What the hell has happened to Wisconsin Badger football?

Barry had this program going in a wonderful direction and hired his successor from within, as opposed to interviewing candidates who could show that they could take this program to the next level.  All BB has done is drive us into the ground, showing POOR recruiting, POOR player developement, POOR sportsmanship, POOR discipline with his players, POOR gameplans, POOR preparation, EXCESSIVE throwing his players under the bus when he should be looking at himself and his mistakes.

He is CLEARLY not the man for the job and the product he has "developed" is going to require a fresh face and a new attitude to get us where Badger football needs to be.

I am embarrassed to call myself a Badger fan and I do not blame the players.  This are young kids who can excel with the proper preparation and motiviation, an area BB obviously lacks!

Bret Bielema happened, that's what. He can't recruit, can't teach discipline, and just can't coach. It's really that simple. The thing that really pisses me off is that it's never his fault. Have you EVER heard him take even a tiny bit of blame for a loss? No, it's always someone elses fault. Players, refs, band, mascot, whoever. It's NEVER on BB.

When your team goes to "bowl games" every year the fan base gets a bit too content no matter what the bowl is.  But does the team get to those bowls on their merit or because it's freezing here in the north and the "fans travel well"? Now that it looks like the team in really stinking it up and won't even make the music city bowl,  the natives are restless.

i've heard so many sound bites over the years of how "Beckum didn't line up properly" or "TD needs to read his progressions better" or "PJ needs to hit the holes better" - yada yada yada - or "the referees blew three calls" or "the time keeper was running the clock wrong".  I'm sick of it.  I've never seen a coach from a "major" program blame so many mistakes on everyone else and not even once look at himself of his staff.  Great coaches will not cite individual players or referees of conditions, rather they will look at the way THEY prepared/didn't prepare the team, how THEY had a bad gameplan or how THEY need to reevaluate their strategy.

     BB is a joke.

That is the exact reason why a number or players have quit on him. Usually I would be all over guys who do that, but BB deserves it. He never takes the blame and he has quit on his players. The man doesn't belong in NCAA football.

I was upset last year when Bret didn't give Everidge enough playing time when Donovan was playing average football. Now it seems that came back to haunt him. AE has been a huge disappointment, and there's no reason this team shouldn't be at least 2-2 in conference with the talent they have. I've officially moved on to UW basketball, and hopefully we'll see what a good coach can do with a team that's not expected to go that far. We should have enough depth to win some games, but this team is just plain awful. The boosters should be upset and after the Iowa loss, his hot seat is justified.

If Alvarez shows any more loyalty to BB, then he is tarnishing his own reputation. Alvarez will always be loved for bringing Badger football back into the limelight but even he needs to realize that it's time to turn the football team to a new direction. I agree with the previous comment that BB only holds his players accountable but not himself or his coaching staff.

The team is deficient in a lot of key spots, so it is not surprising that they are failing. Losing to OSU, Mich, Penn State really isn't that shocking even at the beginning of the season. They got whooped by an improving Iowa team this week. You have to remember that every season is a new story, and this season there weren't a lot of upgrades. BB isn't really someone who fires up confidence or even so for recruiting. Compare him to Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern (5 years younger, but the genuine alum), who is likely locked up in that job for many years coming. You have to be willing to take the chances, make the necessary changes, inspire your players and fan base.

BB is an Iowa guy. He has an Iowa tatoo on his calf even today. He sings at Cubs games. The guy has interim written all over him.

Fitzgerald is Northwestern football. Paterno is Penn State football. Even Tressel is football in the state of Ohio.

Good post Geddy.  I've always viewed BB as using the badgers as a springboard to another job.  His name always seems to come up when there is a high profile opening somewhere.  Unfortunately, Wisconsin will always be one of those stops along the way up the coaching ladder.  Lack of qualtiy in state recruits coupled with beating off OSU, Mich and ND every year doesn't make Madison look so attractive.  We were lucky to have Alvarez stick it out for his entire contract.  If the chips ever do fall, I think we need to go after an established mid tier coach like Gary Patterson, Bronco Mendenhall or Brian Kelly.

I have filthy man-lust for Brian Kelly. I don't see Mendenhall leaving BYU - IIRC he's a Mormon and to a Mormon, the BYU job is like getting tabbed to coach Bama.

Re: What the hell has happened to Wisconsin Badger football?

Brian Kelly won 2 D-2 national titles at Grand Valley State (in Grand Rapids, MI) and went 118-35-2 over 13 yrs.

He moved up to D-1 with Central Michigan and took a MAC team that had gone 12-34 over the previous 4 seasons from 4-7 to 6-5 and then to 9-4  and a bowl berth (CMU won the bowl game, so the Chips actually went 10-4 but Kelly didn't coach it)in his 3 years there.

Kelly then moved on to Cincinnati when Mark Dantonio was hired by MSU. Cinci had a solid program in place, but when Kelly arrived, first he helped the team win its bowl game at the end of the '06 season (vs Western Mich), then in '07 he took them to their first 10-win season since 1949 (10-3). He currently has them at 5-1 this season.

Aggregate record -  153-55-2. The man can coach.

What "limelight" did BB bring the Badgers back from? They always choked in the few Rose Bowl or other big games they  played in .

Whatchu talkin' about Willis?  Alvarez never lost a Rose Bowl and won many more bowl games than he lost.
