  • July 31st Daily Drink: Favre, Favre, and more Favre, plus Gisele vs Bar

Post-It Note Paul here, subbing for Mr. Walsh, who is taking an intensive dance course. Actually, he's celebrating his anniversary. That's right ladies, Dan Walsh is not on the market.

Remember how happy you were after the Brewers wrapped up a 7-0 road trip with four thrilling wins in St Louis to push their road record above .500? Do you remember how that felt? Seriously, dig deep and try to remember, because all of that good mojo has disappeared in a flurry of bad defense and untimely hitting.

The Crew lost to the Cubs again last night, ensuring a second consecutive home series loss. For the second straight night, it wasn't even much of a contest. Shoddy defense led to two Cubs runs in the first. For a while, our only hitter who could touch Ryan Dempster seemed to be Manny Parra, who doubled with no outs and tripled. How did we fare in those RISP situations? Well, we stranded Parra both times. Let's not even get into the hit-and-run play that led to Jason Kendall getting thrown out at second in advance of Parra's double. We've been outplayed, outcoached and overmatched this entire series. Hats off to the Cubs.

If you want to relive the pain of another loss, here's ESPN's recap:

Here's post-game audio with Ned, Manny, Prince and Billy.

Rubbing some salt into the loss, the Cardinals won last night to move back into a tie with the Brewers for the wild card.

We do, of course, have a ton of Cubs fans in the area right now. I'd like to thank you for your input to our local economy, but would you kindly not fight Brewer fans in 3-against-1 matches? I mean, really, let's fight this out fairly.

    In other Brewers-related news:

    • CC Sabathia took out a full page ad inside Wednesday's Cleveland Plain Dealer sports section, thanking the Cleveland fans (and a local sponsor) for their support during his time there. Classy PR move.
    • Jim Powell reports in his blog that Yovanni Gallardo is hoping not only to pitch, but to start, in September.
    • The Brewers are having a fairly successful season at the box office, and on TV and radio
    • What is Erin Andrews doing flirting with the dreaded Cubs???

Headed to today's Brewers-Cubs finale? Well, you better leave early because the State Fair is also starting today.

Way back on May 14th, when I made my Daily Drink guest writing debut, I said this: "Oh, there's also a Brett Favre mention in the article, but frankly, I'm on a Favre news hiatus." Of course, the following smattering of links out of the googlzillion out there regarding Favre right now make a hiatus impossible.

On Wednesday, Packers President Mark Murphy met with Favre and his agent, James "Bus" Cook in Mississippi. ESPN has the story. Murphy had no comment, but guess what? "Bus" did. Personally, I'm surprised we haven't heard from Brett's brother Scott in a while. I just want this thing done with. Meanwhile, Commissioner Goodell has delayed acting on Favre's reinstatement request, hoping to give the Packers and Favre some time to come to an amicable solution. Ha. That's probably optimistic thinking. Did Murphy offer Favre $20 million to stay retired?

    Chris Mortensen's update:

Packer players are sick of the Favre news:

Even better... how 'bout a monotone rework of a Hannah Montana song about Favre? Gotta praise the dude's creativity -- the bobblehead is an especially nice touch. But, wow is his singing painful to listen to. (h/t Kissing Suzy Kolber)

Bob McGinn and Tom Silverstein are reporting that, internally at least, the Packers have discussed the possibility of trading Favre to the Bears or Vikings.

Favre stuff from around the interweb:

I'm guessing there might be a few more Favre-related stories out there in the blogosphere, but really, this is about all my stomach can handle to look at.

I was engaged in a lengthy email debate about the Favre situation over the last couple of days. I developed a little analogy:

It would be like getting engaged to a girl, then having the girl you broke up with who moved away and joined the peace corps move back to town and want to get back together.

You got engaged four months ago. You're currently working on the invitations for the wedding.

Most of your friends like the new girl a lot. They think your relationship will be rock solid. Of course, a few of them really really liked the old girl. She was your legendary girlfriend. The one you had a ton of awesome times with. And they'd sorta like it if you gave her another chance.

Let's not forget that while she was in the peace corps, your ex-girlfriend hooked up with that Swedish guy you were both friends with. That guy was never able to pull in the quality of girls that you could, but he seized the peace corps opportunity, and your ex- was callous enough to call him on the cell phone plan that you were still paying for (you bought phones together back when it seemed like you'd be together forever).

And now that you've told her you're not getting back together. Because you're getting married.

Well... she's telling you that she's going to crash your wedding and have sex with the Swedish guy in the middle of the dance floor. During the grand march.

To which my friend Jeff replied:

Let's also not forget that it is starting to look more and more like you may have ever so gently persuaded her to join the peace corp in the first place.

    My response:

Well, she threatened to join the peace corps every year for the last three years, then always changed her mind and didn't go. This time, she got on the plane to DC for her week of training before heading off to Darfur, had a breakdown on Tuesday and called you to come get her. You booked a flight, but while you were in the boarding area, she called and said she'd decided to go to Darfur for sure.

Now, you're not blameless in this because you've been flirting with this girl at work for the last two years too. But, you never asked her on a real date (you may have had lunch a few times) until the peace corps thing.

Followed by Jeff ending the story with this gem:

And for the grand finale...... Why would you ever decide to marry a girl you haven't had sex with? Sure, you grabbed her boobs in Dallas one time, but that's all the further you've gotten. Besides that, she seems to get a lot of headaches.

Can I use the word "boobs" in the Daily Drink? Man, I sure hope the censors don't get all up in Dan's grill about that one...

Speaking of the Packers, there's actually some non-Favre related stuff going on with the team:

    • While Ryan Grant sits out trying to negotiate a new deal, Brandon Jackson has been making strides in camp. One of the benefits of having Sirius satellite radio is the NFL radio channel. The Packers got discussed a few times yesterday. On Grant, they made some great points about why Grant holding out is silly. Why? He hasn't proven enough AND if he duplicates what he did last year? He'll be able to sign a much bigger deal next offseason.
    • The Packers' salary cap is in great shape (with or without Favre).
    • The Packers released a TE they had paid a signing bonus to acquire in the first place. Railbird Central says it was the right move.
    • Railbird Central also wonders if the Packers can trade for a defensive tackle (a position that is becoming thinner by the day)
    • The Journal Sentinel's Greg Bedard has a detailed rundown of Wednesday's training camp practice. Here's a summary version.
    • Don Walker reports that the Packers proposing a $20+ million project for the east side of Lambeau Field.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement ceremony is this weekend. That also means we get the Hall of Fame game (Colts - Redskins). But even better? We're pretty much officially in "ok to talk about fantasy football without being a complete dork" season. And I probably qualify as a FFL dork. I mean, I even created a service for tracking FFL records for leagues that use one particular fantasy service. I'm in my first draft of the year (I'll be in 8 or 9 leagues when all is said and done). It's one of those slow-email type drafts, so we've made it through 12 rounds in 5 days, with 13 more rounds to go (no setting lineups, waivers, or trades in this format -- you just draft it and forget it). With the 5th pick in round 1, I took Joseph Addai. I think I like 5 guys at the top of the draft this year. After that, I'd rather pick lower in round 1 and get that high second round choice.

Speaking of fantasy, AOL Fanhouse created quite a stir with their partnership with Fantasy Sports Girl. If you get your fantasy news from Fantasy Sports Girl, you are more than welcome in any of my leagues.

Dwyane Wade is taking an 'angry' approach heading into the Olympics. Let's just hope that anger doesn't distract from more important things, like making shots, playing defense, winning games. You know, that stuff that tends to lead to gold medals. Speaking of the Olympics, former Brewer manager Jim Lefebrve is trying to teach the Chinese baseball team how to hit. His goal of simply trying to "play the game right" sounds like the stuff that led the Brew Crew to 74 wins and a fifth place finish in the division in 1999. Interestingly, Lefebrve also had a bit of an acting career!

Buckingham U Blogger reports on some coaching changes at Wisconsin. In an ongoing series breaking down each position of the Badger football team, Jeff Potrykus looks at the young WR corps. ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg ranks the Big Ten's rivalries. Both of UW's protected rivalry matchups make the top 5. 2 hours later, he took another look.

Leonardo DiCaprio has been fairly successful with the ladies in his lifetime. Who do you prefer?

former g/f Gisele Bundchen or current g/f Bar Refaeli

Your input welcome in the comments section below.

I'm off to Lollapalooza in Chicago tomorrow-Sunday. Tickets are still available, but I believe they are expecting nearly 75,000 people each day. The lineup is awesome, and while hot, the weather looks like it's going to be quite cooperative for a 3-day outdoor festival. Here's my initial itinerary (albeit with some conflicts that will need to be resolved). Some bands I'm looking forward to seeing:

    Friday: Mates of State

    Saturday: The Ting Tings

    Great DJ Video

    Sunday: The National

  • July 30th Daily Drink: Bad Defense, Favre, Paige or Sam and Rocket Racing.

Well that sucked, again. With the Brewers not giving the fans anything to cheer about, the park seemed full of Cubs fans

Zambrano pitched a hell of a game last night, the Brewers couldn't do a thing against him. Sheets wasn't at his finest last night and imploded behind some horrid defense in the 6th. How was Jason Kendall the only Brewer charged with an error? How Ryan Braun wasn't charged with any errors is mind-boggling. He looked completely lost in left field. He botched the diving catch that he should have stayed in front of, then he turned the wrong way at a ball hit right at him and lastly, he didn't get a good jump on a fly ball in left that he should of caught. How was JJ's throw to home not an error? If his throw is on target, it's a out. That is a throwing error. Plain and simple. Finally, Corey Hart looked like he didn't care later in the game when he half-assed a ball that he should have kept in front of him. Sheets may have been listed as giving up 11 hits, but with that defense behind him, he didn't stand a chance. With no offense to talk about, it makes it easier to talk about the defense. If you must, the highlights.

I do have a small bone to pick with Tom Haudricourt (what's new right?).  First, he trashed all bloggers with his 'Ned Yost might be fired' piece from right after the Boston series. But that's a story we've touched on numerous times before. Yesterday he posts the Brewers line-up prior to the game. In that post he states "Rickie Weeks is not in the lineup tonight against the Cubs. Neither is Bill Hall. But Hall is batting .184 against Cubs righty Carlos Zambrano, so you can justify that move with stats" Really? I'm sorry Tom, but no you can't. Prior to last night's game here were Hall and Branyan's career numbers against Zambrano.

    Hall . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .184 (7-38, 6bb, 17k)

    Branyan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .156 (5-32, 1hr, 15k)

I don't see how you justify that move with stats. Branyan is worse against Zambrano than Hall is. If you take the time to show Hall's number's against Z, why not show Branyan's? Because it doesn't help you make your point? That was just flat out lazy on his part.

Is it wrong to hope the Brewers plunk a couple Cubs (soriano, ramirez) for them standing to watch a home run, they didn't hit?

ESPN's Gene Wojciechowski, says it's dress rehearsal for the playoffs. Vote for your favorite all-time Brewer. Cubs fans, you stay classy! Right Field Bleachers says the Brewers should trade backup catcher Mike Rivera. BrewTownBeat says the Cubs fans were pretty annoying last night. I'm far from shocked. Cubs issuing a reality check. From Chicago Tribune, both Cubs and Brewers are good bets for the postseason. With Angels trade, Jay Mariotti wonders if the Cubs have enough. Brewers vs. Cubs brings out the best and worst. Bucks Diary has a case of Brewers fever. A walkoff strike out? Very Cool.

Today's Brewers Must Read: Atomic Trousers - "Why Do The Brewers Hate Me?" Here's a quick sample: "But even as you try to spin it positively, these losses are heartbreaking. If someone called me and told me Iran attacked America and now controls the state of Oregon, I'd probably shrug and say "ah, we probably have too many states anyway." But seeing the Brew Crew fall flat on their faces in the season's biggest series is almost too much to take." It's worth the read, check it out.

Lastly Manny Parra shows you how to dress like a baseball player.

    (h/t cute sports)

Have I mentioned my vacation that starts tonight at 5pm can't get here soon enough? I can't wait to get away from all the Favre stories and I hope everything is settled by the time I get back.

President Mark Murphy is on his way to Hattisburg and the Packers don't want "Me First" Favre to come back. Where do they trade him to? Anywhere but Minnesota. Of course, the vikings QB stunk yesterday. Chuckie Hacks is excited for training camp. Railbird Central saves us from Favre talk, by examining roster spots. Packer Geeks literally have a problem. From the NY Times, Trying to move on, not knowing the next move. Forget Favre, there are other things going on. Packer Geeks wants to give Ryan Grant too much money. Donald Driver has some great quotes in this story. It's your move Ted. Charles Woodsen sums it up best "we've seen Brett play, we know what he can do. We've seen him have bad years, bad games, too. We haven't seen anything of A-Rod for a whole season. So how do we know what we gain or what we lose unless we see him?

So I'm starting to figure out my Daily Drink readers. Yesterday I asked a question about Torres and Gagne and got no response. I think this question should do a little better. The Bucks Energee Dancers held their tryouts the other day, you can check out all the photos here. But my question is simple:

                                       Paige                                      or                                             Sam?

Leave your answer in the comments (you have to be logged-in to comment) FYI, "Both" is not an option ya pervs.

    D-Wade and Gabrielle Union?

Penn State is in a bit of trouble.

Want to get a job in pro sports? Here's how.

    Nascar? Weak. Try rocket racing.

Awful Announcing and others think AOL Fanhouse has jumped the shark.

The Warped Tour hits town on Friday, so I give you Angels and Airwaves - the Adventure, Say anything - Wow. And the must see? MC Chris

Some NSFW language in the video

My softball team played it's final game of the season with a tough 14-13 loss. I redeemed myself by hitting not one, but two home runs. Of course, this is the week I didn't bring the camera. But, teammate Mike played with google maps and comes thru with this killer graphic/description.

    Yeah That's Right!

I'm off to celebrate my anniversary with my lovely wife, she's somehow put up with me for 3 years. For the record, I'm doing much better than I deserve. So the Daily Drink will be left in the fine hands of Post-it Note Paul tomorrow, JD Mo from The Bob Boozer Jinx Friday and a special guest on Monday. Talk to you kids again on Tuesday.
  • July 29th Daily Drink: Rickie Weaks, Aaron Rodgers, Whack-A-Cub Winner, Titletown, Energee and Miss Beer Cart Wisconsin

Well that sucked. The Chicago Cubs came with an infestation of their fans last night to Miller Park.

Now we know why Doug Melvin traded for Ray Durham, because Rickie Weeks continues to be a defensive liability at second base. At times he can make some great plays, other times he can botch something as simple as the throw. All the good mojo from the back-to-back jacks by Hardy and Braun went out the window. It's maddening to see it happen over and over again. Russell "The Muscle" helped take a little of the blame off of Rickie with another HR. It was his first home run since June 27th. Would love to see "the muscle" in the line-up tonight against Big Z. Not all the blame falls on Rickie, Torres walked two too many batters in the 9th. After striking out Fukudome, he walked Soriano and Fontenot then gave up the game winning double to Lee. With an offense like the Cubs have, you can't be walking the 1 and 2 hitters. Don't panic Brewers fans, we still have 9 more games with the Cubs this year. My question for Daily Drink readers is this: Eric Gagne continues to pitch well in relief, is it time to put Gagne in the 9th and Torres in the 8th?

The Home Run calls from Bob Uecker and Jim Powell were fantastic last night.

    Here are some video highlights

Here's our version of a postgame story, written by "Case of the Mondays" Todd Welter. The Bucky Channel goes off on Cubs fans. Bugs and Cranks knows the Brewers need to increase their OBP. BrewTownBeat says that Dick Weeks sucks at life. From Chicago, the Cubs gained a psychological edge. You wouldn't know it from looking at the JS Brewers page, but Tom Haudricourt visits 620 WTMJ every Monday morning, here's what he had to say yesterday about the Brewers Cubs series. Here's a nice interview with Jim Gantner. Ok I will give Cubs fans some credit, they booed Notre Dame Football coach Charlie Weis. Anyone openly mocking a two-bit, has-been football program gets kudos from me. Chuckie Hacks has officially crossed the line to stalking Trenni Kusnierek.

Today's Must Read: Rumors and Rants does the unthinkable. He's a Cubs fan, yet came to Milwaukee this past weekend and rooted for the Brewers. He compares himself to Judas. Check it out here.

Please, someone, anyone - make this guy stop.

So yesterday I sent out the challenge to see if anybody could top the score in our Whack-A-Cub game, which was 71. Well Mighty Matt stepped up to the plate big time. I won't mention where Matt works, otherwise he'll get in trouble for obviously playing this game all day long and not getting any work done. Which is actually one of the goals of our site. Mission Accomplished

    82 of 82 Suckas!!

82 of 82 a perfect score. Game over kids. I don't think anybody is beating that. But, I've been wrong before.

Packers opened with Training camp yesterday. I miss training camps where we talked about the position battles going on, on the field. This Favre off the field fiasco just makes me want to pound my head against the wall. The Ryan Grant holdout is actually pretty good stuff. The guy didn't play a full season as a starting Rb and he expects to get paid like one. Sorry Mr. Grant, but your agent is making you look like a complete a-hole right now. Here are some comments from Rodgers and Ted Thompson yesterday.

John Clayton gives a timeline of what he expects to see of the next couple days.

Is Brett Favre like Brooks from Shawshank Redemption? Fox Sports Jay Glazer tries to make sense of it all. ESPN says Ted Thompson is doing exactly what the Packers accused Favre of doing. Favre should be playing football. Sorry Rodgers, this is Favre's circus (with video). Railbird Central has what to watch for. Status quo on the Favre situation. 5 things to know about your Packers. Rodgers was the focal point of practice. The JS continues it's position breakdowns, this time it's Defensive Backs.

Take a look at your Bucks Energee Dance Team.

Another Big Ten preview has the Badgers #2 in the Big Ten and going to the Rose Bowl. Barry Alvarez is still trying to justify the Cal Poly game. You could of had Virgina Tech, but you chose Cal Poly instead. Fans have every right to be upset. The Badgers are going through a trial period at QB.

Tom Crean hasn't done anything yet and gets a two year extension.

Here's another nominee in the Miss Beer Cart Wisconsin....Erin

    And Katie

To see all the nominees and how to vote, click here. Check out the other nominees here and here.

Daily Drink reader, The Boehm sends over this fine graph for us today..

Don't get it? Shame Shame. Here's the answer.

Really ESPN? Valdosta GA is Titletown? Why not call Washington State the Big Apple? Call Minneapolis, Brew City. Just dumb and ESPN wonders why so many people complain about the garbage they put out.

The top 10 worst college football uniforms. Sports by Brooks offers up a very compelling way to make them look better.

I love that the BBC is using a Gorillaz themed video to promote the Olympics on the BBC, but this is just bizarro. Very Cool, but very bizarre. Remember kids, drugs are bad.

And what does NBC and America come up with? This. I'll take BBC version.

    And today's random music video.....

  • July 28th Daily Drink: Whack-A-Cub, Favre, Ryan Grant, Agent Zero hits delete and I kissed a girl

The Brewers start today the same way they did Friday, one game behind the Cubs in the NL Central. Both teams went 1-2 and neither have much momentum heading into this series. The invasion happens today. Remember to play our Whack-A-Cub game, you'll feel really good heading into tonight's game if you do. Send that link/game to every possible Brewers fan you know, the more Cubs whacked, the better the Brewers chances. FYI, the record is currently held by Daily Drink reader "The Blaz" with 71 Cubs Whacked. Can you beat that score? If you can, send over a screen shot.

Suppan didn't have it yesterday and I sure as heck don't buy this "He was one pitch away" nonsense that Nedley was saying yesterday. Blum is a .219 hitter, who just happens to be a career .500 hitter again Suppan. Just admit it Ned, Suppan didn't have it yesterday. 8 runs in 6 innings and 11 hits, is not "one pitch away." Some games your starter just isn't going to have it. Make the adjustments, you've got CC going to today, use up those arms in the pen! Ryan Braun continues his torrid streak going 3 for 5 with 2 RBI's. So much for a Home Run Derby slump! If you must, watch the rest of the highlights here.

BrewCrewBall says you want bullpen help? We already got bullpen help. Two Fisted Slopper says calm down people, it's only one game. Fukudome isn't as good on the road as he is at home. Hardy has been hitting the snot out of the ball at home and on the road. Bill Hall is no longer in a platoon with "the muscle."  A story on Darren Ford, the prospect in the Ray Durham trade. As always, Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti deserves a beatdown for this pathetic column. Chuckie Hacks doesn't care for the Cub who used to catch Brady Quinn's balls. BrewTownBeat wants to ditch the retro uniforms. Let the fun begin. Bugs and Cranks has a nice preview of the series. Chicago Daily Herald previews the series. Chicago Tribune preview. Chicago Sun-times preview.

Baseball Tonight examines the Brewers Cubs Series.

Biggest series in a long time for the Brewers and Brett's doing everything he can to steal the spotlight. Here's the latest.

Brett's concerned about one thing only, Brett Favre.  "I don’t want to be a distraction to the Packers, and I hope in the next few days we can come to an agreement that would allow me to continue playing football." Distraction? Are you kidding, that's all you've been since this whole thing started. Ted Thompson cannot trade Favre soon enough. Brett is off spouting to a reporter who treats him with kid gloves, ESPN's Chris Mortenson. Brett says the Packers don't want him to compete for the job. No kidding, not NOW they don't. You had plenty of chances to come back to the Packers with open arms and you blew it. Your time in Green and Gold has passed. Favre will wait a couple days for things to be settled. McCarthy is ready to move on. So are we Mike, so are we. Peter King is hanging out with his buddy in Mississippi. Could the Packers get a first round pick for Favre? More twists to the Favre saga. Jon Gruden is tired of the Favre questions. The Packers have never done anything like this before. A NY Times story, Where the Ice Bowl, Meets Ice.  McCarthy is disappointed in the Favre affair. The Jets and Favre whiff of desperation. It's a no-brainer for the Jets to get Favre. Or it would be a mistake to get Favre. Or Favre gives the Jets their best shot. The Journal breaks down the Linebackers.

It's time for another Brett Favre caption contest

People think my ego is this big! Suckers!

Leave your witty caption in the comments at the bottom (you have to be logged in to comment)

Ryan Grant is insulted? Insulted? You get paid to play a game. You were a third string running back and was only a starter because of injuries. You could possibly be a one year wonder and you've been offered a 6 year contract? Take it you whiny ***.

Some Packers fans videotaped themselves burning all their Favre memorabilia. Watch the video.

The Bob Boozer Jinx notes that the Gilbert Arenas Milwaukee trash talking has been taken off of his blog at NBA.com. The 76er's added Royal Ivey to their roster.

In regards to Lance Smith, Camp Lambeau thinks it's Boo Wade all over again. Badgers QB's will have to watch their backs. Badgers secondary is looking for answers.

Todd Rosiak has a interview with MU signee Junior Cadougan.

Look some classy Chicago Cubs tramps!

Hank Williams Jr will be back for the 19th straight year doing the intros to Monday Night Football.

Dude, your ankle isn't supposed to bend that way.

Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and Ludacris?

Random awful song "Vanilla Ninja" - When the Indians Cry. they may be hot, but what a terrible song.

So at my 10 year reunion this weekend, I run into an ex-girlfriend, who's.........now..........a.............*** (a girl who likes girls). Apparently I helped her realize that. Talk about shot to the ego. Although she talked about the mix tape a made for her had alot of good music on it. I guess I should have included this song.

    or this one.
