karl_gerbschmidt:I did think of this during the 6 game losing streak, but never put thoughts to paper....Coach Bo should have started grooming those two freshman more and more during this regular season for next season by curbing back Jbo's playing time, Taylor got some decent PT, but Wilson should have been groomed better for next year. So will Berggren, Gavinski and Markolf be ready next year? ANy one close to the program that can clue me in their progress?? Leuer needs to put some meat on his azz this summer, then he could be force inside and out.
From talking to coaches and being at practice, I'll try to answer a few of your questions...
Wilson — Hit a wall at about the start of the Big Ten season, which is something not uncommon of first-year players. He started to struggle on the defensive end getting lost and breaking defensive rules, which is the quickest way to find a seat on next to Brett Valentyn. I wrote a story about his situation a few weeks ago, and you can find that here. The coaching staff still loves his work ethic. I'd expect Wilson to play a significant role next season.
Taylor — Ever since that Iowa shot, we've seen a different, confident Jordan Taylor. He's earned Bo's trust and for good reason. Since that game, Taylor has a 19-6 assist-to-turnover ratio. He's also been called on to take turns chasing the opposing team's top offensive player, albeit with mixed results. But, again, he is a still freshman. I would not be surprised if Taylor started next season along with Bohannon and Hughes and saw a good portion of the ball handling duties.
Berggren — Has looked good in practice. Bo mentioned in Monday's press conference that he needs to continue to improve how he moves his feet, which is a common situation big men face. Bo alluded to bigs who have improved in that area over the course of their careers to become good defenders, such as Brian Butch and Greg Stiemsma last year. Berggren will improve the front court depth next year.
Markolf and Gavinski — Both have a lot of work to do before they will be considered for the rotation. To be brutally honest, Markolf has one of the uglier jump shots I've seen from a college basketball player. I'm not sure I can even describe it. JP is more polished than Ian offensively, but needs to improve defensively. I would be surprised if either one played significant minutes next season, but if someone put a gun to my head and forced me to choose, I'd say Gavinski would be the one to play.
Hope that helps karl.
