First up is a new feature we'll have every Friday - Against the Spread. It comes from our Packers blogger, Railbird Central. Every week he'll take a stab at some College Football "Locks". Here's his first installment.
Every week we'll take a look into the world of college football handicapping. Here's this week's picks:
-
Three star selection (bet your first born child) -- Purdue +2 at Notre Dame -- As much as Irish fans want their team to be good, it's just not. You'd think after last week's loss at Michigan State that Notre Dame wouldn't be favored, but it is. And that's good news for bettors. Kory Sheets should rack up plenty of yards on the ground, on returns, and through the air on receptions. If Purdue can get to Jimmy Clausen in the pocket, it'll be in even better shape. And the better the opponent, the worse the Irish play. Notre Dame is 11-25 against the spread in home games when playing against a team with a winning record since 1992.
-
Two star selection (your home mortgage should suffice) -- Central Florida -5 at UTEP -- The Miners have lost to New Mexico State and Buffalo this season, not exactly a murderer's row of opponents. Don't look for things to get any better vs. UCF. The defending Conference USA champs should be able to defeat UTEP with ease even without current NFLers Kevin Smith and Josh Sitton. Besides, UTEP is 9-21 against the spread as an underdog of 3.5 to 10 points since 1992. And they're 10-22 ATS in home games after 2 or more consecutive straight up losses since 1992 as well. UTEP also is without their quarterback Trevor Vittatoe due to injury, never a good sign.
-
One star selection (any family heirloom will do) -- Ball State -17 vs. Kent State -- Ball State is undefeated. If they're were able to go to Indiana and knock off a similarly undefeated Hoosiers team last week, there's no telling what they'll do to Kent State. They're without star wide receiver Dante Love due to injury, but they still have just as dangerous a target in tight end Darius Hill. Quarterback Nate Davis should have a field day against Kent even without Love. Kent is 2-12 against the spread over the past two seasons while Ball State is a perfect 7-0 ATS over the same span. In addition the Cardinals are 18-8 ATS over the past three years.
-
Couch cushion selection (maybe your kid's piggy bank too) -- Cincinnati -10 1/2 vs. Akron -- Cincinnati beat another MAC team, Miami, Ohio by 25 points last week. And that was with a backup quarterback. They should be able to beat Akron by 11. Their defense should suffocate the Zips. With Mike Mickens and Terrill Byrd, Akron shouldn't have anywhere to go.
Last week was an okay week for Against the Spread. Georgia and Michigan State were good picks while it's hard to believe South Florida didn't be Florida International by more. Year to date: Three star picks (1-1). Starred picks (2-4). Couch cushion (1-1). Overall (3-5).
Our friend Dwight Schrute also has a few of his own picks this week. After sorting through statistics and punching numbers into complicated formulas, Dwight came up with these locks! We'll keep track of his picks throughout the season.

Put one Schrute buck on Wake Forest -15 vs. Navy.

And a Stanley nickel on Auburn -6 1/2 vs. Tennessee
