    The "Prevent" offense

Hope UW decides to scrap the "prevent" offense that was employed after attaining their 12-point lead midway throught he second half at East Lansing last Sunday.  Standing aroung the perimeter, pounding the dribble and waiting on Hughes to hoist a long air ball just as the shot clock expires didn't achieve the desired results.

I much prefer the pass/cut/screen/kick-it-in and kick-it-back-out fluid ball movement that created open looks at the hoop and helped the Badgers amass their lead against the Spartans.  This version of the Swing was much more difficult to defend than the "prevent".

Last night, after utilizing ball movement, screen, cuts, etc to battle back and attain a late lead, the Badgers once again decided to go into "Prevent" mode again (i.e. Hughes pounds the dribble to run down the clock, while teammates stand motionless watching him).  Didn't work well against Mich St and (surprise) it didn't work last night at the barn.

Not clear why Bo chooses to change out of a successful flow by implementing this "stand around and watch" offense with a lead?

I am sick and tired of this ***!! Bo Ryan needs to be accountable for his coaching late in games. This loss was completely unacceptable, and in my opinion, cost his team a trip to the NCAA's. Keep doing what got you there. If you stay aggressive, ther is more of a chance to get an easy basket or at the very least get to the line. Horrific!!

No clear why people aren't beginning to wonder if Bo has taken this program as far as he's going to and it's time to start looking for a new coach.

That possession starting at just under a minute when Hughes did nothing but dribble and then heave a three wasn't even worthy of Steve Yoder.

    Bo's gotta go.

BrewerBaby...you're going to be chanting those last three words a LONNNNNGGGG time.

He's going nowhere until he chooses to give it up.

LOL... after winning 5 straight and salvaging the season by making the tournament (so long as we best IU Sunday), now the doubters are calling for Bo's head again, haha.... comical.  If you want to criticize some of his decisions fine, but he's not going anywhere until he decides it so you might as well quit crying.

I'm not calling for his head, I just want to know why the "media" isn't asking the hard questions and even showing a little doubt in Bo. He is the one that needs to be held accountable. The players are just doing what they are taught and told to do. Very frustrating.

ITs fine to critisize some of his coaching, some of you make valid points.  But to call for his firing is just completely off base.

I did think of this during the 6 game losing streak, but never put thoughts to paper....Coach Bo should have started grooming those two freshman more and more during this regular season for next season by curbing back Jbo's playing time, Taylor got some decent PT, but Wilson should have been groomed better for next year. So will Berggren, Gavinski and Markolf be ready next year? ANy one close to the program that can clue me in their progress?? Leuer needs to put some meat on his azz this summer, then he could be force inside and out.

This thread was never intended to morph into a "Bo must go" debate.  Bo's a great coach and a good guy.

It would be appropriate, however, for he and/or a member of his staff to politely explain why (numerous times this season) they allowed a lead to diminish by employing the ridiculous "Hughes pounds the dribble at the top while the rest of players stand flat-footed off to the side with nothing to do but drum their nuts in pure boredom".

I'm no D-1 hoops coach, but I have never seen that type of offense succeed in the hands of a 6'0" ordinary D-1 guard.

Maybe others have seen this work.

It's not unlike radical Socialism/Marxism.....has never worked anywhere throughout history.....causes trickle-up misery....so let's try it here.

From talking to coaches and being at practice, I'll try to answer a few of your questions...

Wilson — Hit a wall at about the start of the Big Ten season, which is something not uncommon of first-year players. He started to struggle on the defensive end getting lost and breaking defensive rules, which is the quickest way to find a seat on next to Brett Valentyn. I wrote a story about his situation a few weeks ago, and you can find that here. The coaching staff still loves his work ethic. I'd expect Wilson to play a significant role next season.

Taylor — Ever since that Iowa shot, we've seen a different, confident Jordan Taylor. He's earned Bo's trust and for good reason. Since that game, Taylor has a 19-6 assist-to-turnover ratio. He's also been called on to take turns chasing the opposing team's top offensive player, albeit with mixed results. But, again, he is a still freshman. I would not be surprised if Taylor started next season along with Bohannon and Hughes and saw a good portion of the ball handling duties.

Berggren — Has looked good in practice. Bo mentioned in Monday's press conference that he needs to continue to improve how he moves his feet, which is a common situation big men face. Bo alluded to bigs who have improved in that area over the course of their careers to become good defenders, such as Brian Butch and Greg Stiemsma last year. Berggren will improve the front court depth next year.

Markolf and Gavinski — Both have a lot of work to do before they will be considered for the rotation. To be brutally honest, Markolf has one of the uglier jump shots I've seen from a college basketball player. I'm not sure I can even describe it. JP is more polished than Ian offensively, but needs to improve defensively. I would be surprised if either one played significant minutes next season, but if someone put a gun to my head and forced me to choose, I'd say Gavinski would be the one to play.

    Hope that helps karl.
