Sign the youngsters to arby and then make a decision.  Offer whatever they can but do not exceed the spending limits.  I'm assuming it will be around $90-92 million for next year's team salary.

    Five million? No.

    A minor league deal, sure.

I'd do it for 5 mil. If Turnblow is kept around in the minors for 3.5 mil than 5 million is not unreasonable for a guy who is actually a class act, doesn't whine, admits when he is bad, and isn't a head case, like the aforementioned Turnblow.

Hard to understand the rationale that justifies Gagne getting 5 million because Turnbow (A MAJOR MISTAKE!) still gets 3.5 million and is in the minors. The Club is stuck with that mistake. I'm sure you recognize that making a mistake with Turnbow doesn't justify one with Gagne.

Sign him because you like how he disports himself. No whiming, admits when he's bad. The team needs performers not impeccable behavior. The latter is always desireable but should have little bearing regarding a roster spot and big bucks.

I agree with those who recognize the importance of getting some key players to replace some weak (no pun intended) ones we have. Then we can worry about sometime "stiffs" like well behaved Gagne.

They weren't "stuck" with Turnbow. THey could have cut him off any time they wanted. For some idiotc reason, Melvin still believed Turnbow could be turned around.

No.  He's not an elite reliever anymore.  I'd say about $3 - 3.5 million and I would do it.  Otherwise, we're still overpaying.

They were on the hook for that Turnbow money whether or not they kept him around.  As awful as he was at times I wouldn't detest the idea of them bringing Gagne back but not for $5 million - I imagine they could get better value elsewhere w/ that kind of money.
