Your regular Daily Drinker, Mr Walsh, is at the College World Series. Last night,
Stanford knocked off top-seeded Miami. If Dan was there, he probably missed it while ogling a certain sideline reporter.
Last night's Brewer win was not accomplished in the blow-out fashion of Tuesday evening, but the home team was able to hold on for a tight, 5-4 win over the Blue Jays.
Russell Branyan continued to give Billy Hall's agent a reason to remain quiet, going yard in his first at-bat. In the 4th inning, Corey Hart and Mike Cameron both scored on infield hits. Hart used his speed to slide under the throw home. Cameron continued to show good base running smarts, stealing second base, then seizing an opportunity to step around Blue Jays catcher Mike Zaun after a Ben Sheets bunt.
Cameron showed his power again with a homer in the 6th, and Corey Hart knocked in Craig Counsell in the 7th with the eventual winning run. Ben Sheets was solid, giving up only 2 runs and 4 hits in 6 innings for yet another Brewer quality start. Sheets now has 8 victories on the year.
The bullpen made things interesting. Carlos Villanueva gave up two singles before getting an out, and that was a run-scoring groundout. Villa lasted only 2/3 of an inning, giving way to Brian Shouse, who retired pinch hitter (and former Brewer) Kevin Mench.
Then the setup man of adventure who is Guillermo Mota came on to pitch "his" inning, the 8th. He couldn't even finish the inning, giving up a two-out solo home run to Greg Zaun, then putting runners on the corners. Why does he still get a positive stat (a "Hold") for a sub-par performance like this?
That prompted Yost to bring in Salomon Torres for a 4-out save. After walking a man to load the bases, Torres settled in to retire the Blue Jays on a groundout in the 8th and a double play ball in the 9th.

The other big Brewer news yesterday was less happy. Sounds like Prince Fielder has some IRS issues. Fielder isn't talking about it.
Chuckie Hacks notes that the lien was filed by the IRS in 2005, questioning how Prince gets to this point.
BrewersNation posts yesterday's minor league box scores. Names on the list you might recognize from recent SportsBubbler attention: Alcides Escobar, Angel Salome, and Jeremy Jeffress.
Bob Uecker's yacht was damaged by a freighter. Deadspin's Purple Prose column this week is about the Brewers' Sunday win over the Twins.
Packers mini-camp continued yesterday. There's a crowd of 7 at wide receiver.
Despite the loss of some guy who wore #4, the talent level is rising in Green Bay.
Coach McCarthy called off the afternoon practice yesterday, replacing it with a team bonding event. How best to build that team spirit? Split into 8 teams and shoot each other with paintballs, of course! The winning team included Edgar Bennett, Aaron Kampman, Korey Hall and Vernand Morency.
This raises a question: Which positions on a football team are best- and worst-suited for paintball?
The Packers are exploring whether they should make a run for Jason Taylor.
Brett Favre dropped out of a charity golf tournament. Of course, it's because of an NFL comeback, right? Stories like this are going to keep coming up until the season actually starts, I suppose.
Kissing Suzy Kolber's take on the Celtics' NBA championship. Meanwhile, the Bucks are examining their options for the NBA draft.
So, Tiger Woods won the US Open on an ACL that needed surgery and a double stress fracture in his left leg? I'm not sure if I could play 91 holes of golf in 5 days on my good legs. The downside of this display of awesomeness? Tiger's done for the season. Kinda sucks.
Javon Walker is out of the hospital, and expected at training camp.
Dan makes an annual trip to the College World Series. Me? I'm all about Lollapalooza in Chicago. The schedule was released this week. Friday looks to be an awesome day from beginning to end (although we'll probably pass on Radiohead). Friday's dilemna? Black Keys
or Gogol Bordello?
Thanks for letting me sit in. JD Mo (of the Bob Boozer Jinx) will be your guest Drinker tomorrow.
