So I've been wondering something and haven't seen it discussed anywhere really.  Was there anybody in the six picks this past draft that projected to be a fast riser?  Basically a LaPorta replacement arriving one year later?  I realize this is an imperfect analogy, that power out of the gate in pro ball is a rarity, four of the six were pitchers, and they were all drafted significantly later than LaPorta at seven.  But, a guy who has a legitimate shot at shooting through the minors and being an option for the majors in possibly 2010, or definitely 2011? 

    If Melvin (or equally possible Jack) saw one of these guys as helping the team before the current crop of Hardys, Fielders, and Harts heads for free agency, that may have played into the decision to nab CC.

I've read that Odorizzi and (Fredrickson?) could rise pretty quicked. Both are surprisingly polished. But their both pitchers so I say 2010 arrival at the earliest, more like 11 or 12.....

 A fast riser that no one is talking about is Robert Wooten in Helena.  He's pitching out of the pen, which naturally lends itself to quicker promotions.  Cody Adams could be a candidate for that too if he can get his control in line.

 Fredrickson is probably a year or two closer then Odorizzi. I wouldn't be shocked if Fredrickson isn't able to contribute next season after the break.

The problem with Frederickson is the fact that he has very little control over his fastball.  He is coming out of the collegiate ranks, which will ease the transition for sure, but he will need to consistently find the strike zone before he gets anywhere near the big leagues.

I would also keep an eye on Erik Komatsu in Helena.  The young man has a special bat and great plate discipline.  His fielding is a little suspect (big surprise), but he is a professional hitter.  His batting average is already north of .300.

Where did you hear that his defense is suspect? Im not saying you are wrong but a scout on Brewerfan.net says his defense is good and has an average arm strength. Just curious where you got that. But yes he is going to move fast imo too.

That's interesting Mass Hass says that.  I was reading scouting reports after the draft and the majority of them said he was a mediocre fielder.  That and he already has 2 errors in about 30 games in the outfield.

I am by no means saying he is a bad fielder...just mediocre with time to improve.

It is actually Colbyjack that said that but no biggie. Also I havent really read any scouting reports except that one so Ill believe you.
