When Dan asked me if I could fill in for him today, my reply was, "I'll fill in again when the Badgers win a game. So, maybe this Fall." Somehow, he took that as a yes.

Dan was allegedly at the Marquette-DePaul game, which ended favorably for the hometown team. The Golden Eagles have now won 12 straight. Brew Town Beat liked Buzz' suit. Do any of you MU fans miss Tom Crean? I mean, even a little bit? Didn't think so.

Speaking of travisshamockeries, why isn't there a Marquette fan blog in the SportsBubbler family?

While MU was shooting at a 57% clip last night, the Bucks shot 20 percentage points less and, not surprisingly, lost. The Bob Boozer Jinx discusses the Bucks and... June Cleaver? Bernies Crew found some Cub bloggers bashing the Brewers. I guess 100 years with no championships causes you to focus on the challenges faced by other teams, instead of your own. Brew Town Beat is either a big fan of Trot Nixon, or is still reeling from Corey Hart's disappointing finish to last season.

We're in the slowest NFL news period of the year, but there is some interesting content up at Packers.com. First off, McCarthy and Capers have begun the process of transforming the defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4. They've also got a profile of new Outside Linebackers Coach Kevin Greene, who I think is going to bring some much needed fire to the defensive sidelines. Aaron Kampman? He's definitely moving to LB. Railbird Central hopes the Packers don't over-spend on a punter.

The Onion Sports Network has some breaking news regarding Giants head coach Tom Coughlin. It's scary how much this sounds like something you'd hear on that four-letter sports network.

For the hockey-types, Admirals Short Shifts crunches some numbers and examines the trend of dressing 7 defensemen.

To those of you in the service industry (Winks Thinks anyone?), don't rush to wait on Tiger Woods' table. Apparently, he's not much of a tipper. (scroll to the last item -- and hey, what's with stealing the SportsBubbler's Six in the City theme?)

One of my favorite new discoveries is "Attack of the Show" on G4TV, and if I wasn't engaged, I'd be very attracted to co-host Olivia Munn (something about seeming down to earth, talking technology, being legitimately funny and well, pretty hot). Olivia launched her new website this week, and she regularly features offbeat videos and such, like this one , where she plays Truth or Dare. (Don't worry, it's safe for work)

Aug. 4th Daily Drink: Favre vs. Rodgers, Air Fource One, Family Night, Brewers "B" Squad, and Many Shameless Plugs

Hey gang! While Dan is still off romancing the wife, I'm taking over Daily Drink duties to kick off your work week. For those of you that don't know me, you can just call me Winks. I'm the author of The Bucky Channel, which Dan links to often, but more of you need to visit. Those of you in Western Wisconsin may also know me as this guy.

I was worried I wouldn't have much to write about for Dan today, but then I remembered that Brett Favre exists. You all know the latest by now, he's back. After Mark Murphy released his official statement, it was reported that the Packers are going to have Favre compete for the starting job with Aaron Rodgers. So much for going in a different direction. Personally, when I watched that retirement conference back in March, I would have never been able to predict the mess that has followed. Not even as a joke. This has been ridiculous, and one way or another, it needs to end.

But it probably never will. Over at my site, I try to look into the future to see how this mess will play out. Result: Not good. ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert wonders if this will be a fair fight. Camp Lambeau says we should all just relax. PackerChatters feels bad for Ted Thompson. Brats and Beer thinks this will be a delicate dance. Gene Wojciechowski says it's an unnecessary mess. Here's something I haven't thought of yet, how does the Favre vs. Rodgers battle affect your fantasy draft? The Packers have hired Ari Fleischer (yes, that Ari Fleischer) as a consultant. Yep, that was Favre's path of flight from Mississippi back to Green Bay last night. Kudos to Railbird Central on the grab. My brother, coincedentally named Brett, says they were showing the flight path on the local news, and wouldn't have been surprised if "Air Fource One" took a quick detour to Minneapolis. And yes, there are still trade rumors of Favre to the Vikings.

Even with all of that happening, I still think the biggest Packers news of the weekend was that Ryan Grant is back in camp. The running back signed a four year deal which could be worth up to $30 million, if he earns all of incentives, which almost never happens. I think it's a pretty reasonable deal. I did, however, think Grant's agent handled the situation poorly throughout the negotiations, to which Brats & Beer concur.

If that wasn't enough, Sunday was also the Packers Family Night Scrimmage. Even though it was just offense vs. defense, it was good to see football being played again at Lambeau Field. Aaron Rodgers didn't perform as well as I would have personally liked him too, and was even booed when he was picked off by Aaron Rouse in the 2 minute drill. Alright fans, can we not do that? Some of us want Rodgers, some of us want Favre, but at the end of the day only one of them will be starting week one for the Packers. Whoever it is should be supported 100%, even if Favre is a giant prima donna who loves the attention. Did I just type that out loud? Honestly, I guess I don't mind that he's back, but this has just played out in the worst possible way.

Packers, Packers, Packers, but let's not forget about the Brewers. You might have thought it was a split squad game yesterday, with Durham, Counsell, Kapler, and Branyan all getting the start. Craiggers and Gabey (I've never called them that before, and don't know why I picked now to do so) each had a couple of hits a piece, but the team was unable to put any runs on the board. Jorge Campillo looked quite good for the Braves, much better than Ben Sheets. Sheets was practically yelling at himself after every pitch, clearly unhappy with his outing. Here's the wrap. I wanted to post the Brewers highlights from ESPN, but I couldn't find them. Plus, there really weren't any.

It wasn't a bad series, by any means. The Brewers smoked the Braves on Friday night 9-0. On Saturday, all 600 pounds of Sabathia and Fielder led the Crew to a 4-2 victory. However, the Cubs took 2 of 3 from the Pirates, so the Brewers are still 5 back. On the plus side, the Cardinals lost 2 out of 3 to the Phillies this weekend, so that means Milwaukee still has a 1 game lead for the Wild Card.

Next up for the Crew are the Reds in Cincinnati.

Somehow, Erin Andrews is surprised you'd think of her as a sex object. (Wait... If she's not, then what exactly is she?)

From the "Please Don't Ever Let This Happen" Department, Mark Cuban is getting closer to owning the Cubs.

And now a bunch of things I don't care about but some of you might. Some guy drove his car really, really, fast. Some horse won a race. A golfer did well. People played tennis.

I almost forgot! The NFL season is officially underway. The Redskins beat the Colts, 30-16. I didn't watch it either.

I've noticed the Daily Drink usually ends with some sort of music video. I have nothing timely to play, so I'll try to put a plug in for my friend Tony's band, Verona Grove, out of Fond du Lac. Their music isn't necessarily my cup of tea, but I stole a girl from him in 9th grade, so I always felt like I owed him. This is them with "Everything You Dreamed".

Fine, I'll admit it. I like that song. But isn't that the beach shack that Marissa Cooper always ran to when she was sad?

J.D. Mo here, perpetrator of the Bob Boozer Jinx, filling in for daily drinkster Dan Walsh. GREAT job by Post-it-note Paul yesterday! Dan, as you know is off in th' upnorth escaping the dog days of summer in chilly lake Superior, celebrating his wedding anniversary and

1) escaping the Favre drama as it escalates toward an anti-climactic settlement (or does it?);

2) seeking relief from the pain of Brewer losses to da Scrubs, knowing that by the time he returns Dan will have missed a Jeff Suppan start and the crew will be back to their winning ways with Sheets, Sabbathia and Parra.

3) running for higher office, please see video evidence below.

With NFL commissioner Roger Goodell holding up Favre's reinstatement and Favre mulling a $20 million retirement deal from the Packers, all Favre has to do is figure out what he really wants. As we know, this has proven difficult for a guy who, for a few years in the 1990's was the Michael Jordan of football. Come to think of it, Favre's various tactics -- pressing his case in the media, pushing the Packers to the brink to get the trade he wants or his job back -- are the kinds of things Jordan would have done to get what he wanted. Mr. Football and Mr. Basketball have a lot in common, both willing to sacrifice "team" for their personal interests, assuming as they would that their interests are the team's best interests. Jordan took a year-and-half off to play baseball and came back midseason when it suited him, not the Bulls. Like Favre with the Packers, Jordan wasn't really encouraged to come back after his last Bulls season. So he "retired" -- and unretired three years later. Favre may or may not be physically able to unretire at will (although, like Jordan, he can probably do that too) -- but Favre will play football again. The question is for whom?

The Jets? The Press Gazette reported that, as of last night, talks with New York were heating up.

Milwaukee media' has lost its mind in the story, and of coure, so have our friends at ESPN (that's what they do best). The up to the minute news is that Favre texted ESPN about the $20 million offer:

The text sounded more like something Deanna would say, didn't it? But here's another update from Chris Mortensen:

No, Favre won't be in Green Bay today, and won't head for camp until reinstated, his agent says. THE FLIGHT HAS BEEN CANCELLED ....

And here's a suggestion from Chris Mortensen, quoting Silverstein in the Journal Sentinel that the Packers may be willing to trade Favre within the division, if he turns the dough down and pushes them (the Jordan rule of thumb).

If you've still got your job after watching all of that at your desk, can you put in a good word for me there?

The sCrubs swept the Brewers, and it pains me to write that. I may just pretend it didn't happen and surf around for more Favre updates. But 'Enuff of that. There is an upside: 1) The Cubs have left town. No I'm not going to say anything rotten about Cubs fans, though my buddy Adam once got tossed in the hoosegow after a yuppie Cubs fan beaned him (accidently?) in the head outside the Cubby Bear bar near Wrigley. This occured as people were filing out of Wrigley after a Cubs loss. Adam picked up the ball, beaned him back and a big scuffle ensued that ended with both Adam and the yuppie Cubs fan in handcuffs. The Chicago cops actually had the good sense to put them in adjacent cells at the police station house, and they spent a couple of hours screaming at each other through the vents. A true story. Adam may be the one guy from the north side of Chicago who hates the Cubs more than Brewer fans do.

Upside #2 - The Brewers have six more games against the sCrubbies, plenty of opportunity for payback.

Sept. 16-18 @ Wrigley

Sept. 26-28 @ Miller Park to close the season.

Upside #3 - Still in second place despite the sweep, tied with the Cards at five games back.

Now about yesterday's 11-4 loss, I have a theory about Dave Bush. I like to call it "The Dave Bush Theory of Abject Mediocrity." Bush will get the Brewers to the 5th inning and, most of the time the Brewers will still be in the game. By the 6th inning, Yost is taking his chances leaving him in, and often does. Bush was Bush again yesterday, although this time the Cubs got to him in the 4th -- but then the Cubs lineup always gets to Bush. He's now 1-7 lifetime against the Cubs. Still, Yost left him on the mound and Bush held the line until the 8th when the Cubs chased him with 4 runs. Mediocrity at its most mediocre. That's our Dave Bush, now 5-9 with an abjectly mediocre ERA of 4.69, slightly above his career ERA. He's no longer starting on the road with the Bush/McClung home-and-away platoon, but when the home team mustered only a run against Rich Harden, there wasn't much Dave Bush could do but ... be Dave Bush.

The Cubs acquired Harden recently from the A's, and in two National League starts (1-1), Harden's ERA is a miniscule 1.11, a figure that can't possibly hold up down the stretch. (Apparently, I'm in a "silver lining" mode today).

Upside #4 - The Brewers head for Atlanta and games against two batting practice Charlies:

Tonight (6:30PM), Jeff Suppan (5-7), hammered by the Astros last Sunday and looking very hittable since he came back from injury vs. Chuck James (2-3, 8.22 ERA).

Saturday (2:55PM), C.C. Sabathia (10-8, 3.33) goes against Charlie Morton (2-4, 7.26)

Sunday (12:30PM), Ben Sheets (10-4, 3.14) gets middle reliever/starter Jorge Campillo (5-4, 2.76). Sheets hasn't recorded a win since the All-Star break. He's due.

Here's some good news: Jim Powell reports that Yovanni Gallardo's rehab is going very well, and a September return looks positive.

Ready for the Olympics? I don't know how it happened but I might be coming down with the Olympics bug over at the Bob Boozer Jinx. Andrew Bogut rung up Angola for 32 points and 11 rebs in a warm up tournament win yesterday. Bogut's leading his Aussie Boomers against Manu Ginobli and Argentina in Nanjing, China, this morning CST. (Bogut was played sparingly against Argentina due to a minor ankle injury and the Aussies lost 95-91.)

Aussie sports journalism is hack heaven! Here, Bogut is unabashedly lauded. Here they have Team USA roasting Turkey yesterday.

Energee! held its final tryouts last night. No final squad posting from the Bucks yet, but here's the page with all 29 of the finalists. No sign of the Bob Boozer Jinx girl, Meghan, either. Hmmm. I don't think there's any doubt that Stephanie will be back ...

June 20th Daily Drink: Bush no-no; Fielder's inside the parker; Brewers within 5 of Cubbies

Dave Bush, the model of abject mediocrity, pitching a no-no into the 8th? An inside the park job by Prince Fielder, already the heaviest hitter ever in Major League history to rumble for an inside the park homer? There was some crazy afternoon mojo working for the BrewCrew yesterday in their 8-7 win over the Jays. 8-7? What happened to the no hitter? Leave it to the Brewer bullpen.

What comes around does go around in baseball, and sometimes that axiom applies to Prince Fielder, huffing and puffing and chugging all the way 'round the bases. Last week, the Brewers slugger was robbed of a homer against the Twinkies that would have won the game -- the umps ruled that his blast to right center was under the yellow line, the Brewers stranded Fielder at third and lost the game in extra innings.

Yesterday, it was Blue Jays right fielder Alex Rios with the gripe as he flung his arms wildly in awkward imitation of a bird in flight trying to get the umpires to rule Fielder's shot to left unplayable. No groundrule double this time, and as Rios whined, Fielder kept on truckin' all the way home. The run was the difference in the 8-7 game.

Prince missed the one-year anniversary of his first inside the parker by a couple of days (he hit last year's on June 17). Fan IQ has video of both homers, along with Prince's chuggin' time 'round the bases. Yesterday, Prince beat his time from a year ago!! (16.3 seconds). Must be the veggie diet.

The Onion sports pages gave Prince a tragic end on the first inside the park job.

And yes, Prince's veggie diet continues to fascinate the geniuses at ESPN. (It's their Page 2 story).

Daily Drink May 16th

Hello sportsfans, J.D. Mo here, perpetrator of The Bob Boozer Jinx, your Bucks and NBA blog. I'm bringing you the Daily Drink today, off the bench for esteemed Sportsbubbler editor Dan Walsh, who's on a pilgramage to Fenway Park this weekend for the Red Sox-Brewers series and will be back on Monday to tell us all about it. Worry not Brewers fans, I've got you covered. Me and Mike Caldwell (and Bambi's Bombers) trounced Danny Nicolazzi's Cubs and Bruce Suter on a regular basis back in the pre-internet days of fantasy baseball.

But first, in honor of Dan's trip to Fenway, let's go back to 2004 for one way to distract a pitcher.

A strange last couple of days for our Brewers. First, there was Prince Fielder's error in the eighth on an easy grounder Wednesday night that opened the door for the Dodgers. Yesterday, Ben Sheets was cruising along for six shutout innings until the 7th, then "baffled" himself by giving up six-runs on six hits, including a lead-off homer to Andruw Jones (hitting a buck-89) and a three-run blast on a hanging breaking pitch to .... Gary Bennett??? Bennett, who caught for the Brewers in 2004, wasn't even supposed to play, but Dodger 3rd baseman Blake DeWitt was scratched with a bad back, shifting Dodger catcher Russell Martin to 3rd and requiring Bennett's services behind the plate. Before the homer off Sheets, Bennett was hitting a buck-33. This left Sheets muttering after the game about his "worst inning ever." Ryan Braun, playing his first game under his new contract, popped a solo shot in the 8th to make it 6-2 and give the fans something to cheer about, but Bennett struck again in the top of the 9th with an RBI double for the 7-2 final.

It was Sheets' (4-1) first loss of the season, coming against a pitcher, Chad Billingsley, who entered the game 2-5 with a 4.89 ERA. Billinglsey no-hit the Brewers through four innings until Sheets himself took matters into his own hands by hitting a double in the 5th. This was a pitchers' duel in which the pitcher expected to crack, didn't, and the ace, did -- a rare thing. Yost spat nails about the Brewer hitting, or lack thereof, through clenched teeth in postgame, which had to hurt. Here's the postgame audio. It's only going to get tougher this weekend against the Boston pitching staff. Now the video - hit "next" a couple of times for the Brewer hightlights:

The Braun contract had the Miller Park faithful a bit giddy this afternoon, as evidenced by the photo on the sportsbubbler home page. The eight-year, $45 million deal is a one-of-a-kind contract. It's the longest and most lucrative in Brewer history, and the biggest contract in Major League history given to a player who has played less than a full year. Yet, the price is right, writes Tom Haudricourt in Journal Sentinel. The only contract in Wisconsin sports to really compare it to would be the Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson contract, one of the last big rookie contracts before the NBA instituted its rookie scale. The Big Dog's contract, for 10 years and $68 million, was controversial when it was signed (1994) but by the fifth or sixth year, it was considered a bargain, one of the smarter All-Star contracts in the league. By those long-term standards, Braun's deal is sweet for the Brewers.

The Junkball Blues celebrates the Braun signing by comparing Braun's rookie season to 23-year-old greats in baseball history. Wow. Braun's 2007 stands up pretty well next to Joe Dimaggio and Hank Aaron's seasons at 23.

Journal Sentinel's Michael Hunt writes, What about Prince and his hardline agent, Scott Boras?

The voice of the Brewers, Jim Powell blogs about the honor of hosting Bobby "shot heard round the world" Thomson during yesterday's game, and hopes Braun's contract will help convince the Brewers' other young stars to "ink longterm deals."

In the Bucks-i-verse, the front office finally finalized the contracts of four of Coach Skiles five assistants, so the new Bucks coaching staff is all set. Officially. Finally final. It's an impressive and diverse staff, which I've been writing about on the Bob Boozer Jinx for a couple of weeks now. Today, I take a closer look at Skiles' lead assistant, Jim Boylan -- not because he looks like the evil president from "24" but because he's the embodiment of his old coach at Marquette, basketball mystic Al McGuire. Boylan was the point guard on the 1977 NCAA championship team, and always was Al's favorite point guard.

The Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Wisconsin lone Tier 1 junior hockey team, got a new GM/head coach this week and did some wheeling and dealing in Wednesday's USHL draft, trading goalie and Badger recruit Aaron Crandall to Des Moines for Wisconsin Player of the Year Jefferson Dahl from state champ Eau Claire Memorial and two great picks - #2 and #23 overall.

The new GM/coach is Jon Cooper who steps up to juniors Tier 1 from the St. Louis Bandits, a Tier 2 juniors team. Gamblers fans need not worry about the goalie slot now that Crandall's gone. With the #2 pick, Cooper got Northern Michigan backup Reid Ellingson, and Cooper has his eyes on 18-year-old Minnesota high school all-star Mike Morgan. Ellingson and Morgan stonewalled the top 'Sota players at the 2006 Mariucci Model camp at the U. of Minnesota, and prior to taking the Gamblers job, Cooper had invited Morgan to the St. Louis tryouts this summer (don't ask how I know these things).

The Gamblers took Madison Capitols forward Sean Little from Fon du Lac with its #83 pick. Defenseman David Donnellan, a teammate of Dahl's at Eau Claire Memorial and a Team Wisconsin player, went #8 overall to the Sioux Falls Stampede. I'm sure I'm missing a couple of state players, so here's the rundown from Wisconsin Sports Network.

Speaking of gamblers: Sir Charles "The Gambler" Barkley's down $400,000 to a casino on the Vegas strip, and the casino took him to court to collect. "My mistake," Charles said. Will the casino let him back in now?

And, awww, Sports by Brooks is reporting today that Tom Brady's Brazilian supermodel girlfriend, Gisele Bundchen missed the cut on the Maxim 100 "Most Beautiful" list. I'm guessing it's the paparazzi and not Maxim that's got her down.
