbent No. 2 tailback Brandon Jackson has been out with an injury, and the Packers cut Wynn's primary competition from training camp when they released Kregg Lumpkin and Tyrell Sutton.

But so far Wynn has gotten four carries all season long. It's not like Ryan Grant has been tearing up the joint either. Grant hasn't done poorly, but 3.7 yards per carry on 56 rushes isn't Adrian Peterson-like production.

So what would hurt with Wynn getting a couple more carries to prove himself? Heck, Grant could use a breather once in a while.

There's been speculation that there's people within the Packers' organization that want to see Grant play after signing a large contract a season ago. If that's true, it's a shame. First of all, Grant doesn't deserve nearly 90 percent of the carries. Second, the Packers are only hurting themselves by giving him so many.

It seems as if ever since the Packers cut Wynn following training camp in '08, he's had a bit of a wakeup call. Once they signed him back and the '08 season wore on, Wynn improved nearly every week. He capped off the year with an over 100-yard effort in the season's final game.

Now, even with Jackson hurt, Wynn is seeing minimal playing time while the running game is stagnating. Maybe he's not a superstar, but it's time to give him some carries.

And if Wynn really isn't deserving of playing time, it's a shame they had to cut someone with promise like Tyrell Sutton to make room for Wynn. Sutton easily could be doing what Wynn is doing for the Packers right now, which is next to nothing anyways.

While I agree in general with this, I don't agree that 3.7 yards per carry is acceptable. That puts Grant at 103rd in the league in average - granted, that is with no minimum in attempts, but look at the guys who have a better ypc. Lendale White, Jamal Lewis, Joseph Addai, Clinton Portis, Knoshown Moreno, Jonathon Stewert, Beanie Wells... the list goes on. Like Grant, none of these guys are better than average NFL backs right now.

Sorry, but Wynn sucks. He can't catch the football (1 catch, and can't run the ball. And if it's solely for blocking, put Kuhn in there! ------------------- What would hurt putting Wynn in there? Grant's 3.7 YPC, Wynn 2.3 YPC being a 5 yarder the biggest one. No thank you. ------------------- I say give Kuhn the ball more. He's our best 3rd down backer for now. Better hands, better blocking than the other guys.

Please don't base Wynn's average per carry off four carries. That's definitely not fair.

brian you nailed it in the last paragraph, unfortunately. wynn is nothing special. and while he DID have over 100 yards against the lions in the last game last year, don't forget that approx 70 of those came on one run and, ahem, it was against the lions. i am a firm believer in taking away the best and worst run on any given day, when trying to get a true sense of average. if you do that with wynns numbers they go from "a little more than so-so" to "meh...." i think back to last week when wynn missed a ENTIRE HALF OF THE FIELD on one run, and instead of bouncing outside, or hell even inside, he ran right into a cluster of guys. rediculous. bottom line is that TT screwed up when he kept wynn/hall/kuhn/johnson over sutton.

Jeremiah, you nailed it with that idiotic run by Wynn last week. Literally there was NO ONE from either team to his right and he blows straight into the mess ahead. NO VISION? Is he blind, or just dumb as a box of rocks. He needs to be replaced.

There is NO question in my mind, none whatsoever as a guy who followed every footstep of Sutton's career even including some high school game films ("Mr. Ohio Football), that barring injury he will be an excellent NFL back with outstanding instincts AND receiving skills. Right NOW he is a better fit for an offense whose O-Line is (at best) unproven. Down the road, in my opinion, it will be a milestone bonehead player personnel decision. The Panthers could see this, and their talent at RB is significantly better than Green Bay's. I think the Packers have a real issue evaluating running talent. They kind of lucked into something with Grant, who is hardly world class, but please let me know when you see anyone resembling a star or even a potential game-changer lined up in our backfield and or heading out into the flat as a RB Sutton just simply "has game". He's had to, as no one every HAS given him any credit for the talent and drive he brings to the field. At this point, he might very well be THE most productive back on the Packers' roster if he had been made active, even as the 3rd down specialist. I will shut up when he proves out to be a bust, but I really don't think that's likely to happen. He already HAS played with the big boys in the Big Ten, and distinguished himself.
