According to ESPN, here are the Packers cuts so far:

Wide receivers Jake Allen, Johnny Quinn, Taj Smith and Brett Swain, cornerbacks Scorpio Babers and Joe Porter, defensive tackles Conrad Bolston, Alfred Malone and Daniel Muir, center Brennen Carvalho, safety Tyrone Culver, linebackers Spencer Havner and Danny Lansanah, tight end Joey Haynos, running backs Noah Herron and Vernand Morency, guard Ryan Keenan, tackle Orrin Thompson and fullback Corey White.

They also placed defensive tackle Rodney Allen, center Junius Coston and long snapper J.J. Jansen on injured reserve.

Some of the cuts are a little surpising, in my opinion. Getting rid of both Herron and Morency? That gives us a VERY young backfield. Combine that with the age of all of our QB's and we've got a group of kids who have no idea who the ThunderCats are.

We'll just see if Ted is looking to pick anyone up from wire. Looks like there's been a few bigger names let go.

My choice (and yes I know I sound like a homer) but let's bring in Nick Hayden. Panthers cut him today too and we could use someone with a good motor on the D line.

Taking chances in final preseason game

The last preseason game is usually downplayed because teams generally don't play their starters very much.

The Green Bay Packers' last preseason game should be a little more interesting for a couple of reasons.

First of all, Jeff Fischer and the Tennessee Titans tend to play their starters more than usual in the final preseason game. That's just the way he operates, and it's always been that way.

Second, there are players on the fringe that are going to be playing their hearts out. It's their last chance to make an impression before the final round of cuts.

Two players in the secondary come to mind. One of them is Tyrone Culver. With both Atari Bigby, Nick Collins and Charlies Peprah not expected to play on Thursday at risk of an injury, Culver is only one of two true safeties on the entire roster expected to play Thursday. That means a lot of playing time. Virtually the whole game.

Culver should be starting next to Aaron Rouse, and he'll have every opportunity to prove himself. There's a slight chance that Culver could make the 53 man roster with a couple injuries to the safeties, but he's probably on the outside looking in. An interception or turnover of any kind would go a long way towards stating his case for inclusion.

Another player who stands to get a lot of playing time is cornerback Jarrett Bush. It's been said that the Packers plan on using Bush as a cornerback in the first half and a safety in the second half.

Bush should get opportunities that run the gamut in regards to his position. In the short time the starters are playing Bush might see some time in the nickel or dime packages. Once they exit, he'll likely be on the field for every defensive snap as he'll play in the base defense. He also stands to see a lot of time at safety in the second half with Culver seeing as a couple safeties are injured.

Expect the players to take a lot of chances. It could mean some exciting plays. But in the case of the seconday, it could also mean some players getting burned.

Friday August 1st blue chips and cow chips at Packers training camp

Among the blue chip performers at today's morning session at Packers training camp: Defensive tackle Daniel Muir batted down a pass by quarterback Matt Flynn during a team 11-on-11 portion of practice. As the defensive tackle position seemingly gets thinner by the minute, it's imperative that Muir steps up to become a force on the defensive line. After seeing spot duty during his rookie season, he's sure of becoming part of the regular rotation along the defensive line in his sophomore year.
