11.3 Morning Coffee: Irish Accent Edition

A Rachel Perry type of day.
A new Statis-Stix column comes your way at 10am.

Tomorrow, I'll also be posting the Frosty Mug over at Brew Crew Ball. So you'll get a Morning Coffee here at around 8am and then a baseball centric Frosty Mug at about 9am. I still haven't figure out how I'm going to write both.

The Vikings has also out performed the Packers on the field, because of moves they made in the offseason: From Tom Silverstein's article. The team that beat up the Packers both home and away arguably has also been outperforming the Packers during the past couple of off-seasons. The Vikings have added at least one big-time player each of the last four years and are to the point now where they may have as many as 11 players selected to the Pro Bowl this year. Here's a year-by-year comparison:

2006: The Vikings - Steve Hutchinson and Ryan Longwell.
The Packers - Charles Woodson, Ryan Pickett, Greg Jennings.
2007:
The Vikings - Adrian Peterson, Sidney Rice and Visanthe Shiancoe.
The Packers - Justin Harrell and Ryan Grant.
2008:
The Vikings - Jared Allen and Bernard Berrian.
The Packers - Brandon Chillar and Jermichael Finley.
2009:
The Vikings - Brett Favre, Percy Harvin and Phil Loadholt.
The Packers - Duke Preston, B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews.

Basically since 2007 the Vikings have out-drafted Ted Thompson and made bolder moves in the offseason. The drafting is a bit surprising considering that is supposed to be Ted's line of expertise. But it's not surprising on the free agent side of things. The Vikings owner Zygi Wolf wants a new stadium and the only way he stands a chance is if he wins, and wins right now. So he went out and bought the best talent available and Adrian Peterson fell into their lap. So, the main difference between the Vikings and Packers is a go-for-broke GM vs. slow-but-surely GM. Which would you rather have?

You need to go back one year to 2005. It was TT that let Darren Sharper head up north to the Vikings. Granted he only had one great season in 2005 and then it looked like he was trailing down. But now, he's having a career year, leading the NFL in INT's. TT did out draft the Vikings that year, getting Rodgers, Collins, and Poppinga. None of the Vikes draft choices are still on the team.

OK, Rachel Perry. What's the old saying "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"? I don't think anyone considered these two birds and that bush........

Sorry Deac, you can't go back to the 2005 draft. The article compares Zygi Wolf to Ted Thompson. The 2005 NFL Draft was in April, one full month before Wolf's offer to purchase the Vikings was accepted.

Deacon, Sharper is terrible.  He gets the ball, but his routes and angles are horrific and he gives up so many big plays.  My friends and I have called him Darren "Bad Angle" Sharper for years.  Last night's MNF game was no exception.  He dropped a pick, but he gave up several huge plays in both the passing and running game.   I was very happy to be rid of him, especially considering what his salary would've been.

That's awfully convenient: TT's first season (when all we got was a franchise quarterback and a starting safety) doesn't support the thesis, so we'll ignore that year and start when Wilf bought the team.

Jim-The article is comparing Wolf to Thompson.  Why?  Thomson is the GM, Wolf is an owner.  Looking at the Vikings website, I don't think the Vikings have a guy with the "GM" label, but reading their responsibilities it sounds like Rob Brzezinski (V.P. of Football Operations) is the closest thing they have to a GM.  He's been with the team for 11 years, so I'd definitely consider the 2005 draft as fair game. To answer the question, I will take Ted over Rob all day long, and that's even with shaken confidence in Ted right now.

As Rubie mentions, beware of selective endpoints.  Also, the Vikings went Troy Williamson #7 overall & Erasmus James #18 overall in 2005.  Saying they are not with the team anymore doesn't do the terrible-ness of those picks justice.  It's more like-The Vikings did as bad as you could possibly do with 2 top 20 picks that year.
