Don't be shocked if he's dealt before the end of the season! He's a sieve defensively and have heard rumblings out of spring training that the guy's kind of a knucklehead. Plus Prince is a proven major league talent and Gamel WON'T BE A MAJOR LEAGUE 3RD BASEMAN! As much as people b*tch about Prince, he not as big a question mark as Gamel. If the Brewers break out of their funk, AND THEY WILL, Gamel might be dangled to a team that's out of the race like the Blue Jays for Roy Halladay or the Padres for Jake Peavy for the stretch run.
BANK ON IT!!

Mat Gamel is on fire right now!!! I really think that he gets called up in a month or two if he can continue hitting very well. Also, everybody knows about his defensive issues, but I highly doubt that will keep him in in AAA. Sorry. What would make anybody think given Doug Melvins history with Braun etc.. that Gamle's defense will keep him in the minors even if he can swing the bat this well? Seriously.. I would pair him with Bill Hall in a righty/lefty platoon. It will add a much needed lefty bat to the line-up, and make the bench way better, and limit Gamel's as a defensive liability in the short term till he can swith positions . If he hits the ball well in Milwaukee, then either trade Corey Hart or Prince Fielder and have Gamel replace one of them. I can see this Brewers line-up, and Gamel offinsive outburst forcing Doug Melvins hand.

hbk21042000:As much as people b*tch about Prince, he not as big a question mark as Gamel. The Brewers can't afford to extend Fielder, and Milwaukee isn't in Fielders long term plans. Sorry to burst you bubble. I wish the Brewers could extend Fielder, but not logical now. Gamel has a long way till FA. He will be cheap. I'd like the Brewers to keep Prince for another year, before trading him. Gamel should replace Hart. I'd be ok with trading Hart in offseason or sooner. hbk21042000:If the Brewers break out of their funk, AND THEY WILL
I believe they will also. I just don't think that is enough of a reason to trade Gamel. Hart, Hardy, Fielder etc.. will be gone in a couple years, and the Brewers have offered them extensions and they have turned them down. That is the main reason to start brining up top prospects. I also don't think it is a good to have Gamel/Escobar/Cain/Salome? etc.. called up all in the same year (2010) is looking like the year that will happen unless a couple of them get called up in 2009. hbk21042000:Gamel might be dangled to a team that's out of the race like the Blue Jays for Roy Halladay or the Padres for Jake Peavy for the stretch run. So could Escobar, Cain, Salome, LuCroy, Green, Jeffress, Cole Gillespie, Lawrie?, Hart, Fielder etc..

Man we are absolutely on the edge right now. I cannot believe how much our pitching is stinking - and our runs scored as well! Yuk.
I say we are on the edge as we have a few high prospects, then there is a big, big black hole. We need half of these guys to work out, or we are a 60 win team for the next 3-4 years, then Yoga is gone, and back to a 60 win team we go.
Yet, it is possible we end up, even as early as next year with guys like Gamel and Cain and Jeffress and Escobar and Salome and LuCroy making our salary base dirt cheap to pick up a Halladay or 'whoever' and we are a 90 win team for 2-3 years.
How, how interesting. I really see us being a 90 win team for the next 4 years or a 60 win team. I dont see middle ground.

Apr. 14, 2009
Baseball America has posted the up-to-date draft order for the June draft, and the Brewers have five of the first 74 picks.
As we've noted before, the Brewers received the Yankees'
second-round pick instead of their first-round pick for losing
CC Sabathia because New York signed a higher-ranked free agent, Mark
Teixeira, and that pick went to the Angels instead.
The Brewers also got nothing for losing free agent Ben Sheets
because he had elbow surgery and didn't sign with another club. He'll
sign with some team after the draft, assuring that team won't forfeit
any picks to the Brewers.
Anyway, here are the Brewers' first five picks:
1st round
No. 26
Supplemental 1st round
No. 39 (for losing Sabathia to the Yankees).
No. 47 (for losing Brian Shouse to Tampa Bay).
2nd round
No. 73 (from Yankees for losing Sabathia).
No. 74
As Doug Melvin noted, it's an interesting situation when the pick
you get for losing Sabathia is only eight picks better than the one you
get for losing Shouse. And that's no disrespect to Shouse. You folks
know what we mean.

"The Brewers could always trade Hardy, Hart and Fielder and get ton in return."
That is precisely my point. If Escobar and Cain and Gamel shine, then we can indeed trade expensive guys like you mention for a ton, and we then have cheap quality and the 'ton' (whether that be pitchers or prospects or whatever) and we are a 90 win team.
If the minors guys fizzle, and we dont press home NOW with what we have, we end up having to salary dump, then we have crappy MLB team and nobody to replace them... the 60 win scenario.
Keep me up to date on the minors here. brewerfan.net has great 'link report' for minors games and chat, but I am banned from even READING it. And I dont have time to wander around the minors. So, when you guys see the minors guy fluffing or going great, please keep posting about it.

By trading either Fielder, Hardy or Hart etc.. the Brewers might actually be a better team. Depending on what they get in return. Don't under estimate Mark A wallet also. Just because Hart/Fielder and I think Hardy rejected offers made by the Brewers doesn't mean the Brewers can't make another higher offer. You just never know. The Brewers managment probably has more options then many think. I'm trying to keep an open mind. sheetsnotbroke:Keep me up to date on the minors here. brewerfan.net has great 'link report' for minors games and chat, but I am banned from even READING it. To me, the notion of bringing up Gamel to play third, even in a platoon, is ill-advised. We've been down this road with Braun and the results were a mixed bag. With the shaky nature of the pitching staff I think it does them no favors to put another defensive liability on the field. Perhaps if the plan were to deal Fielder for a pitcher and put Gamel at First I would be less skeptical. The team loses substantial power, but if Gamel is as productive in the majors as the minors, the drop off should be manageable. Prince is already a minus defender, so replacing him with another poor defender shouldn't be a further fall-off. Moreover, what they gain from dealing Fielder (assuming it is a front of the rotation pitcher) could make this an overall positive. Of course, besides power, the team would be losing some chemistry and one of its leaders -- I don't know how that will play in the clubhouse or what sort of ripple effect might be caused -- and replacing him with a young, untested player who has shown signs of immaturity. That is a concern to me, as well. I suspect Gamel will be a good major leaguer, but right now I fear that he is just the latest shiny object being observed longingly from afar by a nervous fanbase.

Classic!! Agree. Me too! If I hear one more person (not on here) complain about Weeks' defense in the same paragraph as calling for Gamel I swear to god...
