as the mets have found out so well, major league relievers are going to blow leads; today's hitters are so good that long save and hold streaks are as impressive as they have ever been. so riske blowing a 3-1 lead is not major news, though he didn't look very good and i for one am not filled with confidence at the idea of sending in riske with a lead. i have read articles that quote himself as saying "i am not sure how i get major league hitters out, my stuff is so average." so does this guy have the stuff to run out there with a lead down the stretch?
but the better question, where was gagne for the 8th inning hold. i thought he was the set-up guy until further notice. he didn't pitch tuesday, the game is 3 - 1, if he isn't here (@ 10mil per) to save games then shouldn't it at least be for set-up opps like this? i am a ned supporter, so i am not grilling him for the move, but it seems strange ned didn't go to gagne. is there an explanation out there that i haven't heard yet or is that just the way ned went with it??
