Keeping Sveum?

That's the question behind this article in today's Journal Sentinel, Sveum on deck, will he score?

The players say nice things about him. “We’re very comfortable with Dale,” leftfielder Ryan Braun said. “He knows our abilities; he knows our personalities. He also understands how difficult the game is. So, it was a pretty easy transition.”

Robin Yount, an admittedly biased friend said, “I’ve stood right next to him (in the dugout) and watched him work. He’s got some great ideas in terms of strategy. He’s a smart guy in that area. And the relationship he has with the players is great."

Is a man with 3 years experience at AA the right man to take the Brewers to the next level? He was 8-8 as the interim Brewers manager. We do know one thing, he's better as a manager than as a 3rd base coach. He's no longer going to the be windmill at 3rd base. Personally I'd like to see a veteran manager come in and manage this team. Unfortunately the list of good, available veteran candidates is slim to none. Willie Randolph, Bob Brenly, Grady Little, Buck Showalter, Bobby Valentine, (gulp) Kevin Kennedy. No thanks. I'll pass on all of those. Dale Sveum may be the lesser of evils. That's the wrong way to pick a manager. If you want a manager with some fire in his belly, look no further than the Brewers Helena Montana Pioneer league team. (he goes nuts around the 1:47 mark, some NSFW words in the video)

So Brewers fans, do you want Sveum back or somebody else? Who do you want to see as the manager next season?

Dan, I agree with you that none of those other choices are ideal, One thing is that some of the others such as Brenly and Randolph may want some high $$ and I would rather save Attanasio's budget towards players.  The players are going to make the largest impact.  I say let's roll with Dale and see where he can take this team at the helm for the full year, just as long as he has the player's support, it is fine that Braunie says it in the paper but Melvin needs to ask the players personally, since they obviously did not get along with Yost at the end.

What are your thoughts on the make-up with the team for next year? (i.e Cameron, Durham, counsell, Kapler, Hardy vs Escobar, Fielder, etc.)

I think that Cameron stays, but I hope not. Durham, Gagne, Counsell are gone. Depending on how Gamel, Escobar do in AAA I wouldn't be surprised to see them move JJ over to 2B if they feel those other two are ready (I don't think they are).

Hall will be your super sub with Kapler subbing in the outfield. I think the Brewers keep Brad Nelson as a Left-handed power bat to bring off the bench. They are already looking at about $70mil in salaries, so I'm not sure where they'll pick up much other talent except for a trade.

I'd like to see Hardy go to 3B and have them move Gamel to RF, just like they did with Braun. Then, move Hart over to CF. Makes for a scary OF defensively though.

I'm guessing Gamel would have to spend some time in AAA learning the position, so let Kapler play in the meantime.

Saves a lot of money as far as re-signing Cameron is concerned and everyone knows Gamel is currently a defensive liability at 3B.

Hardy can play 3B for a few years until their next 3B prospect (who didn't go to Cleveland) is ready for the big leagues.

Just my initial thoughts....

Bernie, I like those thoughts. Maybe not for '09 but maybe in 2010. I suspect they'll do the same with Gamel, giv ehim some time in AAA to start the season and then bring him up in May-June.

I think it would be a dangerous move to move Hardy to 3rd, not necessarily because of his skills, I feel he is better fit there, but I heard that he made some comments that he did not want to play 3rd, any news on that front.  And we all know how poorly Hardy plays when he is not happy about something, look at his batting in the beginning of the yesr when he did not want to hit in front of the pitcher, he is kind of a mental midget.

Camerson is a little pricey at 10mil, but where else do we go, I do not think they trust Gmynn to be our everyday player, that worries me.

We need a closer!!

I just think Hardy didn't get sh*t to hit with the pitcher behind him, which is why he was pissed at Ned.

I'm just hesitant to move a player, because the last time we did that, he turned into Bill Hall.

What's the deal with that video?  It looks like a minor league baseball documentary in the works, but no reference to what it will end up being.

It's a big mistake to give a 33 year old outfielder $10M when all you have to do is give him his $750K buy out.

akittell, I've just sent an e-mail to the production company asking for more info about that documentary. Their website just has the video too and nothing else.

September proved Cameron is not worth $10 Million.

I think they should leave Hardy at SS and move escobor to 2nd.  we all know what Hardy can do defensivly.  bottom line is both of them need to be in Brewers uniforms and on the field!

Lasty whoever the new skipper is the lineup should not change everyday like with Ned.  Hardy is 2, Braun is 3, Prince is 4 and Hart is 5.  fit everyone else around that and leave it!

This team will take a step back unless they ake significant picthing additions, (a Jake Peavy who is rumored to be on the block, it would take alot).  that being said, why not move the young guys in and make 2010 a great year!  in 2010 we will have Jefferies to go with Yovani and Parra.

Gamel to RF seems like the right move but it will take at least a year in the minors before you can afford to bring him up.

I want no part of Corey in CF, he takes too many bad routes in RF.

Moving Escobar off SS would be the dumbest thing ever, you don't waste that range at another IF spot.

Any discussion on moving defensive liabilities around should include moving them to first base.  Fielder probably won't be with Milwaukee for the long haul, so he's eventually likely to be the trade bait for a good starter or closer, probably from the American League (Prince=DH).  I doubt Nelson is the future at first.
