Studs & Duds: Packers vs. Seahawks

Not an overly impressive win for either side of the ball, but for a team in dire need of a "W", it's big!  Here we go for the Week 6 edition.

    Studs

Jennings - big catch downfield and was open on more occasions.  Had Rogers had better vision today Jennings would've crushed fantasy football leagues.

Driver - made some tough catches and took some big hits.  Comes to play week in and week out, and hasn't had a drop that I can remember.

Crosby - kicked off deep and nailed a 50 yarder.  Been the most consistent performer on the team this year.

Kampman - 2 sacks and should've had a 3rd.  Good to see him back in the mix.

Woodson - coverage was tight all game, and took a perfect gamble and made a great pick, reading the QB's eyes all the way.  What a difference it makes when you watch the QB's eyes.

    Duds

MM - play calling was atrocious the whole game.  Last year he had no problems abandoning the run when it wasn't working, but this year seems determined to put us in 3rd and longs b/c of his need to run the ball.  Right now Grant is not hitting holes or seeing the field well, so we need to pass to set up the run like early last year.  He needs to do better to get the ball into our playmakers hands(WR's).

Picket - didn't see him make any plays all day, and saw him driven off the ball a number of times.  Our tackles have been unimpressive all year, but I expect much more from him.  He was dominated in the trenches all day.

Grant - not seeing the field well.  Not making people miss, and seems to be running at tacklers.  Averaged less then 3 yards a carry and he had some opportunities to break a couple of runs.  I dont know what his problem is, but he's not in sync right now at all.  When Brandon is back & healthy, they should share the carries on early downs.

I'm in a good mood tonight, so I'm not going to nitpick, although I'm still unimpressed with our defenses performance and the number of missed tackles and blown assignments.  On offense, A-Rod needs to be sharper and get rid of the ball quicker in general.  We need to play much better next week if we're going to beat the Colts.  We'll see what happens.

I mentioned last week that Erin has tunnel vision and poor awareness. I am correct.

In AR's defense the playcalling saddled him with 2nd and 3rd and longs all evening... not much element of surprise. Plus the Hawks were sending everyone but the water boy.

Still he made some big 3rd down conversions - none bigger than the long throw to Jennings. We scored 24 unanswered points at one point. Not too shabby.

FINALLY made a 1st down to run out the clock - encouraging. I don't think the run blocking is THAT bad. I think a lot of it's Grant - he's not seeing the cutbacks like he did last season.

Jordy is contributing faster than I thought he would - good hands and routes - and a load to bring down. Taking up Jones slack nicely.

Don't know whether Lee has disappeared or whether AR just isn't seeing him. Need to hit him more in the seams to keep the D's honest.

FINALLY got a timely 3 and out from the D and a nice drive from the O to take control of an uncomfortably close game.

Agree that we're lucky that Frye was QBing today - hard to believe that some on this board thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread when he came out in the draft.

A nice win, a MUST win... suddenly I feel like watching some more football.

Oh and Tramon deserves some props... always around the ball - has filled in very well for Harris thus far.

I hated MM's play selection today against a team even worse than GB.  After using the TEs some in last weeks game to get us back into that game in the second half with Atl., he went right back to keeping them as blockers all day.  He might as well have kept Miami from stealing Joey Haynos and cut the speedy Humphrey if he was looking for a TE blocker.  Did anyone even see Humphrey today, I didn't?

I also think we need to throw the short passes to open up the longer passes and running game, just like the first half of last season.  When everyone is worrying about where the next pass is going they get burned by the run.  This offense just doesn't work when you run up the middle for 2-3 yds or no gain twice then have to pass for the 1st down, it gets tough.  I liked the way Jordy Nelson stepped up for a few strong first down catches, before they stopped using him too.  It seems like whatever is working at moving the sticks, MM  just can't wait to try something new and weird.  Maybe he gets too hot with that green jacket zipped up around his neck, no matter what the temp?

Tramon Williams has found a home at QB and is looking real good and is getting comfortable in the position.  Al Harris might end up as the nickle back when he returns.

I enjoyed watching Brett in the early game, be Brett, win the game easily, but fumble for a TD and throw 2 picks inside the 10 yd line of the opposition.  AR had another gutsy performance and played well for being injured, but still holds on to the ball too long sometimes and pays for it, but this is his first season of play.

Agree that we're lucky that Frye was QBing today - hard to believe that some on this board thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread when he came out in the draft.

I think you've gotta put A-Rod in the "Stud" category today for once again playing through an injury that's clearly affecting his ability to do other things on the field. I think that's a major reason that MM ran Grant so much today... Rodgers arm is clearly still affecting certain throws (his first pass of the game to Driver was WAY under thrown as well as a couple other slant routes) and you can't have him throwing the ball 40+ times when he's playing with a bad wing.

Overall, a nice and much needed win in a game that the Packers couldn't afford to lose. (Especially after Captain Neck-Beard almost lead the Bears to a W that they didn't deserve in Atlanta.)

Where did we get him from? Was he a FA that TT picked up off the scrap heap?
