Jeff Sagarin put together a computer model ranking the greatest college hoops programs of all time. interesting to see how close the badgers and warriors ended up. Link to full story and rankings by decade at the end of story.
1196 RANKINGS AND RECORDS
We know what you’re thinking: How in the world did UCLA not come out on top? Well, as dominant as the Bruins were
under John Wooden, they didn’t even rank as a top-40 program in the 1940s. Meanwhile, Kentucky hasn’t finished lower than 10th in any decade. We’re guessing you’re nearly as shocked by Northwestern’s No. 77 ranking—pretty remarkable
for a team that’s never made the NCAA Tournament. But with eight Big Ten programs in the Top 20, the Wildcats have
faced some of college basketball’s toughest conference slates for more than seven decades. Just goes to show how much strength of schedule matters. ABOUT THE RANKINGS: Only active Division I programs are listed in the all-time ranking.
CHESS (named for the system of rating chess players) considers only a school’s wins and losses. PREDICTOR considers
only its scoring margin. RATING is a combination of the two. YRS indicates the number of seasons in which the program
qualified for ranking, beginning in 1937-38 (the maximum number is 72). Schools that played fewer than five games
against other qualified schools during a season did not qualify for that season, nor did schools that did not field teams or
were on NCAA probation. A small penalty was assessed to a team’s rating for every season in which it failed to qualify.
The ESPN/Sagarin All-Time Rankings

If the evaluation is on the entire history of college basketball, it's probably right on. In the early 20th century, UW was probably the number one program in the nation for several years. Through the 30's and 40's they were again, highly rated and won a NC.
The resurgence of the nineties to now seals it.

You think 25 is high? That is one of our athletic program's major problems. Low expectations make average, middle of the road teams seam great.
Smoke and mirrors, people. Smoke and mirrors.

WTF are you talking about? Because I was surprised that UW ranked in the top 30 of all time basketball programs I have low expectations of the athletic program?
As usual, you make no sense whatsoever.

Don't think the Badgers should be in the top 25--if this team could finish in the middle of the Big 10, it might surprise a lot of people! The guards are experienced and are deep, but the front line line of big bodies is slow footed and don't rebound too well and don't seem to be consistant scorers under and around the basket--Bo has been successful with this boring swing offense, but I think time is passing him by--Badgers need those big offensive monsters who can jump to the rafters and stuff the ball in the bucket and these dudes don't want to play Bo's type of offense--Badgers might make the 64 team NCAA tourney again but they'll never get to the third round with the swing offense and unathletic players--wish this weren't a true!

Read the whole thread next time. The ranking is not for this season. It's a ranking of teams for all time, based on some mathematical formula.

You're having some bad luck assuming fringe posters can walk and chew gum at the same time.
First bowl payouts, then all-time basketball rankings....
