ESPN article on Brewers Draft
Tip of the cap to Lake for posting this in the game thread.
There was plenty of interesting stuff in here, but the key was this:
The players taken in Milwaukee's spots last year received a combined
$4.91 million in signing bonuses. The price never comes down. The
small-market Brewers likely will have to pay at least $5 million to
sign their first six picks. A year ago, Milwaukee gave out $3.77
million to the nine players it selected in the first 10 rounds.
Melvin and Zduriencik both said the club has the financial resources to sign the picks.
I had not heard anyone speak about budget, and my biggest fear was that they wouldn't have money available to pay "slot" for all of the picks. That sounds like it shouldn't be an issue.
"Melvin may have gotten this franchise out of a hole, but it is painfully clear that this clown cannot build a playoff team. How many more years are you willing to let Melvin continue to trot a team that has no plate disipline, bad basrunning, bad late inning pitching, and contiually chokes when its on the line? Melvin has no clue when it comes to hitters and it shows. Melvin must go if this team is to ever makes the playoffs again.:" -cpk1994

Re: ESPN article on Brewers Draft
A wonderful article.
Tomorrow is as important a day as this franchise has had in decades.
It is interesting how others have had this opportunity and a range of things from lack of money to rigid drafting philosophy doomed them.
I went back and Z is the best player personal director (at least based on track record) to sit on this kind of bounty.
I think he is flexible enough to make this work. I have some ideas how I hope this plays out. However, I suspect there will several surprises.

No. This is a ridiculous reach with all the picks the Brewers have. You can get Castro with a sandwich pick if you really like him that much. He makes zero sense for the Brewers with their first pick. Later on from 40 on sure. It will be one of the high ceiling teens here because there are 5 that would be taken here any year and there is such a shortage of those types of players for later in the draft.... Hicks/Hewitt/Kelly/Hood/Lawrie and then in the sandwich round it will be arms galore. Despite what is being said all 5 will be gone in round one. Z will rank them one through 5 and take the best one left on the board. I am partial to Hicks and Kelly, which is why I think both of them will be gone when the Brewers pick.

I appreciate your reply but this isn't my projection, it came from CNN, SI. Here is the link to their projection for the Brewers first pick. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/06/04/mock.draft/1.html

Re: ESPN article on Brewers Draft
I wasn't criticizing you but the article.
I really have not been impressed with Castro. I think his stock has risen because catcher is such a thin position... He is a notch below Posey and Skipworth. I know about his hitting streak
I would take Nieto later in round 2 or 3 if you want to stock a catcher..
I know I tend to have strong opinions on players but that is how I think you have to approach prospects. At that spot you take a guy who projects to be an impact player.

Re: ESPN article on Brewers Draft
So which catcher was the better pick, the one that got away (Castro), or the one they got (Lawrie)?

Lawrie is almost certainly the better hitter, but it would seem that Castro is the better bet to stay at catcher.
In the end, I will bet that Lawrie has the better career, but it's a long way to go to see for sure.
