Adjusted Bullpen Stats in New York

The bullpen did a stellar job in NYC this weekend, first eating a bunch of innings in a precautionary weather move on Friday, supporting Sheets on Saturday, and holding up in yesterday's wicked shootout, which saw 7 runs scored by the Mets, but only 1 allowed by our pen in 5 IP of work.

The pen gets a well-deserved break today. Perhaps if the starters get their act together and start pitching deeper into games, the pen can rest some more. Only Sheets and Suppan have pitched a quality start for the Crew thus far, and Sheets is the only starter averaging more than 6.00 IP per start.

If the starters don't get their act together soon, we're going to get a repeat of the bullpen meltdown of 2007. CV, Parra, or Bush must step up and start pitching some quality IP.

Adjusted bullpen stats for the Chicago Cubs Series (#1)

Despite the marquee blown save by Gagne (who apparently could not be outdone by Kerry Wood on Monday), the bullpen pitched fairly well in the opening series. In the close games, the bullpen held 4 of 5 adjusted leads opportunities, mostly acocunted for by Mota and Torres holding down a 0-0 tie game on Monday, and Riske saving the eventual 4-3 victory. Torres also received a hold in Wednesday's ballgame, and he wins the Bullpen MVP for the series.

McClung had a decent performance in spelling Bush in today's game, but he did allow a key inherited runner to score, allowing the Cubs to pad their lead.

I will keep track, series by series, a set of adjusted stats to attempt to accurately maintain an account of how the Brewers' bullpen is doing.

1. Adjusted lead opportunity. Beyond the SVO (sv, hld, or blsv), includes tie games (tie, blown tie).

2. Shared blown save. Counted whenever a reliever records a blsv, but was preceded by another reliever that allowed runs, or another pitcher that had inherited runners score for the blown save.

3. Adjusted Reliever WHIP. Accounts for inherited runners. Adjusted WHIP = (R)/(BB+H). Adjusted Reliever WHIP =(R+IS)/(BB+H+IR)

What can a manageable workload do for a closer? Well, Borowski made it through his career all the way to 2007 before he saw more than 50 leads to convert in an entire season. His previous high was in 2006 in Florida, at 43 leads opportunities.
