    Brewers sign Jose Pena!

    Brewers sign Dominican prospect

    July 2, 2009 6:52 p.m.

Chicago - I just spoke on the telephone with Brewers scouting director Bruce Seid, who was excited about a young outfielder named Jose Pena that he just signed out of the Dominican Republic.

Today is the day that teams can sign international players not eligible for the draft and Seid said he, Latin scouting director Fernando Arango and even GM Doug Melvin had seen Pena, 16, play.

"He's really a polished kid offensively for 16," said Seid, who was on his way back home from the Dominican. "We all liked him, and other teams were interested in him.

"He's athletic and has some power. He's got good size, 6-3, 195, and has a strong enough arm to be a corner outfielder. We really like his make-up. We're really excited to get him signed."

Wow huge sign for the Brewers.  His Bonus demands were said to be in the 1-1.5 million range.  The previous Brewers high is 710,000  This would be like adding another first round pick.

    Thanks for posting this.

In case anybody wants to know the player that got that 710,000 bonus was Rolando Pascual.

The Brewers also signed Jean Capellan, a 17-year old right-hander that reportedly hits 92 MPH on the gun.

I am very surprised that Pena only required a $400K bonus.  Some scouts had suggested he would require more than a $1MM bonus to sign with any team, and that was as early as a week ago.  Huge win for the Crew.

Finally, I've been working on trying to figure out who the Brewers have in the Dominican Summer League.  They co-run a team with the Baltimore Orioles, so it has been difficult to discern which players are affiliated with which organization.  Pena and Capellan will begin their professional careers with the DSL Brewers/O's.

If he hits 92 at age 17, then I'd be willing to bet that as he gets a little older and develops more he could throw mid 90's.  I think that's pretty common though..

Brewer prospects from the roster are Rolando Pascual, Eilezer Montano, Joan Abreu, Juan Barrini, Jaime King, Edwin Linares, Jose Ramos, Francisco Rivero, Jose Sanchez, Andres Martinez, and Luis Chirinos.

Very suprised but the $1 million figure (like I also saw) might be like the Strasburg is going to get $50 million.

I also heard that there were concerns about Pena's age (19 instead of 16)
