let's not also forget regarding the schedule that UW has a brutal stretch with a possible 4 ranked teams in 4 weeks with Fresno ST, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State.  If Iowa rebounds (probably unlikely) this season UW could face 6 ranked opponents in 6 weeks with Iowa and Illinois after Penn State.  In recent memory, I don't recall such a tough stretch in BT play.

I am very nervous about the QB situation.  I am not very confident in Evridge right now and I have not seen any of Sherer to even pass judgement.  I really hope that Phillips is able to grab this job next season so that we can have some stability at the QB spot and not have go through another season with a brand new starter for a couple of seasons.

i have absolutely no idea how you can make a statement like this. Starting a true freshman is not ideal for any program, let alone a program that is ranked in the top 15 and has asperations for a big ten title and a possible bcs bid.  are you nuts?  We are very fortunate that we have two guys vying for the position that are 4 or 5 year guys.  that means they know the system and are more mature.  i think either one of these guys would be fine as our starting qb.  being that you have really never seen evridge or sherer play, why are you so nervous.  bielema basically said that evridge would have beaten out donovan if it hadn't been for a hamstring injury two weeks before the season started.  he obviously has some talent.  these kind of posts are the type of posts that make me never want to read this forum.  brainless.

I was not clear in my previous statement.  By next season, I meant the 2009 season.

I did see Evridge play at KState and quite honestly, he sucked.  Very inefficient and his accuracy was lacking.  Also had poor decision making which is why he never became a starter and ended up transferring.  He was not beat out as much as he did not give himself a chance to win the job.

I love how people like you like to call people names and say we are brainless.  I am supposed to be confident in Evridge when he could not beat out an average QB last year?  Donovan was average at best and was ripe to be beaten for the job.

keep in mind, we don't need a heisman trophy candidate at QB.  With the weapons we have at TE & backfield, AE doesn't need to have a 3,000yd season with 25tds.  He just needs to be efficient at running the offense and making some plays here and there.

no. that is not true. evridge transferred b/c hot shot recruit, josh freeman, was basically handed the job. evridge saw the writing on the wall and left. donovan was average at worst not best.  he has some excellent games and made some nice plays.  i would have given him a B- last year.  this with basically all new receivers and a backfield that was injured or suspended all year.  evridge will be working with an extremely deep backfield, a better line,  more season receivers, and a more seasoned a better tight end group.  if he plays as well as donovan, and fully expect him to, we will have a dynamite offense.  comparing him to his freshman year, imo, is not a good comparison b/c he has added 3 years of maturity.  he clearly has the tools to be an excellent qb in the big ten and if he doesn't, sherer has the tools as well.  i am more worried about the receiving corp taking the next step than i am at qb.

Hopefully with our rb depth, the lack of experince at wide reciever won't become an issue.  I know evridge ran some option at KSU and hopefully PC will dust off that portion of the playbook for 08.  We may see a few more elements of the spread sprinkled into the offense with the versatility of smith and brown, leaving PJ and clay to the pound the ball.

mbadger, also don't forget (I know it is easy to overlook) but UW also has to see what kind of performance we are going to get out of our specialists (punter, PK, etc).  Losing Debauche and Melhaff is going to have an impact to the team, let's just hope it is small.  I look at Jefferson to step up with some big receptions this year and don't about forget about the staff throwing Kendricks into the mix to.  The bottom line is the receivers are going to have to step up so Beckum isn't fighting double teams every play.

not forgetting at all about the impact of special teams. it is a huge concern of mine. the hidden yardage the last 3 years has been huge of us with mehlhauf's kickoffs.  his consistent field goals the last couple of years have been huge.  i have virtually no worries about the wide receivers doing enough.  beckum will and should be given the most attention.  graham should also get plenty of balls thrown his way.  with those two, and a dynamite running game, somebody like, jefferson, should be able to get deep at least a couple times a game.  it is going to be a matter of connecting on the deep ball that will be this qb's biggest issue.  i think they will also try to get gilraeth and anderson in space underneath to capitalize on their quickness.  one concern is them getting destroyed in the middle of the field.
