Daily Drink May 14th

Good morning Daily Drinkers. I'm Post-It Note Paul, your guest writer for today and Thursday while Dan Walsh takes a little Boston vacation. Why am I guest typing here? Good question. A few possible answers:

  • I can talk semi-intelligently about Wisconsin sports (if by "Wisconsin sports", you mean Packers, Brewers and Badgers)
  • Every once in a while, I send an email to a group of fellow "Lost"-watchers with links to blogs covering each episode
  • I've been told I have a face for blogging (well, technically they said "Morse coding," but that was just the old way of blogging, right?)
  • I was the only one foolish enough to accept doing this for free
  • Dan will look like an all-star blogger after I get done with things here
You make the call. If you like/hate what you're reading here, be sure to post comments on the commentable version over here.

My thoughts are with Brewers PA man Robb Edwards who suffered a heart attack yesterday

Wow. Eric Gagne pitching the ninth last night? That was a shocker. Not only were the Brewers in "closer by committee" mode just days ago, but Gagne pitched TWO innings on Monday night. Don't ever say Ned isn't willing to take some risks. Fortunately, this one worked. Gagne gave up a hit, but then worked a scoreless inning for his tenth save of the year. The game was solidly played by the Brew Crew. Another starter went a solid six innings as Carlos Villanueva joined Suppan and Bush in recording quality starts AND wins by starting pitchers for the third straight day. The offense continues to move in a positive direction, with Billy Hall hitting a homer for the second straight day, and Ryan Braun continuing his hot streak with a double and a triple leading to two RBIs and a run scored. Prince finally got into the action as well. For the most part the defense was solid as well, although Rickie Weeks could've ended the game a little quicker in the 9th with a good throw to Hardy. Read the Sportsbubbler recap here. I would include the ESPN highlight video from the game, but it doesn't look like they've posted one.

I read Jim Powell's blog every day. So should you. My favorite posts of his are the ones when the Crew is traveling. It's nice to get a perspective for other stadiums, communities and fans. And he doesn't pull any punches. Before last night's game, Jim blogged a few newsbites, and linked to some audio interviews (a chat with Suppan, and Bob Uecker's chat with Ned Yost). Read it here. What a difference a week makes: the Cubs, Cards and Astros all lost, so Milwaukee is now 3 games behind first place Chicago.

Yovani Gallardo's knee surgery was a success yesterday. I don't expect to see him back until Spring Training 2009.

It looks like Chris Capuano is headed for "Tommy John" surgery after all.

If you're interested in the latest on the goings on in the Brewers' minor league system, BrewersNation has a fantastic interview with the guys at Brewerfan.net. Sportsbubbler correspondents JJ & Ryan take a look at the Brewers Prospect of the Week: Angel Salome. As reported by Tom Hardicourt, a more familiar face in the minors, Derrick Turnbow, looks to be pitching at about the same level as he was with the big league club.

Badgercentric found a great Badger highlight clip on YouTube, set to Tom Petty.

Former Marquette basketball star Robb Logterman is being inducted into the Janesville Sports Hall of Fame next weekend. Rumor has it that the wife of your normal Daily Drink author is a big fan. (h/t Cracked Sidewalks)

Friday's guest Daily Drink writer discusses the non-controvers-Yi of the first season for the Bucks' first round pick.

ESPN is going to air NINE hours of live SportsCenter starting in August. On the one hand, this makes sense since watching the same highlights repeatedly is now why one tunes to ESPNews. On the other hand, it closes the book on some fond college memories of watching the same SportsCenter twice then quoting the best lines along with Karl Ravech and Craig Kilborn during the third airing. If I had a third hand, it would be pointing out that all of this live SportsCenter madness is going to be airing while I'm at work.

Erin Andrews Knows We Love Her (The Sports Point). In this clip she speaks to Dan about blogs and the "creep factor":

In NFL news:

Railbird Central reports on the Packers nixing the veteran QB backup route. Aaron Rodgers, this is officially your team. Brian Brohm, you better be a quick study, because you're next in line. Oh, there's also a Brett Favre mention in the article, but frankly, I'm on a Favre news hiatus (although rumors have him yukking it up with Bradshaw and the boys on Fox's pregame show). The Packers have a traveling charity basketball team? Who knew.

Planning to attend this year's Packers Hall of Fame Banquet but waiting to buy tickets? You're officially out of luck.

Mequon's Concordia University will be the site of the St Louis Rams' training camp.

No word on whether their cheerleaders will also be making the trip:

ESPN has their NFL Power Rankings up already, which is ridiculously early. The Hashmarks blog details who voted for who (John Clayton likes the Packers most of anyone)

In Coed softball, I made my season debut on the diamond last night. Ironically, I was subbing for the vacationing Mr Walsh there too. After a base hit in my first AB, I fouled into strikeouts in my final two appearances at the plate. That corresponded pretty well with the team performance as well, as we jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but ended up losing by 7 or 8. Here's hoping the Bayshore Bombers do better next week when the regulars return. If I can find highlight video on ESPN Ocho later, I'll post it.

A quick note to you golfers out there: Be careful when playing those holes next to the water. (h/t Deadspin)

Remember the girl who sang in the shower in the movie Elf? Well, proving that some actresses can carry their own in the music industry (No, Scarlett, you can't), Zooey Deschanel (her sister Emily is also an actress -- on the Fox series Bones) has teamed with M. Ward to cut an album under the moniker "She & Him." Here they are on Conan O'Brien singing one of my current favorite tunes with the backing of Yo La Tengo:

I'll be back tomorrow...
