    Harang clears waivers

Any chance they try to get him? Weren't there rumors of a Reds trade before the deadline involving Harang? Don't know if being in the same division would block this. What would you give up? Hardy? He's a potential ace or #2 starter signed through next year.

If the Reds are willing to take 1/2 of the salaries of either Arroyo or Harang, I'd consider making a deal. Maybe a change of scenery will do good for Arroyo/Harang. Harang is a workhouse who only has 38 walk, but he is very hittable.

Can the Brewers get pre-Dusty Harang?

I would assume coming to a team with a slim chance at the playoffs this year, and very good odds next year would be a bonus for Harang. And he would benefit from moving to a larger ballpark. Look at the Free Agent list for next season, are there much better options than Harang?

I wonder what this offseason's free agent market is going to look like.

Is an Aaron Harang type pitcher going to get deals in the ballpark of 2 years, $24 mil?

If yes, the Brewers should think about claiming him on waivers.  He's the type of guy you could easily see turning it around and returning to old Harang form.

His HR rate is scary, but factor in that he pitches in the best HR ballpark in the NL and he might be a good guy to have on the staff for 2010 and 2011.

For $11 & 12 mil for 2010-11, I'm not sure of the risk/reward on that.  But if the talent evaluators can justify that he will turn it around, I can see that as being a very good deal.

Yeah it all depends on the FA market.  2 years ago that price was a steal for a guy like Harang - though he hasn't been quite as good in 2008 and 2009.

If you think you can go out and sign somebody as good or better than Harang for a better deal this offseason, then you should do that.... But if you can get Harang now -- without giving anything consequential up -- it might be a good move if similar pitchers are going to be signing 3 year, $36 million deals this offseason.

I have read that a lot of teams want to cut payroll this offseason, so I wonder if there will be some steals on the market again this year...  It's hard to say.

I say go for it. We've had good luck with pitchers weighing over 280 pounds.

Seriously, I always liked Harang and have been puzzled by his struggles the past year or two. He still seems to have a live arm and decent velocity, and new surroundings might bring him back to the way he was a couple of years ago.

The more I think about it, the more I want to snap up Harang.  I just don't see us doing better than that with this year's FA crop.

It's pretty risky, but it could pay off big time.

$23 million over 2 years for a pitcher with a downside of average mid-rotation starter and upside of lower-tier ace seems like a smart gamble...

I know he shows good stuff at times and has a live arm but lets compare

    Pticher A     ERA 4.43 BAA .292 WHIP 1.43

    Pitcher B     ERA 4.84 BAA .273 WHIP 1.36

Hint A is making 14M this year and B is making 4.75M and gets bitched about insesintly on these forums

Hard to say that A would be worth it.

But look at the Ballpark that pitcher A currently pitches in...  It's the most home run friendly park in the NL.  Strangley enough, he pitches better at home...

You're right though, it would have to be a situation where the Brewers thought they could "fix" Harang and get him back to his 2005-2007 form.
