Tuesday Morning Hangover: Packers/Browns, Bucks Preview Mega Edition

So we're a day late this week.  Well, working a 22 hours over the weekend, and at it again early Monday, didn't leave me much time to craft the MMH, so the usually surly, turd, Dan Walsh, granted me mercy and allowed an extension.  For that, and only that, I thank him.

So, that's what establishing the run can do, huh?  Wow.  I realize the Browns are an awful team, and by saying that, truly awful teams may be offended, but allow me to eat some crow.  At least for one week, Ryan Grant looked like a starting running back in the NFL.

Were the numbers inflated a bit?  Sure, but he looked as good as he's looked in a while.  One thing I've noticed, that you have to like, is that each week, Grant seems to get better as the game goes on.  The Fox crew showed some numbers Sunday afternoon, stating that Grant has his highest yards per carry in the fourth quarter, and although those numbers can be a bit deceptive and don't tell the real story, it's a good sign.

It may be entirely coincidental, especially considering the teams they've played of late, but one has to notice that this team is running the ball much better when TJ Lang is playing left tackle.  If nothing else, Lang looks like a very intriguing prospect who may actually develop into a solid lineman down the road.

Did you know Aaron Rodgers is the second-highest rated passer in the league?

Spencer Havner looks like he might become a legit weapon.  Enough of this splitting time at LB/TE, let the man focus on playing TE.  He looks like such a natural pass-catcher for a big man.

AJ Hawk looked as good as he's looked in a while on Sunday, and even still, it was nothing special.  You hate to see this happen to guys like Hawk, because he's a good guy and a hard worker, but Hawk is nothing special.  Actually, to borrow the phrase, Hawk is just a guy.

I'm not a real big Brady Quinn fan, but are you seriously telling me that he's worse than Derek Anderson?  Seriously?  Brady Quinn is worse than what I just watched for four quarters on Sunday?  Same with Vince Young, why wasn't he named the starter two weeks ago?

How good is Donald Driver?  Most under-appreciated player this past decade in the NFL.  Last week, I heard one local sports talk station asking if Brett Favre made Donald Driver or if Driver is just a good player...yes, even two years after Brett is gone and no longer throwing to Driver.  I'll give you one guess what incredible station came up with that...that's right, the same station who runs the awful Thompson parody that not only sounds nothing like Thompson, but is far from humorous.  Milwaukee's sports leader, indeed.  Keep up the good work you fellas on Grange...

And speaking of sports talk radio, is there anything more lame than "Free-for-all" or "Random" insert day here?  Lets break that down, all that station is saying is "Hey, our hosts are too lazy to actually think of something to talk about or a new segment to run, so why don't you just call in and do all the work for us."

While we're on the subject of bad...

The Bottom Five:

32. Cleveland Browns
31. St Louis Rams
30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
29. Tennessee Titans
28. Washington Redskins

Clay Matthews, on the other hand is everything we thought Hawk would be.  Matthews is a playmaker and so far, looks like one of Thompson's better draft picks.

Much like Donald Driver, doesn't it feel like Charles Woodson has quietly been arguably the best cover corner in the league the past few seasons?

And while we're talking about good...

The Top Five:

5. New England Patriots
4. JeriShow
4. Minnesota Vikings
3. Denver Broncos
2. Indianapolis Colts
1. New Orleans Saints

I really fought for JeriShow to crack the top five, but eventually, was overruled.  I mean, they're the undisputed WWE Tag-Team Champions, that has to count for something, doesn't it?

Bucks Season Preview aka Where Half of You Stop Reading:

After years and years of calling for a Bucks team that actually played defense, Bucks fans got their wish last year.  Scott Skiles came to town and brought defense with him, and this year they'll undoubtedly be just as good, if not much improved on the defensive end.  Problem is, the offense may be nowhere to be found at times.

If Andrew Bogut can stay healthy and Michael Redd can continue to play like he has in the preseason, this team is at least a 33-36 win team.  It's not unrealistic to think Bogut can give you 15 and 10 if he's healthy, nor is it unrealistic to think Redd can score 24 a night if the knee holds up.

Hakim Warrick provides the team with a highly skilled offensive and defensive player, serving as their energy guy off the bench.  Carlos Delfino gives them a gritty defender who's also a streaky shooter, probably best served at playing off the bench, and Kurt Thomas gives them more toughness down in the post, something Scott Skiles has been craving.

Richard Jefferson is gone, but Jefferson wasn't well suited for this team.  RJ needs to be the third guy on a good team.  He's no more than a complimentary player.  The Bucks were asking too much of him last season, and although he played well, you saw Jefferson isn't good enough to shoulder the load.  He would have fit in nicely serving as third banana to Redd and Bogut, but for what this team is doing and where they're headed, they were wise to move him for cap room.

Brandon Jennings will be a very good point guard in this league.  It just might not happen for three years, and likely won't happen this year.  Luke Ridnour is best served as a backup in this league, a role he'll eventually move into with this team, but probably not right out of the gate.  I just have a hard time seeing Skiles starting Jennings from day one.

The problem this team is going to run into, is scoring the basketball if injuries occur.  If Redd or Bogut miss more than 12-15 games, this team will be in real trouble, and if both of them miss extended time, well, you're looking at another 26 win team.

The absolute worst case scenario would be for injuries to hit this team hard, and injuries to guys like Redd, Ridnour and Kurt Thomas.  All veterans who carry some varying levels of value, that GM, John Hammond will likely look to move around the trade deadline if his team is out of contention.  If you're the Bucks, you want to make the playoffs, or be bad (high lottery pick chances) while Michael Redd plays well, so you can deal him to a team in need of a scorer, and force that team to take an additional contract on, like Dan Gadzuric.

Likely Starting 5:

Ridnour
Redd
Mbah a Moute
Thomas
Bogut

Guys You Won't Miss:

Charlie V and Ramon Sessions.

Why does everyone in this city love Ramon Sessions?  He had a weak jumper, was one of the more inconsistent players in recent team history, and flourished against bad teams/in garbage time.  Ramon would look real good one game, then awful the next three.  Look at all of his big performances.  I'll grant him this, the game he had against the Pistons last year was outstanding, but save for that, he put up numbers in mop-up time or against bad teams (See his 20+ assist game in 2008).

Ramon Sessions is not a starting PG in this league.  If he was, why did everyone pass on him for so long this off-season?  Minnesota only signed him because of the Ricky Rubio fiasco.

Oh and Charlie V...yeah, thanks for the memories, see you later.  Talk about a tease.  Charlie V was Tim Thomas all over again.  Tons of potential, but didn't show up everynight, and never showed up defensively.  More than that, he's a guy that needs touches, something he'd never get on this team if everyone was healthy.  Remember the Charlie V we saw in the beginning of the season?  You know, the one who slept through games and was barely noticeable?  Funny how when half the team went down and he started getting the ball, he was noticeable.

Yes, I know almost everyone in the league is like that, but Charlie V is one of those players who you lose through games if he's not getting what he feels is enough touches.  I won't miss him.  Good luck with that Detroit - and speaking of which, what the hell is Detroit doing?  They just spent $90 million on guys who're coming off the bench?  And why do you need Ben Gordon and Rip Hamilton?  I'm sure both of those guys are going to be fine splitting time/touches.

Oh, and once again, Ramon Sessions is overrated.  Get over it.

Prediction:

They'll be a fun team to watch, and an easy team to root for.  Depending on how you want to look at it, unfortunately or fortunately, this team plays hard for Scott Skiles and wins 37 games and fights for the final playoff spot, ultimately falling short.

Rambling Home:

Wait, they're still making "Saw" movies?

Am I the only one who's been massively disappointed with ESPN's much hyped "30 for 30" project? Look, documentaries need to be more than 60 minutes, for the most part, OR, if it's an hour...it has to be an hour.  Not 60 minutes, with commercials.  I've found myself coming away from each one with more questions than answers.  The USFL one was by far the best, and that needed to be much longer.

I can't be the only one who records TV shows, despite the fact that I watch it live and never watch it again, can I?

On a related topic, last week I found myself purchasing the DVDs of season 4 of "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" and season 5, part 2 of "Nip/Tuck", despite the fact that I have all of the episodes of both seasons saved on my DVR.

Remember how awesome the War Games pay-per-view used to be?  Why can't they bring that back?

Did we really have to get the Jets/Raiders matchup as our late game from CBS on Sunday?  I mean couldn't we have gotten 3 hours of infomercials or something?

Since there's such a team trivia craze going on at bars all over the place, I'm amazed there isn't an all sports trivia league popping up on the team trivia circuit.

When I was at Starbucks Tuesday morning, the woman making my Pumpkin Spice Latte kept talking about breastmilk and breastpumps to one of her coworkers.  Now, I know what you're thinking, awesome, right?  Wrong, she was not hot.  Secondly, she went into great details.  Details I didn't need to know or want to hear about.  When my drink was ready, she was sure to bring it up again as she handed it to me.  "Oh, sorry you had to hear all that talk about breastmilk and breastpumps.  I'm sure that probably grossed you out when you heard me talking about my chaffing and seeing me use milk in your drink".  I kid you not, that was said.

After I threw out my latte, the latte I could no longer drink thanks to the first woman I dealt with, I went to a second Starbucks later in the day and didn't get one of those protective sleeves put on my coffee cup.  Talk about something you don't realize the value of until you don't have one....

Buffalo Wild Wings opened in Waukesha on Monday and was giving out free wings for a year to it's first 100 customers.  I drove past it on Sunday morning and noticed 25 or so tents set up.   Seriously guys?  I love BW3's as much as the next guy, but I'm not waiting overnight for free wings for a year.

One thing I would wait overnight for...Tweets from BrewTownBeat, but you don't have to.  Follow the BTB on Twitter @BrewTownBeat.

Just because they're awesome, and it's a good cover version...

See everyone at the SafeHouse Halloween party tomorrow night, I'll be the guy not dressed as, but speaking like Robert Barone.

Oh, and Go Waukesha West Wolverines

Those wargames events were awesome.  Especially since the 4 horsement were always involved.  They just got bad at the end when WCW had them and everybody just played the "I'm knocked out" card.

Andersen is awful. Brady Quinn might end up being an OK quarterback one day or he might just be a bust, but  (1) Quinn gets an $11 milllion raise for 2010 and 2011 if he's behind center for 70% of this season, and (2) it doesn't matter who you put in at QB the Browns will still suck. They don't even put him in during garbage time or when Andersen gets shaken up. It looks like Browns management has given up on this team already and is looking to cut costs.

Oh man, the Horsemen in WarGames was can't lose.  Remember the one where Curt Hennig turned on them and slammed Flair's head in the cage?  That was probably the last good one.

Wouldn't sleep outside for a year of free wings???  I've slept outside waiting for Brewer tickets to a game I had no idea if they would win.  I am guaranteed to get chicken wings, for a year, and I know exactly what that entails...of course I'd sleep outside for it!

I wikipedia-ed the ol' wargames matches.  I had no idea it was whole tour of house shows.  I can't imagine how many razor blades those guys went through from 87-89.
