Packers Daily Links 11.11.09

Without the Packers having practice on Tuesday, the blogosphere found the time to evaluate and second guess the Packera ad nauseum yesterday.

Howie Magner of Milwaukee Magazine realizes that it will be a "daunting" task to make the playoffs this season. "The more daunting factor is who Green Bay must beat to earn a playoff berth," writes Magner. "Barring a colossal collapse, Minnesota will win the NFC North, leaving the Packers to scrap for a Wild Card spot. And who will they be scrapping with? No less than four other teams – two from the NFC East (either Dallas, Philadelphia or the New York Giants), plus Atlanta and Chicago. Tough sledding. Nine wins might not be enough. Yes, they'd probably need 10." Seeing as the Packers have several games remaining against playoff caliber teams, ten wins is going to be hard to come by.

After Packer Hall of Famer Gilbert Brown pointed the finger at head acoach Mike McCarthy, Bart Winkler of the Bucky Channel pointed it back at him. "Interesting points, Gilbert Brown, calling out a team's head coach," writes Winkler. "What about that time you were given a three-year contract to coach the Milwaukee Bonecrushers only to leave one year later for irreconcilable differences with ownership?"

Lori Nickel of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel got Packers quarterback coach Tom Clements to offer up an interesting statistic. "You want to minimize the sacks for certain reasons," Clements told Nickel. "No. 1, for the health of the quarterback, but I heard a stat once: If you have a drive with a sack in it, it's almost 90% certain you're not going to score. It's hard to make up for the lost yardage." 90 percent, huh? No wonder the Packer offense isn't doing that well.

Speaking of assistant coaches, Acme Packing Company has their mid-term report card out for the assistants. And I take umbrage with the assessment of Kevin Greene at a C+. "Kevin Greene (outside linebackers) gets barely a passing grade," according to the article. "Aaron Kampman has not adjusted well. Brady Poppinga has been a disappointment and Jeremy Thompson hasn't done much. It is from outside linebacker that most of the pass rush is designed to come in Caper's 3-4." What about his work helping to make Clay Matthews into one of the brightest rookie linebackers in the NFL?

Joe Arrigo of PackerChatters.com is a proponent of making changes on the coaching staff. "He needs to make changes to his offensive staff, namely the offensive line," writes Arrigo. "James Campen and Joe Philbin both need to go. For the past two seasons the Packers poor play up front has been a major weakness. Philbin was the line coach and Campen his heir apparent, both have failed. Aaron Rodgers is going to get hurt if he continues to get pounded week in and week out because the line can’t block."

"Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Jason Spitz, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Saturday, will undergo surgery this week to repair a herniated disc in his back," reports Brad Biggs of the National Football Post.

Also over at the NFP, former Packer Matt Bowen believes that the Packers have to avoid a loss to the hands of the Dallas Cowboys this weekend. "The worst thing that could happen to a team like the Bears or the Packers at this point in the season is to suffer another quick loss this week, because then the players will start to talk -- and when that happens, you can forget about 2009," writes Bowen.

Rob Reischel of Packer Plus points out that only one Ted Thompson draft pick has made the Pro Bowl, safety Nick Collins. "The draft has always been Thompson's bread and butter, though," writes Reischel. "And had many of them turned out better, the Packers wouldn't be in their current predicament."

Monty from Total Packers questions whether the Packers got the right defensive coordinator.

Jersey Al of Packers Lounge can't believes what he hears coming out of McCarthy's mouth.

Aaron Nagler of Cheeshead TV tells Packer fans to take a deep breath.

And Ol' Bag of Donuts has their mid-season report card.
